PRAIRIE is a contemporary-casual restaurant in San Francisco’s Mission District from beloved Bay Area chef, Anthony Strong. Our roots are in classic, rustic Italian fare, but we love to let loose and experiment with an expanded pantry. You’re likely to discover surprising new ingredients that aren’t traditionally found in Italian cooking but have similar flavor profiles.
We believe food doesn’t have to look beautiful to be delicious, and sometimes ours will be downright unphotogenic. We hope you dig in before reaching to take a snapshot with your phone. Sit back, eat with your hands, enjoy yourselves your friends. Our full bar offers both original cocktails and creative takes on perennial classics. Our wine list is primarily Italian with additional reserve selections found on our constantly updated Instagram @thereservelist. You can also find us @prairie. If you are wondering, the restaurant is named after the Chef/Owner’s high sc
Drinks and meal all outstanding. One miss was the dessert but that can be forgiven. Don't miss the Uni appetizer, the octopus, the cauliflower, pretty much everything!
Disappointing meal. Two of our six dishes were very good, two weren’t good, and two we didn’t even bother to finish.
Our server was kind but she was likely overloaded because there were a few hiccups. She apologized and fixed them quickly when they were brought up.
Honestly the most awful service I've had in San Francisco. I had been here before and had a great experience but this time they told me to go to another bar to wait 30 mins because they weren't ready for my reservation time; when we got the call to come back we were seated promptly but then the waitress didn't come for 15 minutes; then when we flagged down the manager the waitress never showed back up at all. Basically had to beg for our food to be delivered and flagged down multiple people for drinks. If you want bad service then go here. If not, take your business to any of the other amazing places in Mission!
The food is excellent, the service is excellent. My only gripe is how overly expensive it is. The waitress told us we should order 1-2 dishes per person, it's family style. 3 people ordered 5 mains plus 2 apps and it was too much food and the bill was $500 and we brought our own wine!! Sliced ribeye for $68! 2 small lobster tails with pasta $53! Our mistake is we weren't really looking at prices. We go out a lot in the city and are used to higher prices so we don't necessarily pay attention any more but this place is really high. I recommend the place with that caveat.
The menu is fairly limited, but every item we tried was outstanding.
However, it was all ruined by highly rushed service. A high end dinner for two with two courses should not be over in an hour. The food was brought way to quickly, with no breathing room between courses. Fine dining made to feel like fast food.
This is my local place that I love to come for dinner regularly. So far I brought every member of my family and they all loved it. Sometimes it can be noisy to have quiet dinner but the quality of the food is always excellent.
Waitress was kind, BUT insisted we place our whole order at once because it was going to get very busy (7:45 reservations). She assured us that she would take care to space out the dishes we ordered. Unfortunately she rarely came back to check on us, and most of the food (appetizers, entrees came within 20 minutes ). We barely finished our apps ! In addition several requests never arrived including an ice bucket for the white wine, two menu items and cream for our coffees). Atmosphere fun but NOISY. Would not return. Too many other options to explore!
Great addition to the neighborhood! Unique menu that’s not too fussy, no lengthy explanations of every dish. Lobster scampi is killer!
Inventive and very interesting menu. The staff was cheerful and pleasant. A great mix of people at the restaurant. A great experience.
Delicious and original
Great flavors and a nice variety of entrees.
Second time, amazing food, always satisfied.
I've been to Prairie now several times for brunch and dinner and it keeps getting better and better!
Always an excellent choice. Brought some friends here for the first time. They loved it and will be back. We ordered all the toasts, chicken thighs, savoy cabbage, butchers steak, Japanese sweet potato. All delicious. Great cocktails too. Olive wanted martini and Becky with the good hair. Good by the glass wines too
The food was delicious with intriguing spice and herb combinations. Pork ribs were perfectly cooked, spicy and juicy. The savoy cabbage had a delicious pickley sort of dressing and the combination of fresh herbs (especially the touch of mint) was terrific. We also loved the birthday cake dessert, complete with candle. you didn’t need to have a birthday to get the candle! We will be back!
First off you should know that everything here is cooked on a wood-fired grill. Secondly you should know that everything we tried was delicious! Standouts where the whole roasted head of cauliflower, the herbed grilled cabbage and the lamb blade chops. The uni butter on toast was heavenly too. Try a side of the XO sauce...fricken' flavor blast everything on the table with it. The cocktails were on point and we couldn't agree on if the yuzu lemon tart or the birthday cake was better. The table was split with one undecided. We were a party of three and with two drinks, appetizers, mains and dessert it came out to $100 a person including tip. Sometimes you walk out of restaurant in SF after spending a bill and feel violated. We walked out feeling like we made the best decision of the weekend. Thank you.
I had such a good experience eating at Prairie. A friend and I made reservations to sit outside, but after experiencing the atmosphere at the bar, we decided to eat there. I was a big fan of sitting at the bar at Hog and Rocks because the bartenders were always friendly and the food was so accessible. I felt the same way here, even though the menu is completely different. Everything is shareable and there are so many healthy options. I recommend this place for a quick bite, long dinner with a group, or for just a solo adventure when you need it.
We love this place. Great ambience and great food!
Incredible food, amazing drinks and awesome staff!
Prairie is trying some creative things and when they hit, they hit bigtime. The paparadelle tossed with creme fraiche and parm, with the chanterelle broth on the side, in a little pitcher, was out of this world. Service was very friendly and attentive. Overall, a very good experience.
Great food and love the gluten free options! One of my favorites in SF
It was amazing! The service ! The Food! Love love !!
Truly and underrated restaurant in the mission. Every time I go, the food is delicious, and moderately priced.
Excellent atmosphere and a great spot for brunch in the Mission. Anthony is a marvelous chef & owner and has created an amazing menu. Nice touch with listing items that are Keto friendly too!
Visited from London - staff were friendly and passionate about the food. The items we ordered were delicious. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a cosy, exciting restaurant.
Excellent food with a creative blend of flavors. Staff was attentive and courteous. Will definitely be back!
It took over an hour for any portion of our food to begin arriving after ordering. While we were comped something random off of the menu to hold us over while we continued to wait, which was appreciated, one of the items that we had to check the status on three times (twice with our server and once with the host) never arrived. We ended up being at the restaurant for close to 3 hours(!) which was not part of our goal. The food is good, the drinks are good, but the service was terrible and we all have a pretty high tolerance for varied levels of service.
One of the best meals I’ve had in SF in years.
Loved our brunch at Prairie! We started off by sharing the kale salad which was super well dressed and seasoned. My friend had the oven-baked eggs which she loved, while I went with the pressed omelet sandwich which was delicious!! Will definitely be coming back to Prairie, hopefully to check out their dinner too! Highly recommend!
What a neighborhood gem! I decided this spot was my new favorite place before the food even arrived. After being greeted by a authentically warm hostess, and walking to our table, the size/scale, lighting, color, and music of the dining room all felt like a perfect place to hang out and enjoy a great meal. The menu listed tempting and creative options and I decided very quickly on what to order, as I knew we'd be back to sample the rest. The await staff was friendly and helpful, and only there when we needed them. The food, as expected, was perfection. Feeling a bit reckless, we knowingly over-ordered, thinking we'd take home whatever we didn't eat, but there was little to box up in the end - it was just too good. The Mussels were especially fantastic - plump and fresh and the most deliciously seasoned broth. Everything, including desert, was unique and delicious. Thank you Prairie - can't wait to see you again!
Food was of good quality but prices were absurd -- e.g., $13 for a small breakfast waffle, add $4 for strawberries. Offensive. Service was pleasant. Interior was too loud (but probably average for SF restaurants at lunch), whereas street-side tables offered a more agreeable ambient volume. Overall I would not recommend due to stratospheric pricing / inadequate value.
Absolutely phenomenal food. Fresh, rustic, perfectly seasoned and cooked,,bid flavors, and a unique vision. This is a truly great chef. Fun vibe, cool space but friendly, good music, very sweet service . SF has changed. This independent, local, really personal, and authentic jewel is the best SF, the one with soul. And I RARELY write reviews. Am hesitant to share, but this place needs to thrive.
3rd time and it keeps getting better.
Love Prairie!! I've been a few times for dinner and it keeps getting better and better.
Friendly, non-pretentious service! Relaxed and comfortable atmosphere, delicious food with generous portions.
Every time is better and better.
The service is impeccable, some of the most friendly and thoughtful waitstaff I’ve ever experienced. The flavors are unique and bold. The grilled octopus was smoky and tender. The burrata was to die for. The cocktails are reflective of the overall experience, just delicious!
Everything was excellent. Food was interesting and inventive. Service was excellent as last visit was also.
This was our second meal at Prairie. First was dinner, with notable food all around. The food is often cooked in their wood oven--very tasty, with a strong contemporary Italian sensibility. Pasta is superb but not a main course, lots of small plates and larger entrees. We loved everything. The atmosphere is pretty loud and vibrant at night, thanks in part to a very lively bar scene. Sunday breakfast was much quieter, sunny windows open to the street. Tasty--oven-baked eggs with romano beans in a delectable Calabrian tomato sauce, and many other dishes. Interesting brunch drinks (alcoholic with cool mixers, nonalcoholic and unusual). Prairie is not cheap, but the quality of food and service is worth it. Drinks add a lot to the tab.
