A favorite of Julia Child - Pot au Feu Bistro is so much more than a restaurant... Established in 1972, our cozy Bistro is the oldest French Bistro in America. Pot au Feu Bistro kicked off the Providence Restaurant Renaissance being the first to offer something other than “steak, spaghetti and chow mien”.
Located in the Historic Downtown we are just minutes from all the hotels and convention center.

The food is fabulous. The trio of pates, the chicken liver and onions, the pot au feu all delicious. The service, however deteriorated as the meal went on. We were given desert menus but never asked if we wanted desert or coffee. Our server disappeared and we had to ask another staff member to find her so we could pay.(after a twenty minute wait). A disappointing end to a fine.meal.

Our first time at this cozy French bistro in the heart of Providence. Loved the atmosphere. We liked the food a lot and were impressed with the variety on the menu, but were surprised that our Beef Bourguignon was missing traditional vegetables (onions and mushrooms) and both that dish and the Cassoulet seemed salty, which surprised us. Having just recently hosted a 'Julia Child' dinner at our home where Beef Bourguignon was featured, we felt we had a solid comparison. The pate apps and our desserts were generous and delicious, and the cocktails very enjoyable. I'd definitely like to go back again, even if just for a cocktail and to try their French onion soup and maybe some other entrees.

All of the food was excellent. The owner stopped by the table to great our party which was a nice touch. The server was very nice although there seemed to be a bit of off timing issue with the bar order as drink service was very slow. Otherwise we had an excellent experience.

A warm, cozy environment with friendly service and very good, if not great food. The owner visited our table to make sure things are going well. We saw him also visit many others. Excellent wine list. Service was friendly and professional, but a little slow. Prices are reasonable for this type of restaurant. We will be back.

Oh we want to love it as we’ve been dining here off and on since 1976. Always nice service — owner is so lovely. Drinks, starters wonderful. Mains - hmm could use some help in the presentation space. Accompaniments are kind of heavy handed. Desserts and post drinks were excellent. Cannot beat location ambiance!

My husband and I have dined here multiple times. Everything has always been exemplary, the food, the service, the ambience. It was like spending a night in Paris. But not this time. Despite having a reservation, we were taken to a table in the corner of the bar near the restroom. When I requested a table in the main dining room, I was curtly told that nothing was available. Within 10 minutes another couple came in and after a short wait, they were escorted to the dining room. To add insult to injury, my dinner ( steak frites) was cold and had to be sent back. I have always felt like an honored guest at Pot au Feu, but this time we were treated like an imposition. As this was a birthday celebration, it was a great disappointment.

The best birthday dinner ever!!! Everything we ordered was delicious!!! The duck was fall-of-the-bone tender and mouth watering delicious. The creme brulee decadent!!! As we're the escargots, onion soup, mushroom soup, cassoulet and beef bourguinion!!! Impeccable service, and the visit and attention from the owner very appreciated! We're already thinking of our next visit!!! Thank you!!

I lived in Paris for two years and have visited France numerous times since. I've eaten at the "best" french restaurants in Boston, NYC, Philadelphia, Montreal, and Quebec City. I've never had better french food outside of France than in Pot Au Feu, and nothing better IN France! This is REAL, authentic french cooking, and from the bread through the foie gras, the main course, and dessert, it was superb. Our server, Hilary, was delightful. Bob Burke, the owner made friends out of us; the atmosphere, the wine list, the service overall - all a delight. At times, superbly subtle, at other times extravagant, every bite we took was a treat. I highly recommend and we will no doubt make a special trip to Providence again to eat there.

My friend and I were celebrating both of our birthdays with dinner before PPAC. She had been anxiously anticipating the roasted duck and as she said it was better than she imagined. I tasted a bite and it melted in your mouth. I opted for the crepes special with beef and mushrooms and it was delicious! Of course, the meal began with warm, crusty bread and salad topped with blue cheese and homemade dressings which always is something that sets the tone. We had to save room to share the creme brulee and espresso martinis for the full experience. Claire was our server, and she was a delight! Of course, Bob Burke was there to greet patrons as they entered as he always makes a patron feel like a guest in his home. For anyone who is still concerned about dining out in the midst of the pandemic, the restaurant has been reconfigured to keep patrons separated and there is a state-of-the-art air filtration system installed. The staff is masked, and the patrons wore masks when not at their table. Considering they were at full capacity; it is obvious that those who dine at the restaurant had no issue with following the guidelines. I cannot imagine anyone in Rhode Island who hasn't experienced Pot au Feu, but if you haven't, what are you waiting for!?

The menu was very limited. There was a much more extensive menu on google that had more choices and the prices were not as inflated. The server said that things tend to change. The atmosphere was nice and the personnel were very pleasant. I ordered scrod and it was very blah and it cost $28 dollars. My companion ordered the chicken livers and there were three hidden under a huge pile of onions. There was no quiche of the day and only one crepe entry. We were disappointed and probably won't return.

I ordered the original Pot eu feu that reminded me of my St Patrick’s day corned beef and cabbage I had a week ago at half the cost. It included 1/2 a head of cabbage, 3 carrot sticks, leeks, 1/2 onion, 1/2 small red potato, 3-3inch slices of beef and 1 chicken thigh in lots of broth. The other entrees were steak frites and filet mignon that was good. Drinks were good, dessert was good $15 crème brûlée nothing exceptional. Service was very slow. It took 3 hours from first service to exit. No valet, street parking only which on most nights are 2hr max. Mask mandate was still enforced.

I'm not sure if it's the pandemic or just age, but this classic Providence established did not live up to my memories during a March 2022 Saturday evening. The menu and wine list promised a lot, but the kitchen did not deliver. For the price, the dishes did not reflect the flavors, textures, and presentations to match. Example 1, the escargot were served scattered on a small dish tipping sideways and rolling around the dish rather than in the expected escargot serving dish with little niches to cradle the shells. The butter and snails lacked in flavor, no detectable garlic and not enough seasoning. Example 2, the frittes (French fries) were soggy and unsalted. Example 3, all of the main dishes, which are priced in the low $30 range, were merely adequate and uninspired creations. The Coquilles st. Jaques tried to make up in flavor with too much richness and salt. The young bartender gets a pass on the overly sweet Sazerac cocktails we ordered, given that the waitress told us that it was his first night. On the plus side, the ambiance was delightful as always, and the dishes came out at a leisurely pace that allowed for lengthy conversation over the 2.5 hour visit. The service was adequate and unobtrusive.

We had bread, appetizers, entrees, wine, dessert, and coffee. Bread was really good, fresh and served warm. Appetizers were great... excellent onion soup. Red wine was very good with our entrees... Boeuf a la Bourguignon and Filet Mignon aux Champignons, both delicious and prepared just right. The coffee was very good, not too weak, not too strong, and as for the dessert... best Creme Brûlée ever! All with excellent, friendly service... a very enjoyable French dinner!

I’ve been going to Pot eu Feau for a long time. It has always been one of my favorite places. Last night was the first exception, but it was notable. I ordered a bottled ice tea. It had no resemblance to ice tea. The Terrine was good. I had roast duck. The duck was good, however the zucchini had oregano on it and it was overpowering. The dill potatoes were burnt to charcoal crisp. We all ordered coffee. It came out a half hour after dinner. The waitress said she just made it and it was borderline cold. My son and I had crème brûlée. I’ve always boosted the theirs is the best. Even considering Paris. The brûlée was soft. The plate an the custard were very hot. I realize is was placed in an oven to brûlée it. It was the worst I ever had. I asked for a coffee refill and it took twenty minutes. I went their with my wife, son and his fiancé. My son’s fiancé had beef burgundy which was a small portion and without a vegetable The dinner took two hours and cost $400- with tip. Only three glasses of wine were purchased.

WOW!!! Best birthday dinner ever! The food, the service, and the ambiance were all of the highest level! The menu offered an embarrassment of riches—from seafood to steaks, chicken and French specialties like crepes and cassoulet. It was hard to pick just one meal each but we were all very happy with our delectable choices. The French Onion soup and escargots started our meal off right! What a talented chef! Be sure to leave room for dessert—all super yummy and homemade. The service was that perfect combination of friendly and professional. We felt very special and well cared for the entire time. The dining room is in an historic building and full of atmosphere and really good artwork! Even the bar is a beautiful sculpture. Each table offers an intimate space perfect for chatting with good friends and family. It looks like the privacy make for a very romantic date night too. I highly recommend Pot au Feu.
