A favorite of Julia Child - Pot au Feu Bistro is so much more than a restaurant... Established in 1972, our cozy Bistro is the oldest French Bistro in America. Pot au Feu Bistro kicked off the Providence Restaurant Renaissance being the first to offer something other than “steak, spaghetti and chow mien”.
Located in the Historic Downtown we are just minutes from all the hotels and convention center.

    Superb authentic bistro, wonderful onion soup, crepes, salads, wine list all at a fair price with cozy atmosphere. Only 12 tables. Once graced by Julia Child, we can see why. Loved it and will return, what we have longed for but never before found around these parts

    I haven't eaten here in years, yet the boeuf bourguignon is still the same delicious dish. I lived in France for many years and this is still the best boeuf bourguignon!

    We are not usually patrons of French restaurants because we are hearty eaters and our past experiences have been quality food but small portions. But we were vacationing in Providence and it was close to our hotel, so we thought, what the heck, we'd give it a try. We are so happy we did. Pot au Feu has proven us wrong. Quality food plus very ample portions. I love chicken livers and my portion of Foies de Valialle Lyonnaise was so large, I could not finish it at one sitting, even though I tried because it was so delicious. We also had the Pot au Feu. Again, delicious and very sizable portion. In fact, everything we saw coming out of the kitchen that passed by our table looked and smelled great. Next time we are in the area, it will be a definite stop.

    We had said it was for a special occasion but the servers did not acknowledge it! They should check what the app says about the reservation to ensure a more pleasant experience! But overall the food was fantastic

    We were lucky to get the chef’s table last night. The view of the kitchen provided an excellent show as the chef worked his magic. There was a private party in the back that slowed down the service a little but didn’t slow down the staff. You could see them all running around getting things done so the short wait for things was not disruptive to the experience. The slower pace made us relax and enjoy the food and drinks more. We got the Escargots a la Bourguignonne for an appetizer and Filet Mignon aux Champignons and Coquilles St. Jacques et Crevettes Lorraine for entrees. For dessert we decided on espresso martinis. The escargots were tender and tasty. The steak was a little smaller than expected but had a wonderful flavor and the truffle fries were delicious. The seafood was excellent in a rich cream sauce with ratatouille and dill potatoes. A wonderful dining experience enhanced by the decor and wait staff.

    Finding classic French country bistro fare is becoming more and more difficult. Pot au Fue is refreshingly authentic, well presented in a warm atmosphere. Perfect for date night.

    Had a lovely Anniversary dinner. I had the delicious bouillabaisse. My wife enjoyed the pot au feu. Ambiance is so pretty, service was excellent

    Perhaps the best Mushroom Soup ever created. And the Oysters app is something I would go back for every day if I could. We have tasted what I thought was all the ways an Oyster can be prepared - this one knocks every other one off the table. Perfectly cooked Duck. Nice server and an overall great dining experience.

    Filet de Saumon Cru is really homemade. The pickled cucumber is a great complement. Perfect thickness of salmon lightly smoked. This was a nice first course to Scrod fillet. My wife went with her go to the crepe of the day, beef and mushroom. The bottle of Beaujolais went well with both meals.

    Place was very nice, very cute restaurant. Service was awful. Probably short on staff, but we had to ask for everything all the time. They forgot the bread, never checked on us after food was served. We were constantly looking for the waitress in order to get some more drinks. I never felt so unwelcome in the restaurant. Food was ok. It was our first time, we would have appreciated a little more recommendations on the menu. I would not return. Sorry for the bad review, but we had an awful experience.

    My mom walks with a walker, not handicap accessible. Did not see anything on the website stating so. Had a lot of difficulty getting her up and down the stairs. The food was fair. The beef medallions were very good. Vegetables over cooked and the dill potatoes were way over done. Service was great. Had dehumidifiers running with cords on the floor and especially in the way trying to maneuver the walker around the tables, the partitions, cords on the floor and the dehumidifiers. Felt like the restaurant was a fire trap. Atmosphere was pleasant but the menu was over priced.

    Went to celebrate our 38th anniversary as we have done for the last 15 years at Pot au Feu. We enjoyed everything restaurant offered except for the the group next to being very loud. We will still go next year because it is a wonderful place to celebrate or have a romantic dinner

    Charming restaurant walking distance from our hotel. The staff was friendly and attentive. The drinks and food were delicious and the portions were appropriate. We were pleasantly surprised to see the tables sectioned off with partitions but with Covid on the rise we felt safer. We had a perfect evening celebrating our graduate.

    The food is glorious — we've eaten pot au feu at a restaurant in Paris, and theirs here is even better. And the personalized interaction of the owner takes the service off the charts. We'd gone here for our first date seven years ago, and when we came back again on our anniversary, he was still going around checking in on everyone. Highly personalized service. Highly recommended restaurant.

    The food is fabulous. The trio of pates, the chicken liver and onions, the pot au feu all delicious. The service, however deteriorated as the meal went on. We were given desert menus but never asked if we wanted desert or coffee. Our server disappeared and we had to ask another staff member to find her so we could pay.(after a twenty minute wait). A disappointing end to a fine.meal.

    Our first time at this cozy French bistro in the heart of Providence. Loved the atmosphere. We liked the food a lot and were impressed with the variety on the menu, but were surprised that our Beef Bourguignon was missing traditional vegetables (onions and mushrooms) and both that dish and the Cassoulet seemed salty, which surprised us. Having just recently hosted a 'Julia Child' dinner at our home where Beef Bourguignon was featured, we felt we had a solid comparison. The pate apps and our desserts were generous and delicious, and the cocktails very enjoyable. I'd definitely like to go back again, even if just for a cocktail and to try their French onion soup and maybe some other entrees.

    All of the food was excellent. The owner stopped by the table to great our party which was a nice touch. The server was very nice although there seemed to be a bit of off timing issue with the bar order as drink service was very slow. Otherwise we had an excellent experience.

    A warm, cozy environment with friendly service and very good, if not great food. The owner visited our table to make sure things are going well. We saw him also visit many others. Excellent wine list. Service was friendly and professional, but a little slow. Prices are reasonable for this type of restaurant. We will be back.

    Oh we want to love it as we’ve been dining here off and on since 1976. Always nice service — owner is so lovely. Drinks, starters wonderful. Mains - hmm could use some help in the presentation space. Accompaniments are kind of heavy handed. Desserts and post drinks were excellent. Cannot beat location ambiance!

    My husband and I have dined here multiple times. Everything has always been exemplary, the food, the service, the ambience. It was like spending a night in Paris. But not this time. Despite having a reservation, we were taken to a table in the corner of the bar near the restroom. When I requested a table in the main dining room, I was curtly told that nothing was available. Within 10 minutes another couple came in and after a short wait, they were escorted to the dining room. To add insult to injury, my dinner ( steak frites) was cold and had to be sent back. I have always felt like an honored guest at Pot au Feu, but this time we were treated like an imposition. As this was a birthday celebration, it was a great disappointment.

    The best birthday dinner ever!!! Everything we ordered was delicious!!! The duck was fall-of-the-bone tender and mouth watering delicious. The creme brulee decadent!!! As we're the escargots, onion soup, mushroom soup, cassoulet and beef bourguinion!!! Impeccable service, and the visit and attention from the owner very appreciated! We're already thinking of our next visit!!! Thank you!!

    I lived in Paris for two years and have visited France numerous times since. I've eaten at the "best" french restaurants in Boston, NYC, Philadelphia, Montreal, and Quebec City. I've never had better french food outside of France than in Pot Au Feu, and nothing better IN France! This is REAL, authentic french cooking, and from the bread through the foie gras, the main course, and dessert, it was superb. Our server, Hilary, was delightful. Bob Burke, the owner made friends out of us; the atmosphere, the wine list, the service overall - all a delight. At times, superbly subtle, at other times extravagant, every bite we took was a treat. I highly recommend and we will no doubt make a special trip to Providence again to eat there.
