   We stopped here for dinner on the way to Guerneville and ended up quite disappointed in the food. The service was attentive and kind, but the actual meal was lacking in most ways. The meatball "entree" came with 3 meatballs about the size of lacrosse balls which felt small given the price, but they were also too tightly packed, a bit dry and the red sauce had some unknown spice note (like curry or coriander or something) that didn't belong in an Italian red sauce. The Mushroom Provolone pizza and the bolognese both had almost no seasoning at all. The Mushroom Saffron Risotto was made well, the house made tagliatelle was fresh and delicious, and the pizza crust was very good as was the olive loaf they served with our food. It could be that we just like more seasoning (basil, oregano, garlic, etc.) and the cuisine of this restaurant is not that style of cooking but we left underwhelmed.

   We had a date night with our 4 yr old daughter and 9wk old puppy. Paolo and Kat are always quick to greet and check on all guests. This little mom and pop shop serves up the best fresh pasta and Familia style of hospitality makes dining at Portico is a transformative experience that make you feel like you just took a teleporter to Tuscany. We got a few apps, some favorites the bolognese, prosciutto with cream and peas, & tortellini. So yummy don’t miss out and you can’t forget the bubbles.

   My whole family loves Portico! The food is consistently delicious, especially the delicate pasta and delicious gelato. We never feel rushed, always warmly welcomed…it’s like having a little piece of the best of Italy in our California town.

   Friendly atmosphere, joyful staff. The food presentation is beautiful and the dishes comprised of fresh ingredients, house-made pastas, all delicious. It feels like I am being served food from my Italian friends home kitchen, everything imbued with conscious care, with love. Oh, and there is gelato, bliss.

    My food was delicious however my husbands steak not so great and the meatballs had a strange flavor. Or saying it’s bad just wasn’t for us. The waitress was nice but the service could have been better. She was carrying on a conversation with another table and we did a lot of sitting and waiting when we needed service. If I ever go back I would definitely want a table in the front as it seemed that was where her attention was focused. I definitely would drop in for a gelato. The salted caramel was delicious.

    This is a small venue and from the outside looks more like a small bakery or coffee shop. table cloths would give the place some warmth and coziness. The glass of Italian red wine was delicious. We shared a beet salad that was sad and uninteresting and the lettuce was the standard mix out of a bag ☹️. My friend and I thought the beets were canned and had no flavor. The bowl of homemade gnocchi was excellent. Fresh pillows of gnocchi sautéed in butter and sage. Garnish with a little extra fresh sage next time please. I would go back but hopefully more fresh vegetable and salad items will be offered.

    awesome little Italian spot with lots of fresh ingredients and tasty fresh pasta. Very small location and I wouldn't consider going in without a reservation. Owner is fantastic and checks on you and your meal.

    We have eaten here twice before and it was excellent food and excellent service. This time however they appeared to be short staffed. Our initial waitress was lovely very attentive. But then I think we were handed over to someone else. It took a really long time for our salads to come. In the meantime we asked for some bread. The second waitress brought it to us and just walked away. We had to flag her down and we asked her “ does olive oil come with the bread?“ Because we had seen them serving bread with olive oil. Her response was “well, it could.“ So we said OK we would love some olive oil please lol! Then just as we received our salads I noticed that our dinner had come out from the kitchen and was sitting on the counter (our table was directly next to where the dishes come out). I told my husband that our food was up and wondered if we should just tell them to bring it to us now so that it wouldn’t be cold. However the dishes then were taken back into the kitchen and I figured they would bring them to us when we finished our salads. Which they did. The food was cold. My husband had the lasagna and I had the cannelloni. Because it was cold, it was heavy and very unpleasant to eat. We were so hungry however that we ate most of the lasagna and I ate less than half of the cannelloni. I don’t know if we will go back, I would like to but they’ve been in business for a couple of years now and it seems like they could have it together a little bit better by now. We had two glasses of excellent wine, thank goodness, and our bill was over $100. That was a little bit painful for the low quality of the experience.

    We split 2 entrees, Eggplant Parmigiana and Saffron Mushroom Risotto. Each was prepared to be highly flavorful with excellent texture. Each bite created delicious sensations in the mouth. We also split a Rocket Salad which had a superb lemon dressing. We finished with their freshly made cannolis! The filling was light and not overly sweet. A perfect dinner!!!

    Wow! What a great experience here the other night. We were seated outside on their cute patio with a small water feature. We were greeted by a friendly server and as we sat down we could see a gentleman inside making fresh pasta. The inside looked quaint and cozy. We had a wonderful artichoke dip and salad for starters and then had the best lasagna I have had in years. The sheets were very thin and delicate and the flavors were outstanding. My wife. had the chicken piccata and raved about it, and especially loved the sauce. We had a wonderful bottle of Nebbiolo from the Langhe area for only 30! It was delicious and one of the owners came by twice to check in on us and share a bit about her story and how they source their wines. We then went on to have the tiramisu which was tasty, light, and big enough to share. The dessert we will go back for though was the cardamon gelato! What a wonderful flavor combination. We cannot wait to go back for their fresh pasta, great service, and remarkable gelato. We also caught a show after at Main Stage West which is right next door.

    “We don’t know Italian wines.Could you please describe these wines & compare them to our California wines?” The answer from our first server,”We wrote a description on the menu,”I said, “I can read, but I would like to have you tell me a little more. We have guests from Nebraska visiting who like a Chardonnay wine. Which one is closest to a Chardonnay?” This server went inside to get the owner who approached our table & told me the same thing, “The menu has the wine descriptions.” I,again, said “I can read but I need more guidance.” Eventually, we were told one of the white bottles of wine on the menu was the one she recommended - interesting it was the most expensive bottle of wine. We saw the menu listed wines by the glass and by the bottle. We asked for a taste & then were told they don’t give tastes. We eventually ordered a bottle of wine; within a minute the owner came back with a different bottle &offered this one to us, again even more expensive than the others-learned this on check.We were told she had 4 bottles remaining of this wine & she had removed the bottle from the menu.Started to order our meal at our 5:30 Saturday evening; 3 of us wanted canneloni -nope, only have 2….really? This is Saturday night and one of your best pasta dishes…only 2 remaining for the evening? Ordered gnocchi with sage butter sauce instead.The gnocchi was outstanding w/fluffy gnocchi in bowl with brown butter sage sauce. One of the guests is from an Italian family and an Italian restaurant background; she ordered one of the two cannelloni mains. Good, but not as fresh and fluffy as we have enjoyed previously. The plate seemed microwaved; the béchamel seemed old and not light &fresh. Salad of Rocket and lemon vinaigrette was refreshing. Beet and goat cheese salad also fresh and delicious. Salmon pappardelle was missing some salmon. Love the pasta here but always have issue with the service.wrote an article while in culinary school-food or service..which is more important?
    

    Portico Italian Social FoodResponded on September 22, 2022I admit, Italians (and New Yorkers) are notorious for speaking frankly. I love it. You don't. Regarding our wines, we sell them by the bottle at retail price. It's in the style of casual dining in Italy. The wines I suggested are a mere $25 -29/ bottle here, 30% less than restaurant pricing. As I said at the time, we don't offer tastings because we don't have/keep a lot of bottles open. We educate our customers on the menu with excellent tasting notes and even pairing suggestions.

    A fabulous small restaurant with exceptional food and dedicated owners, who are there working and talking to the patrons. The wine selection is very affordable and there is always something that complements the dinner. The arugula salad is our regular as we explore different main courses. Pasta is made there and sauced elegantly. And finish with walnut biscotti!

    Beet salad excellent. Gnocchi, gummy, very little sage, butter sauce. Tortelloni very good. Had to ask for bread after receiving entree, never did get olive oil. When through with meal, server asked anything else, when we said we were good, instead of bringing check, server went and chatted with cooks. After 10 minutes we had to get up and ask for check. Poor service considering we were the only diners inside the dining room. This was our 3rd time, 1st excellent,2nd good and 3rd not worth returning.

    A lovely little bistro serving excellent Italian food. In so many places a risotto or eggplant parmesan are precooked and then warmed in a microwave. Here the food is prepared from scratch. So, it does mean a bit of a wait for your meal. However, the excellent salad makes the time pass quickly. We made the mistake of not allowing enough time for our meal when we were attending a concert.

    Portico had been recommended to us. We enjoyed the food, but our overall experience was mixed. We dined outdoors, and the wind blew a curtain over a table, knocking glasses onto the concrete. We weren't injured, but it could have been worse. We brought a bottle of wine with us, and the owner asked if we could open our own bottle, although they charge a corkage fee. We didn't succeed in getting the cork out and had a mess. We were very appreciative of the young man who served us and did most of the table set up, etc.
