Bruno and Denise were excellent hosts. One of the best filet mignons I've ever had. Serving was short on vegetables.
I had to arrange a dinner with VIP from Japan on Saturday and he did not prefer San Francisco downtown. SO, I made a reservation through Open Table at 6:30 pm on the day. He also wanted to do shopping near the place. So, I took him to Draegers which is 5 minute-walk from this restaurant. It is very convenience for shopping just before having a dinner.
He was very happy about the foods, atmosphere and place. I would recommend my colleague for the similar cases.
Porterhouse is one of the quietest restaurants I have encountered. The Owner and staff were very amiable and provided great service. You have to at least try their meats and unique vegetables once to determine if it is your style. The quality of meat is superb but the preparation, cooking at 1800 deg, leaves a burnt taste to the meats exterior as the fat drips or sears off. We all have our own taste but I prefer the steak at 500 - 600 deg from my Weber.
I would definitely go back. Great food and service.
Love this place. The food is always great. Our waiter Gio was terrific.
Steak and lamb are really soft and tasty! Friendly server and excellent services! Love the chocolate mouse cake ! Definitely revisit! Five stars.
We always love Porterhouse restaurant in San Mateo. They really have some fine food. The crab cakes were delicious, but I think they need to serve an even number for a table of two. Three means you will fight for the third. They should have given us four. And they were small, but oh, so delicious. The Foi gras was excellent, but again a small portion. And who doesn't love a great foi gras. The beet salad was very nice, too. But my steak, the 15 oz dry aged ribeye was just deliciou. What more could you want from a steakhouse?
It was our first time here, but definitely returning. Everything was great! Food, service, ambiance, oh and ice cream out of this world!!
My favourite. The cowboy is the best.
Always excellent steaks! Very good and friendly service.
In the mood for the great dry aged beef. 20oz T-Bone & Bone In NY steak cooked exactly the way we like. Asked owner for a good recommendation of wine to pair, he suggested a 2007 Cynthus Cabernet, which complemented the meal perfectly. I really like the extensive wine list at Porterhouse, many with decent age.
The steaks were good but the service staff kept forgetting us. The waiter was surprised that after a long cocktail “hour” we had not been served yet. Vegetables were dry. Wine list by the glass was limited. The acoustics in the “green house”, due to all the glass, means you can hear all the conversations at adjacent tables but not always understand the person opposite you. Some soft surfaces would help. I would recommend asking for the main dining room. Deserts were not remarkable.
Another wonderful dining experience. This time had the TBone & 3rd Ave NY steak and paired a bottle of 2012 Chateau Napa Martin Estate Cabernet. This wine did not have much aroma and did not connect. It was very high in alcohol percent 15%.
Celebrating my wife’s new job! This was probably the best experience we’ve had in a long time! Cheers to our server!!
I'm certain I had the best steak I've ever had. We shared the Porterhouse for two and it was amazing. The veggies and starters we ordered were also wonderful.
This place is great for a special occasion. Located in a very unassuming location in downtown San Mateo. There is a huge sign on the front of the building, but the restaurant is in a building with other businesses and getting to it isn't completely obvious. The best way I can describe it, is to wander to the back of the building on the street level.
Definitely worth the trip and $. I still remember that steak.
Porterhouse didn't honor my reservation and closed the kitchen one hour early at 9:00 pm, despite having listed hours until 10:00 pm.
Went to Porterhouse for a New Years' Eve dinner, and was impressed by the food and the service. We even were serenaded by a talented and humorous violinist. It is on the pricey side (though, compared to SF restaurants of similar quality, it's mid-priced). The bottom line: We have added this spot to our 'special night out' rotation of restaurants!
I won't be back
The steaks are the best, service always great. The filet is one of the best, and always cooked to requested level. We had all filets, from everything from rare to well done, and we were all pleased. I do have to say the vegetables served were disappointing, they usually have a baked potato, but we were all served a small portion of mashed and a stem of a cauliflower . This was for New Years so hopefully they will go back to a baked potato on a non holiday.
The food and service is exceptional. Definitely a neighborhood gem!
My 12 yrs old daughter wanted to go to a steak house for NYE. A friend recommend the Porterhouse. Made reservations. She loved it. She ate the whole steak. And dessert.
Second visit to Porterhouse. Came here to celebrate a
Birthday. We had a reservation for 7PM, arrived around 6:20 and were immediately seated.
The restaurant was pleasantly quiet with just a soft ambiance level of music and other people talking.
We both ordered steak which was beautifully prepared and the meat fell right off the bone of my 20oz Porterhouse, I was in absolute heaven! He equally enjoyed the Cowboy Steak. We were both a bit disappointed over the “Grilled Prawn” starter for $19.00, as it was basically a shrimp cocktail. The shrimp arrived cold and was plated with what ultimately tasted like standard shrimp cocktail sauce. I would recommend that the “Grilled Prawns” be Prawns and come out warm, to justify a $19 starter.
The evening ended pleasantly with our server bringing out a nice birthday gesture of ice cream and candle to help us celebrate. I was very appreciative of that.
Aside from the starter, this meal & experience was very nice and I do see myself visiting Porterhouse again.
I went there for a Christmas dinner with my daughter who was back from college. This is an excellent steakhouse with great dry-aged steaks and a fabulous wine list. We had filet mignon and a bone-in New York steak, as well as crab cakes. Each of the dishes was delicious, and the service was impeccable. We would definitely consider going back for a special occasion.
Real treat after successful surgery recovery. My sense of smell is back! Prawn Cocktails NY & Cowboy Steaks. Owner paired a bottle of 2012 Dry Creek Vineyard Meritage, excellent accompaniment. Merry Christmas.
It was our first time to Porterhouse on Christmas Day. We had reservations and we were seated right away. Our server was very attentive. The food was excellent and we can't wait to return.
Terrific prime rib. Split prime rib and perfect portion for 2. Love the brussel sprout, squash and pomegranate salad.
We were seated promptly and service was prompt and courteous, especially considering they were working on a holiday. My husband got his soup hot and before the meal something we have had problems with in other restaurants. Food was good, my prime rib perfect, and attractively presented. All and all a good experience at a place new to us and one we will probably repeat.
Food was bland, over cooked and small portions for the price. Good presentation and great service. The best thing on our table was the bread. Pork chops were very dry. Mac and cheese was salty and noodles under cooked. Mary’s Chicken and butter nut squash Risotto were bland. One out of two mojito’s (2 of the same flavor, for the same person), tasted different and took a long time to get. Waiter was cool and made us another (he said it was due to bar tender shift change). Overall, the bread and the waiter were the best part of the Christmas dinner. First and last time there.
It was Christmas Eve dinner, service was initially slow - from getting seated until they got our order. We felt like they forgot all about us. Service improved after appetizers. I hope this is just a fluke. I’ve been here a few times and service was always stellar. Food was great as always.
Not only me, my friends were very satisfied with the steak.
Especially, COWBOY steak is very good to me.
Was a really nice Christmas Eve dinner. Food was awesome and had a great time with family
Prime rib is a large cut. Very flavorful and juicy. $38
Third ave cut is also a really good piece of steak. $41
This restaurant has the best steaks in the area. The booths provided privacy and an intimacy rarely found in restaurants. The service here is provided by a knowledgeable professional staff. If you want great beef this is a good bet. They also have an excellent bar and an excellent wine list.
Love this place. Always fulfill my steak cravings.
Food and service was excellent! Reservation was made very easy for a party of 9. We were quickly seated upon arrival. Definitely coming back with the team. Thanks Porterhouse!
Porterhouse is one of our go-to places. The food is good and, frankly, consistent. We went on a Wednesday night and it was busy! This may have been a factor in the less than perfect service. The bartender was our waiter (!). We ordered the Porterhouse for two, and usually the dish is served with a "presentation," but, nope, not this time. Just plopped down by the chef. None of the normal fanfare. We will continue to patronize Porterhouse because of the great food and awsome bread pudding. Note to the wondeful Mr. Ugur, your placemats are showing wear and snagging our sleeves! Time to replace them.
always a good stop for special occasion. Service is good and the food is excellent. hors d'oeuvres and desserts are very small for the price they charge, forget about sharing on those items. Other than that, it is good.
Place is not really nice. Food is good but not amazing, specially for the price you pay. Can’t really recommend it.
Just did not feel like Turkey this Thanksgiving, even though Porterhouse offered the Traditional fixings. We were in a dry aged beef space and ordered 3rd Ave Club NY Steak and a Cowboy Steak. Prawn Starters with Martini’s. Paired bottle of 2009 Cinnabar Cabernet Alexander Valley with the entree. Restaurant was packed, and service was understandably impacted. The owner’s family all pitched in to handle the crowd.
Maybe it's just me. On a special occasion I tend to expect a special dining experience. Maybe I should just give that up because it seems special occasions (holidays) are exactly when the most experienced restaurant staff gets the evening off. The result is not bad. Just not special.
