Porter House Bar and Grill Ratings and Reviews
Ordered porterhouse for 2, perfect medium rare. Others ordered filet & skirt steaks, also perfectly cooked. Extensive wine list, had wines by the glass & a bottle of Barbera di Asti...all excellent. Service was impeccable & wine sommelier was very helpful in choosing our selections. Our table by the window afforded us a view of the snowfall. A very memorable dinner.
I love this restaurant. The food is excellent. The wine list extensive. The wine staff is very knowledgeable and helpful. The menu has many excellent choices and you don't have to be a beef eater to have a wonderful dining experience. We did have a problem with our waiter. He was very pushy and tried to rush us. I explained that we were not pre theater or pre opera we just wanted to enjoy the night and celebrate our friends birthday. He grunted at us and just stood there saying he was ready to take our order. He told my friend and I that our entrees would take extra time and we said the would be fine and not long after they put our food down and he it was good it came quickly. He keep pushing appetizers on us when we said we were so good with extra sides but he kept asking. I have no idea what his problem was. We've never had this issue here before. We all felt we were being rushed so the tables could be turned around - not a good look for a restaurant at this level. We'll come back but some other clients might not.
I had marked in the notes when making the reservation that this was for a birthday, a special occasion. I didn't go into the meal expecting anything but thought that the least they could do would be to say "Happy Birthday." They didn't do anything. On top of that the food was very mediocre for the prices they charge. The $60 filet was nothing special. The $18 salad had more dressing than salad. The best part of the meal were the carrots and potatoes. Not a good sign. I would not recommend this place to anyone I know as there are much better steakhouses in the city for the same price or even a little cheaper.
If you are paying a high price for a steak you would think it would be a better cut than sizzler. Other upscale steak houses in the area are far superior and give a better cut of meat. It was like a mad rush asking me if I wanted a drink before I even sat down in my chair. Expected better.
We fond it unique to have a restaurant in NYC to have such an expansive view outside and being on the 4th floor was even better to have a different perspective. While we didn't get a table right along the windows we were close enough to have a decent view outside. The menu offered good variety for what's considered to be a steakhouse and the steak definitely did not disappoint. The truffle mashed potatoes were phenomenal and would definitely be recommended.
After I was unable to get a reservation at Keens, at the recommendation of a colleague at work, I made a reservation at PH to celebrate my Fiance's birthday. I'd hoped for a table by the window, but instead we were seated at a table for two which was very close to other tables for two. However, we were pleasantly surprised that close proximity was not too distracting. The service and food were amazing, dessert was mouthwatering! We will return! Thanks for a great evening. Maybe we can get the window seat next time! ; - )
Though the place was lovely, and the food was amazing our service, or lack there of, truly ruined our experience. Our waiter was inattentive, rude and our food took forever to come out. We waited for an hour after we order to get our entrees. When we arrived at 5:50 we stated we had theatre tickets for 8, we ordered as soon as we were given the option. However we almost didn’t make our show.
When we wanted to order food, get more drinks, needed more water, wanted the bill, he was no where to be found. When he was near our table he was far more interested in other tables and even our efforts to catch his eye or attention failed. It was truly disappointing as we were excited for the evening out and getting to try Porter House. The food was amazing, but the poor service really made this a one time dining for us.
The poor service and low service made the night turn into a stressful one as we had to run 5 blocks to catch the show in the end.
First overnight to manhattan - last minute reservations were okay and we were seated early - bar was crowded but people were very nice to talk to- drinks were very good - dinner service was excellent in every respect - wine list was full but not encyclopedic- food was served on time and perfect - waiter made great menu suggestions and he was right - desserts were top shelf
Restaurants build their expectations when main course (just the steak) cost from 60 to 70 USD. With the sauce and the size a price at approx 85 to 100 USD.
To be honest, it was good. Some of the sides was not more than intermediate. Spinach had too much taste of megnut, onionrings tasteless. Sauce bernaise, well its not made the way you could expect for the price.
I'd easily do these things better.
Noiselevel is at a level that don't let you have a romantic night out. You just need to keep yelling with the flow.
This restaurant has delicious food. It was perfect for the extra special milestone birthday we were celebrating. My son and husband had the porterhouse for two and the steak was melt in your mouth tender and perfectly seasoned. My salmon over fresh tender perfectly seasoned greens was acceptional. Loved the wine selections. At the end, the New York cheesecake for dessert with its surrounding fresh fruit was outstanding.
I always have a great meal here. I guess gusts why I keep returning. The staff is so friendly and helpful. And the good is always superior. I started with the special butternut squash with hunger & yogurt soup. Delicious. And it hit the spot after walking 8 blocks in the cold wind. The filet with maitre d butter was cooked perfectly, and full of flavor. Of course it cut like butter. The onion rings were crispy. And the sautéed mushrooms were perfection when mixed with the steak. All of this was paired nicely with a glass of Margaux. All in all an excellent meal.
