No happy birthday. Felt rush. Attitudes was horrible. I feel like my money was more important
We love to dine at Porter House every time we are in New York which is often. The atmosphere is vibrant and festive, the quality of the food is consistently delicious and the service has always been excellent... until our visit earlier this week. We were entertaining friends from California and happy the maître d accommodated our request for a window booth, so all started well. Until we tried to order an appetizer while enjoying cocktails, conversation and deciding on dinner selection. Our waitress was adamant we could NOT order an appetizer before our entrée and insisted we place our entire order at once. I had not eaten all day and did not want to eat bread to satisfy my hunger... we practically begged however she would not budge and said she would lose her job if she put an order in for an appetizer before the entrees.
VERY disappointed our simple request could not be accommodated and that the Chef's desire took precedence over a paying customer. We dine at the finest restaurants in the country and have never had this happen.
To add insult to injury, our waitress informed us her shift was over and another waiter would finish up with us. After the check was presented and credit card charged, the waiter returned and stated he did not charge the correct amount... really? Again, never had this happen before! We again presented our card to charge correctly. He reappeared and said "never mind" … we were a bit confused. We have now been charged twice! ... first the incorrect amount, second the correct amount. Now we need to take the time to call to make certain a credit is pending.... Not horrible, however seeing that they would not accommodate our request for an appetizer this has become a very disappointing experience.
We have a reservation for 12/18 for our annual Christmas trip to the city with family.... will give it another try and hope this was an isolated experience.
Had an excellent dinner to celebrate my 65th prior to seeing a show. The entire waitstaff was very friendly, helpful and efficient. Neither my wife nor I eat steaks, so we ordered the risotto (excellent), scallops (superb) and salmon (very good), so I was impressed they did seafood as well as they do given the rest of the menu. Add in the view and proximity to Broadway, and we’ll be back.
steak was great, service was great at the table - hostess was not nice and had an eh attitude. very noisy cant have a quiet conversation we had to shout at each other. so
Perfect venue for a business dinner.
Eli was outstanding. He made our evening perfect!!
Great food in a charming atmosphere. An amazing dinner, definitely valuable!
Porter House is our go to restaurant for date night, business dinners or any special occasion. The service is unlike any other restaurant in NYC. Everyone from the wait staff, to managers to table service staff are kind, thoughtful and attentive. This is by far the best Caesar salad in NY and the steaks and lobster are always cooked to perfection. The noise level is great for conversation but not so quiet you can’t have fun. The sommelier Joel always makes fantastic recommendations within any budget. And we are always seated as soon as we arrive. This is the place where you want to be a regular. Thank you so much, Porter House, for helping us make so many special memories!
Porter House is our favorite Thanksgiving venue in NYC. This is our 10th or 11th year at PH. It is a Thanksgiving tradition. The food is delicious and the service impeccable. See you in 2020!
Steaks are great.
The turkey on Thanksgiving Day was dry.
Wonderful way to spend Thanksgiving. We go
There often and always the best experience.
We booked the restaurant months in advance for Thanksgiving dinner. The traditional meal of turkey and stuffing was dry and inedible. The bill came and we were charged for six adults $110 per person when in fact we had 3 adults and 3 children that were supposed to have been $55 per person. We brought it to the attention of the manager and he corrected the bill and acted like he took care of the situation. He never addressed the fact that we didn’t eat our dinner because of the poor quality. The waiters were very inattentive and it was clear that they could care less about our satisfaction. They were probably thinking we were holiday diners and that they’d never see us again. They are right.
We always enjoy Porter House, and we especially enjoyed it this Thanksgiving!
Great thanksgiving dinner
Went fir Thanksgiving. Turkey was diner meat. Not good at all. Pity cause service was fantastic but the 7 of us came for the food.
For a restaurant at this price level, service shouldn't be questionable. Food was great, ambience was good, but service was poor. Everything was great until after we had our main entrees. We finished our dinner and waited another 45+ minutes before our server stopped by again. I'm not even exaggerating because I clocked it. The assistant/busser checked on us sometime in the middle of that wait and asked if I wanted another drink. I said yes, but that drink was left forgotten to sit on the well until just before we got the check. When the server finally managed to get out of the weeds, he asked if we wanted to see the dessert menu. Not automatically dismissing the restaurant for the oversight (and trying to sympathize since I too worked in a restaurant during college), we said we'd like to see the menu. Another 10+ minutes later, the server stopped if we knew what we wanted. Well, we knew we didnt want to wait any longer and just wanted the check, paid for it, and had dessert somewhere else.
When I thought about it and put myself in the server's shoes, he was pretty busy and probably didnt want to give mediocre service to all his tables. So, he picked one table to give up one....that was my table. Pretty crappy experience considering it was a special occasion dinner for us.
Anniversary Lunch, fabulous as always!
Very expensive for average food. The quality of the meat wasn’t great and the lobster was tasteless. Small things missed, like spoons for the sauces that are served with the oysters and having to carry our coats through the restaurant to our table and then sit with them ?!
A great place and top steaks and very Nice at lunch too. Will be back and defintely reccomend
It was great!
Great place if you want to taste NYC and its finest.
Overall good. Pass on the Brussel Sprouts. Carrots are great.
It was my second time here. I was so impressed with everything on my 1st visit that I couldn't wait to take my wife. What a disappointment this time. First we were seated at a crammed table for 2, right next to another couple, with my wife placed behind a column so that she couldn't see anything. The noise level here made it impossible for us to talk, literally. When I noticed that many other tables for 2 were empty, I asked very politely if we could be moved. The young woman at the front was visibly annoyed - until her boss told her to move us. We were then taken to a side room with faded carpet, fold-away tables (I think), and others who were either with children and infants they couldn't or wouldn't control, or obvious tourists dressed down to T-shirts (seriously) with huge shopping bags stacked up next to them. The food was OK (but not as good as first time) and the service was exemplary. But the overall ambience of the restaurant was shocking and frankly embarrassing. (I was most certainly the only person in this side room that wore a jacket and tie and my wife was extremely overdressed. We even half-joked that they put us here because we reserved through OpenTable, not personally. Unless things are rectified, this restaurant is about to go downhill very quickly. If I go again it will be by myself because it's too risky to go with anyone else you wish to impress.
Great food and great service. First time visiting this restaurant, and it did not disappoint!
I always go back t PorterHouse because of the food but I feel that the ones who seat the customers look at the skin color and ethnicity of people and seat them at the worst part of the restaurant. I could attest to this since I've been going to PorterHouse for a while now. Also the desert menu is getting very stale. It needs new selections.
Simply the best steak in New York City.
I had the rib eye sandwich for the second time. The first was great. The beef was thinly sliced with most fat held out. No the same this week. Very disappointed but I will try again. Felt like different hands at work. Little fat is always preferable and very thin slicing allows one to eat without pieces falling out. This was my fourth visit..
Very well prepared and flavored ribeye. Server was pleasant, helpful and professional. Good.business lunch
The staff taking care of at the table was wonderful. Our server managed the whole process, the sommelier treated us great and the folks serving and clearing were nice and engaging. The team at the front of the house greeted us warmly and helped as our group arrived. Food is at the top of NY Steak House scene.
I was surprised that the manager made such a scene out of sitting us by a window. I had highlighted in reservation that it was my son’s birthday and the place was not full - it was a Sunday night. Those little things matter, and I encourage the managers to be a little less rigid
We loved Porter House and Grill.
Everything was great from the hostess to the end of dinner
Overall good experience for a Saturday night...
Steaks and sides were all well-cooked except for watery creamed spinach Wait staff was limited and had to be called to table several times for water, bread., share utensils for sides and ..coffee service. It seemed food was dropped not served...
Nice room but felt like more catering house than fine steakhouse.
Delicious, friendly staff, very attentive, food was over the top, Go here if you want to indulge !
I made a reservation two weeks prior to get my preferred table and one of the reasons I booked this place is because of the view. I arrived a few minutes earlier my reservation time and made us wait a little until my reservation time. In my reservation, I requested for a booth by the window but I was assisted to a table way different from what I requested. I returned to the reception to let them know that I didn't like the table and that I made a reservation and requested for a table by the window. I was told that all the tables by the window were not available and it is a first come first serve basis and those tables were for 4-5 people but some tables had only 2 guests and even though the guests in one of the tables by the window just left, I wasn't seated there. They told me they could give me a seat close to the window if I would wait for 15-20 minutes but 30 minutes had passed and nothing so I approached them if there were tables ready and that's the only time they seated us. I don't get the point of making a reservation to get your preferred table, I even made the reservation 2 weeks before the intended date and would be informed that the tables you want are first come first serve. That's totally nonsense. Not even an apology was given to us. This ruined my night.
Porter House Grill was very busy on a Thursday evening so the noise level in the restaurant and bar was very high - typical for New York. We chose the NY strip steak with a truffle mashed potato and spinach sides. The steaks were great and perfectly cooked and highly recommended. The sides were small in comparison (particularly the mashed potato) and if sharing you need 2 portions. Our waiter was friendly and helpful. All in all a good end to our New York trip.
