Great customer service and food will definitely be coming back
It was just ok. My short ribs weren't anything to brag about. I've had much better in Louisville. I dont think we will be back
Excellent dinner. The grilled meatloaf was so good. Love this spot on the sunny side at the foot of the big four bridge in Indiana.
My food (the scallops) were so salty I could Barely eat them and the accompanying greens. It was clear that my plate was MOSTLY full when the waitress (very nice young Lady) took it away. I didn't complain - because I was on a FIRST date and didn't want to make a bad impression. I AM a foodie. Too, too, many roasted red peppers and the greens - as I said, were so salty I really almost spit them out on the first bite. I was sorely disappointed and embarrassed that my date paid over $90 for a dinner a could not eat. Just saying. Janet duPont (502)377-9783
Great food, good portions, excellent service. Nice little spot on the river.
Service was great, food was great, outside seating was great.
I came late about 930 and was immediately advised the kitchen was closing at 10, however, there was reservation options at 945 or 10 on open table. Not a big deal though. Ordered the grilled meatloaf and shrimp and polenta. Overall everything was good, however, the meatloaf dinner was really salty borderline too salty and the same thing for the shrimp and poltena. I would try it again it had nice patio seating.
We do love Portage House. Suggestion. With such a great river view from 2nd floor I would move the indoor outdoor wreathes to the window panes above the one where they now hang. That would greatly enhance ability to view river.
Quite possibly the best dining experience of my life. The food was unreal. The short ribs and hot sauce marinated fried chicken were to die for. The truffle fries were a great start to the meal. The server was the most food knowledgeable person I have ever spoken with. His explanation of the menu and the different flavor combinations was incredible. I cannot wait to get back there and try the rest of the menu.
Beautiful view on the river. They offered a special for 2 diners and it was good. Bread pudding was just ok (a little dry). Our waiter was very attentive & easy on the eyes 😜 Would definately visit again!
Delicious food with a beautiful view. Very relaxing. We will definitely be back.
Our delicious meal started with a warm greeting from the staff. Kate was an excellent host for our entire meal. The restaurant is a repurposed old house, but is very warm and inviting. The tables are not crowded together, so there’s plenty of privacy. Low music plays in the background. The river views are great, whether dining indoors or out. Our evening started with the Baked Goat Cheese Dip & Toasted Pita ($14), which was enough for four. It was absolutely delicious. The Tomato Jam was exceptional. We also had the Roasted Brussels Sprouts ($10). They, too, were delicious. Our entrees were the Griddled Meatloaf ($23) and the Duck Breast ($28 ). Both were succulent and hearty with delicious sides. We finished our meal with the Nutella Mascarpone Mousse ($9). There’s definitely a return visit in the near future. Just a wonderful place.
We dined in for Mother’s Day brunch and it was great! Katie was our server and did an amazing job (we had a large group and she was extremely patient with us). The food and great, especially for a buffet!
The service was really wonderful! I loved the space. The food was good, but a bit on the pricier side. Would definitely go back again!
Somewhat pricey for lunch.
3 of us were the only people there from 11:15 until we left at 12:30.
One person in our party is handicapped and labored to climb the stairs in the front. We were informed inside that another entrance was available in the back with a wheelchair ramp. NO SiGN but good to know.
Great setting - historical home overlooking Ohio River and Louisville skyline. Warm friendly and attentive service. Everyone enjoyed their meals. Polenta could’ve used a bit more flavor and duck was very slightly undercooked in center. Would return.
Our party of 8 were happy with all the dishes we tried but none of us were blown away. Service was great but the atmosphere may not have been as lively as we had hoped. That being said it would be worth another try.
Pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food and service here. Would certainly come back. Options were minimal, but the quality was great.
If you like loud places for dinner, this is the place for you. It was over the top loud. A table of 4 could barely hold a conversation it was so loud. As for the food, it was just ok. I had the barbecue sandwich and it was not any better than you could get at a fast food place. My wife had the meatloaf which she said was very good.
It gets loud when the people around you are loud. This is inevitable at any busy restaurant. If people around you are loud and you are uncomfortable, let them know they are ruining your dinner or ask the server for a different table. We would have and could have accommodated.
The food was really good, but the dinner was not filling and it was expensive. My husband said....that didn’t fill me up at all and we had dropped $50. The service was very good and the view of the river was very nice.
Maybe we just aren't the place for a "fill up". We have very high quality food and drink at really great prices. At $50 ($25 a person), it is amazing for the quality and level of service along with the atmosphere/view.
Great food and service, but they are pretty pricey.
Friends in from Denver. The waiter was wonderful and knowledgeable about bourbons and wines. Food was great too!
One of the best river views! Though the divine goat cheese app is my usual go-to, tried the five hush puppies—awesome! I’m also a big fan of the duck breast, but opted for shrimp and grits this time. Biggest shrimp ever and the cheesy polenta grits are perfect. We dine here as frequently as we can—never disappoints!
Perfect place to have a dinner date. I enjoyed the flavorful cocktails and delighful entrees.
Excellent service, food, and ambience. Can’t wait to come back again!!
Delicious food with a great view of the river!
Always amazing. Great ambience and food. Can't wait to go back
The view of the river was very nice and our food was great: We got the fried chicken. However, our service was only okay. We were told we could only order drinks that were on the menu and a margarita was not on the menu, so no margaritas for us and the drink menu was limited. When we ordered coffee and bread pudding for dessert, we had three rounds of coffee before our dessert came out. The coffee was good but the bread pudding was not worth the wait. I will go again in the summer and give it a second try and see if the service has changed and maybe they expanded their drink menu.
Good service but limited lunch menu. Meal was attractively presented and tasty.
We really enjoyed the place. Our food was great. They were out of a wine my sister ordered, but that happens sometimes. Our waitress, Kate, I think, was so sweet and really attentive. We were in a room with another couple of tables. One party had 10 or 12, and they were super noisy, so we had trouble hearing each other, but that certainly isn’t the restaurant’s fault. Overall, great visit. Glad we tried it.
We had smash burgers - very good. Some entrees seemed a bit pricey.
The menu is much better than the previous ownership. We were very impressed. We will return!
We can’t wait to have better weather and dine outside
Fantastic food, ambiance, and people. We had the Duck and Shrimp and Grits.
Both were great. We couldn't stop eating the appetizer fries. The river view is awesome.
Excellent restaurant. Perfectly cooked foods. Service slightly slow but charming.
Not a huge fan of converting homes to restaurants but will not let that stop me from getting another one of those burgers!!
This was our second dinner at Portage House and will go back again. We highly recommend the brussel sprouts! Two of us had the fish special-salmon, another had meatloaf and then the fourth person had the black bean cakes. All was delicious! If you sit by a window, be aware that it is a very old home and it is drafty. May want to dress accordingly.
Great dinner and atmosphere.
We had a group of 9 ladies, everyone's food was excellent except one where the fried chicken was overcooked. Otherwise food, drinks and service was excellent. It was difficult parking and I think they could make it easier to get from the parking lot to the front door.
Great atmosphere and great service. The goat cheese appetizer was our favorite thing we ordered. The food was good but didn't wow me like some other places. Portion sizes generous. An overall good experience and we plan to go back.
Might be nicer in the summer when you can sit outside and just have an appetizer. I expected something a little more elegant, so perhaps my expectations weren’t correct.
I think the food is better at fat lamb. I had the scallops with root vegetables and thought the veggies were undercooked.
