Great food and service, but they are pretty pricey.
Friends in from Denver. The waiter was wonderful and knowledgeable about bourbons and wines. Food was great too!
One of the best river views! Though the divine goat cheese app is my usual go-to, tried the five hush puppies—awesome! I’m also a big fan of the duck breast, but opted for shrimp and grits this time. Biggest shrimp ever and the cheesy polenta grits are perfect. We dine here as frequently as we can—never disappoints!
Perfect place to have a dinner date. I enjoyed the flavorful cocktails and delighful entrees.
Excellent service, food, and ambience. Can’t wait to come back again!!
Delicious food with a great view of the river!
Always amazing. Great ambience and food. Can't wait to go back
The view of the river was very nice and our food was great: We got the fried chicken. However, our service was only okay. We were told we could only order drinks that were on the menu and a margarita was not on the menu, so no margaritas for us and the drink menu was limited. When we ordered coffee and bread pudding for dessert, we had three rounds of coffee before our dessert came out. The coffee was good but the bread pudding was not worth the wait. I will go again in the summer and give it a second try and see if the service has changed and maybe they expanded their drink menu.
Good service but limited lunch menu. Meal was attractively presented and tasty.
We really enjoyed the place. Our food was great. They were out of a wine my sister ordered, but that happens sometimes. Our waitress, Kate, I think, was so sweet and really attentive. We were in a room with another couple of tables. One party had 10 or 12, and they were super noisy, so we had trouble hearing each other, but that certainly isn’t the restaurant’s fault. Overall, great visit. Glad we tried it.
We had smash burgers - very good. Some entrees seemed a bit pricey.
The menu is much better than the previous ownership. We were very impressed. We will return!
We can’t wait to have better weather and dine outside
Fantastic food, ambiance, and people. We had the Duck and Shrimp and Grits.
Both were great. We couldn't stop eating the appetizer fries. The river view is awesome.
Excellent restaurant. Perfectly cooked foods. Service slightly slow but charming.
Not a huge fan of converting homes to restaurants but will not let that stop me from getting another one of those burgers!!
This was our second dinner at Portage House and will go back again. We highly recommend the brussel sprouts! Two of us had the fish special-salmon, another had meatloaf and then the fourth person had the black bean cakes. All was delicious! If you sit by a window, be aware that it is a very old home and it is drafty. May want to dress accordingly.
Great dinner and atmosphere.
We had a group of 9 ladies, everyone's food was excellent except one where the fried chicken was overcooked. Otherwise food, drinks and service was excellent. It was difficult parking and I think they could make it easier to get from the parking lot to the front door.
Great atmosphere and great service. The goat cheese appetizer was our favorite thing we ordered. The food was good but didn't wow me like some other places. Portion sizes generous. An overall good experience and we plan to go back.
Might be nicer in the summer when you can sit outside and just have an appetizer. I expected something a little more elegant, so perhaps my expectations weren’t correct.
I think the food is better at fat lamb. I had the scallops with root vegetables and thought the veggies were undercooked.
The ambiance is unique, but the drinks and food were significantly overpriced. I had the meatloaf, which was more of a really overcooked, dry hamburger it definitely would have broken a window). My fiance had the barbecue sandwich and enjoyed hers. We are glad we went once, but won’t return. $10 glasses of house wine and $8 drafts are well above the market price in the area.
Hi Frqnttrvlr, I sincerely hope that you brought up your meatloaf issue to your server. We are a small independent restaurant that is just trying our best to give guests the best experience possible. We would've gladly made you another. Wine, beer, and liquor prices are completely in line with our overhead costs. I won't bore you with costs of doing business but we do charge accordingly for the quality of goods we sell. Thanks for your feedback.
Amazing place to eat and take a loved one! I took my wife there for Valentine’s Day and it was the best decision yet. She not only loved every bit of it but we are planing on going back for our anniversary!
Kate was an amazing server! Made great suggestions and was very prompt in her service.
The house cocktails and duck were fantastic. The view of the river was beautiful.
Dinner was absolutely delicious. Portage House remains high on my list of top eats. Inventive and very high quality food coupled with a great atmosphere makes for a wonderful experience. We will be back.
Excellent choice for Valentine's dinner! My husband & I had the Duck & Flat Iron steak entreés....very tasty!
The place was very elegant and the service was absolutely perfect. Did I mention the food was excellent.
Thanks so much,
John M. Finnegan III
The food is amazing as well as the view. Service was outstanding. We can’t wait to go back in the Spring/Summer and enjoy their awesome patio.
Great location, food & service... what can I say it was awesome.
It was a friendly environment and the food was wonderful.
Fire! This place is phenomenal. Went there for my Birthday dinner with the fam. Everything was delicious. They have excellent drink selections. The food was great from start to finish. Great place for a nicer meal or celebration
We had a nice time with a rather large group of friends. I’m sure we were a little louder than I would like if I was dining at the restaurant. My food was good. Some of the entrees were lost and came out late. Most people didn’t mind. The broccoli appetizer was too salty to enjoy. Some of the classic items were on point. Overall pleased.
Wonderful! We did go on a weeknight, and they were not very busy, so it was very quiet and intimate, and we had great service. It was perfect for a date!
We had a great bartender who served our food and drinks. Very nice laid back place with a nice classy feel. We had a couple drinks, split a couple starters and split an entree and still dropped a Benjamin. So value wise I wouldn’t call it a steal, but no regrets and would go back.
Really liked the atmosphere. What a beautiful view. The food was good. Most of us got the salmon. My husband thought it was a little dry but mine was okay. Think the presentation could have been better. Dark vegetables on a dark plate.
When we asked for sweet tea they gave us unsweetened with sugar packets. That’s a huge no. Everything else was great! The waiter came by a little too frequently.
Wow. Just wow. 3 stars for not serving sweet tea in a restaurant in Indiana...never in my life. I mean this isn't the deep south or anything. We also don't serve Mountain Dew in case you were wondering.
Cute little house with a great view of Louisville from across the river! Wait staff was very friendly and attentive, but service was very slow. She apologized several times for the delay in getting our meals, but we watched others who were seated after us receive their appetizers and meals before us. One couple who sat down some 45 minutes after us were paying their bill at the same time we were. Food was great and I would return to give it another try if the occasion arose.
Great food and service and a spectacular view of Louisville!
A favorite. Everything is unique and delicious. Service is casual yet helpful and friendly. Atmosphere is quaint, romantic and the establishment is beautifully decorated!
