Portabella Cream of Mushroom Soup

Monterey Bay Sand Dabs
lemon caper sauce, seasonal vegetables, Yukon mashed potatoes
The lamb shank and wild mushroom risotto were outstanding. The corn and crab soup was a great starter. Service was good as the restaurant was totally booked.
Design and feel are great! location is wonderful.
We ordered drinks for 7 and one didn't arrive until we asked again.
Food arrived 40 minutes after ordering... and everyone added more salt. Also the dishes were pretty small, they were definitely not generous.
Wine was served in heavy chunky glasses, when thin light glasses were hanging above the bar in front of us.
Everything was great. The service was attentive. The food was excellent. We are regulars.
It is advertised as an Italian restaurant but it really isn’t that. There are only a couple of dishes that seem to go that direction. The rest of it is sort of ordinary California faire. We were hoping for a more ethnic experience than what we got was pretty blasé. Nice stuff and overall pretty OK. Nothing to write home about.
We both had the mushroom soup and short ribs for dinner. The soup and ribs were very good. Our mashed potatoes were cold and the sautéed carrots almost raw. Wish I could give 3.5 for food. That’s also why we gave a 2 for value.
The ambience is quite nice, and we liked the guitarist. We also appreciated that we were not rushed. We enjoyed leisurely finishing our bottle of wine after dinner. We would recommend Porta Bella to friends.
Compared to past visits it was a let down, especially for our anniversary which was noted on our reservation but not acknowledged during our visit.
The corn in the chowder was chewy.
We had to ask for a second set of cutlery 3 times.
The molten chocolate dessert was as cold as the ice cream it was served with.
Overall, a very sad experience when we chose them over all the others in Carmel after traveling from the Sacramento area.
Great food, service and location!
Sand dabs, salmon, pastas and seafood linguine were delicious!
I would hands down go back to this restaurant. Our waiter was very friendly and it was fast and enjoyable service. Not to mention the food was delicious.
Great food and atmosphere. Service was excellent.
What a beautiful setting. I have been here before and would definitely come back again. Loved it.
Lamb shanks a hit. Sand dabs excellent. Octopus and risotto better elsewhere. Hummus great as starter
Every time we visit Carmel we have dinner here. They never disappoint. Always great service, great food, and great wine!
My wife loved the octopus appetizer.
Portabella has always been one of our favorite restaurants in Carmel. Excellent menu and quality. Location is great. Outdoor dining is very pleasant and fun.
We always stop at Portabella when we are in town and have watched it evolve from a quaint and unique dining experience into a busy and delicious restaurant. Although some of the charm has faded, the food is just as remembered. It’s great to see one of our favorites succeed but selfishly wanted more attention. Thank you for a wonderful evening. We enjoyed every bite!
Wonderful appetizers and entrees. Waiters were very attentive and Maitre’D went table to table to make sure all was great!
Great place in Carmel-By-The-Sea. Owner is personable and makes you feel welcome. The food and service are always great.
Hate to say it but food was some of the worst ever. I had a fresh green salad with baby beets and blue cheese. The salad was wet and slimy with vinaigrette and the blue cheese was one big gooey clump instead of the usual crumbles. My husband had sea scallops and after eating one he was hesitant to continue, taste was just off.
It is a cute restaurant, service was fine, but food was major disappointment, for the cost of the meal.
was disappointed by this restaurant, I had the sand dabs which were overcooked and not seasoned properly. My bigger concern was the lack of covid social distancing, we chose a table away from the crowded area but later another couple were seated right next to us, chairs less than 6 inches from us. The male proceeded to cough and sneeze at other guests and seem to find this amusing. I mentioned this to the staff but I guess revenue was more important. Also the after getting the check and paying I had to ask for my credit card be returned, seeemed to go missing without explanation.
Wonderful experience in a quaint Italian restaurant. Special unexpected touches make you feel appreciated. The food is excellent and well portioned. My risotto was the best I’ve ever had and my wife’s pappardelle bolognese was just what you would expect from a pasta homemade and prepared the Italian way! Magnifico!!
PortaBella is my absolute favorite restaurant in Carmel-by-the-sea! The food is amazing and the service was great. Will return next time we are in town!
This place was packed inside and outside. Food and service was excellent. Adorable place…very romantic.
Excellent food, service and atmosphere. We had a wonderful time.
Delicious food and great service
We made reservations and were seated quickly. Tasty meals!
Excellent place. Wonderful ambiance. Good food, but very rich. This was not a light meal.
My wife brought me here for the first time. It was excellent as described from the grilled prawn appetizer right down to the Pecan Cobbler ala Mode!
I HIGHLY recommend this place when on the Monterey Penninsula.
Very good service, food exceptional, the only complaint is that 3 of the outdoor heaters where we were seated were broken, hence rather chilly.
I’d mentioned it was my husbands b’day but nothing extra special offered.
Excellent food; well-prepared and nicely presented. The service was prompt and attentive. We'll certain come back again the next time we visit Carmel.
Delicious food and drinks, cozy and cute location!
Did not have menu item. We were first ones there for lunch and they still did
not have menu item. Server was matter of fact and didn't not care. Took
forever for him to come back and ask if I had a second choice.
Food and service was superb. A well run restaurant where they pay attention to the details.
For the restaurant that is currently listed #3 in Carmel on Tripadvisor, we definitely expected better.
Service was bad food was bad!
Late lunch on a Saturday; 1:30 reservation. Sat outside at a two-top next to the front door, patio seating options were somewhat limited because it was pretty full. Only real issue is that it wasn’t completely level so there was some annoying table/chair wobble. It is what it is.
Ordered two of their house Manhattans, came out quick, very big and boozy. Thumbs way up. However, water and bread still hadn’t arrived, and I was parched. Had to ask again, finally showed up. Bread and herbed dip/spread was pretty tasty.
We both had a cup of the corn and crab bisque, came out piping hot and was absolutely delicious. We both also ordered the Croque Monsieur. Pretty good but the ham was like pretty average quality lunchmeat ham. I guess I expected a more premium ingredient but it wasn’t to be.
Service was very good, except for some initial slowness but it was quite busy.
Four stars across the board.
Super good really recommend
We love PortaBella and come here almost every time we visit Carmel. Unfortunately yesterday was not as great as before. We ordered cocktails after we sat down. When our appetizers came, we reminded the waiter our cocktails were not here. We finished our appetizers… asked the waiter a second time re our drinks, then the cocktails arrived. I noticed other tables who came after us already got their drinks. Maybe the bartender forgot the first time, but to have to ask the waiter a second time is not right. Our waiter was not wearing his mask… we now know vaccinated people can also spread the virus.
It seems overhyped or they were having a bad day. The service was good as they accommodated most of our requests. However I see that their furniture is dated (torn seats), food is average and so are we really paying a carmel tax.
Excellent, as always. The food and service are consistently great. Love coming here when we are in Carmel.
My absolute favorite restaurant in Carmel! A delightful place to have lunch.
