We were pleasantly surprised upon entering the restaurant. To us, from the outside it isn't very inviting however once we entered the restaurant was alive with customers. This is a very upscale restaurant for a beach town (which usually means shorts and flip-flops are allowed) so I would advise wearing something a bit nicer than usual. My husband and I are foodies that just moved from Washington DC where we had any/every cuisine at our fingertips. By that, I mean if it wasn't the best dining experience it wasn't going to last long. You can imagine we were surprised to find Port Land in Wilmington. I am a native of Wilmington (however I've been away for over 25 years) and I can tell you this kind of a restaurant did not exist back in the 80s.
We started with the pate and some oysters on the half shell. The presentation on the pate was lovely and tasted fresh and delicious! The oysters were small but tasty and shucked to perfection. For dinner my husband had the scallops with risotto which he raved about and I had the ribeye steak with peppercorn and wine sauce which was ok. The steak was cooked medium even though I ordered it medium rare. What is it with restaurants and medium rare? It came with a side of mushroom which were delicious. Side note, the table bread with the pimento cheese butter is DELICIOUS! Again, highly recommend. Next time I will get a salad or seafood. Nice to have another option in Wilmington. As for cost we thought it was right on the money with two cocktails, our two dishes and two appetizers for $130 however you may think that is high. Finally, our waiter was fantastic, best service we have had in town for over 9 months and that's worth the cost of dinner!
We had a delicious meal here to celebrate my husband's birthday. Highly recommend this restaurant for any occasion. They have a great bar set up too
Had an excellent meal with friends. Most felt the food was exceptional except for the one ribeye steak which was a bit too fatty. Interesting menu format with a selection of sides but substitution is allowed. Would return when I save enough money as it is a bit pricey. Staff was friendly and attentive.
Girl friends outing to celebrate one friend's birthday. Out waitress, Emily is fantastic. With vegan in the group and this is grill restaurant, She is up for the challenge and explains questions after questions. She even made the desert so special just for our friends birthday.
I have the crab with blue crab meat, English pea,... It looks so good and taste wonderful. I finished in a blink of eye. The only imperfection is the bottom crab is soak in the sauce and is longer crispy, but taste great and I finished all. Over all, fantastic experience.
We started our weekend beach getaway with dinner at this popular locally owned venue. The rambling square footage is divided into smaller dining areas giving the cozy feel of a much more intimate space.
The service was expert, not intrusive, yet attentive. The menu selections were reliably described. The Caesar salad was something special. The entire head of romaine was lightly grilled for a pleasant hint of smokiness. It was then appointed with a few olives, roasted tomatoes, plus or minus mildly flavored white anchovies, and topped with richly aged shaved Asiago. My husband and I agreed that the house-crafted dressing was one of the best we’ve tasted and that the portion could easily have been shared.
The patrons were lively the night we visited as garden clubs taking part in Wilmington’s annual Azalea Festival celebrated. We were told other times are a bit less raucous. The occasion made for a lighthearted beginning to our vacation.
We took a chance based on the recommendation of a friend who lives in town. Wow! We really lucked out! From the moment we were greeted at the door by our hostess, to our short time at the bar and our follow up meal, everything was perfect. The menu was very complete and servings were beyond hearty.
I will definitely be back and, until I get here, I will recommend this place to anyone who asks.
Interesting menu, great service, good food. Be aware it is very pricey but one of the best upscale places in the ares.
Best steak I’ve ever had. Service was excellent, as usual. Highly recommend and will definitely return.
Had a fabulous experience! Every detail from cocktails & appetizers to chocolate cheesecake were delicious and served with a smile!
Fantastic food, great wine selection, but a little cramped and loud.
It’s time eating here but it definitely won’t be our last. Excellent food Abdul service.
Great place for dinner with friends. Can’t wait to try the rest of the menu.
Restaurant showed they accepted reservations until 9.45pm
Port Land Grille is one of our favorite dining establishments. The food is always excellent with a great variety of selections. We do not attend very often, because the price is beyond our normal budget for dinner. When we are able, it is a wonderful place to celebrate a special occasion. We loved that the dessert was served on a plate with Happy Anniversary drawn on the rim of the cake. -- a very nice touch. The serving person also put fun, colorful sprinkles on our table as we were seated, just to make it more festive. Thank you.
Outstanding meal and service! As always— incredibly consistent, loved new menu.
First time there. Will not be the last ,Great place all the way around. One of the best steaks i have ever eaten ,thumbs up to chef and his staff
We make it to Port Land Grille once or twice a year and are never disappointed in our meal or experience. We just wanted to treat ourselves to a fine meal and we got just that. We started with wine, mine red Pino Noirand the wife had a nice white Chard. I ordered a Lamb chop with mashed potatoes and asparagus, my wife ordered a Pork chop with bone in served with a vegetable mixed with shaved ham mixture and both were wonderful. We shall return soon.
Always a great place
My wife and I had dinner last night. As warned by the waiter, appetizers are huge. My crab cake was nicely spiced and served on a nice bed of beans, but there was too much breading in the crab cake, and too little lump crab meat. We both had fish main courses. Both were fine, but not exceptional, somewhat disappointing for the price paid. We finished with a shared piece of coconut cake. It was huge, and even sharing it we were unable to finish all of it. The cake was tasty, with a strong coconut flavor, but it was too heavy and dry to be really good.
A very favorite special occasion or special treat restaurant. Unfailingly excellent with service to match.
Excellent as always! My husband and I love this place!!!
Always enjoy the food at Portland. Our server was excellent and the food yummy!
First time visitor. Service was very good, waiter answered all questions about menu. Food came out quickly, cooked as ordered and had great taste.
Busy nite but table was ready at reservation time. Special request made via Open Table was met. Friendly & timely service and waitress’s wine and food suggestions were very good. Quail appetizer was excellent as was the sea bass.
Great waitress - very attentive but not overbearing. Food was good but pricey. My wife said her dish was best shes had in Wilmington area. We will go back.
We were pleased that it continues to be a restaurant for special occasions; the food and service was great.
I ordered a stake and it was not cooked to my request, it was to salty, and it was tough. I will not return to this restaurant, nor will I recommend it to anyone I know.
A wonderful meal w/ friends. Every dish was exquisite. Can’t recommend the antelope enough — tender, delicious, flavorful w/o gaminess. The branzino was superb — flaky, light, moist, sublime. Tuna was similarly exquisite. Red neck egg rolls always a favorite. The sauce for the shrimp cocktail has just the right punch and true depth of flavor. Found the coconut cake a little dense but use chocolate cheesecake perfect. Service was excellent and the staff responsive to drink requests.
Never disappoints great night enjoyed Valentines Day
This is our 4th visit here. We went for Valentine’s Day dinner. The hostess was completely frazzled upon arrival. She never even acknowledged me (my husband was parking the car). Finally I moved really close to her podium and after a minute of standing there she kind of acknowledged me. I just chimed in to and said “hi I booked on open table. After that she made it still seem like a process and so complicated. Then another girl actually took over and sat us. It really wasn’t that busy considering it was Valentine’s Day but I don’t know what all of the confusion seemed to be. So once we sat our server was very nice and polite. Took our drink order yada yada yada. We ordered some appetizers and he finally brought some bread. We Ordered the bang bang style Collie flower which we have had before and it was very good so we opted for that again. However this time many of the pieces were actually called in the middle and we finished about half of it and decided we didn’t want to buy into any more cold pieces so we let him take it. We got another appetizer which was a beef dish which was very good. Then we ordered our dinner and waited. And waited andddd waited. Finally came and only mine came. The server told my husband that somebody in the kitchen took his plate and served it to somebody else. And then he offered him a different kind of fish in place of it and my husband felt obligated to take that one so we could at least eat her dinner together and mine not get cold. So he accepted the offer of the grouper... he was highly disappointed. The waiter did check on us and asked... my husband in around about way told him that he was disappointed. The server didn’t acknowledge it but I guess at this point it was water under the bridge. While there the kitchen was nearby and it’s open and there was a “gentleman” back there constantly screaming & swearing at other staff and getting visibly irate. It happens in kitchens but he was in plain view & earshot. Kind of awkward.
We had a great evening with friends on Valentine ‘s Day. Everything was fantastic especially our server Gabby. A truly “cannot miss “restaurant .
Very nice place to eat. Elegant and very delicious. Nice to find a quiet place to eat. We both enjoyed it.
As is the custom, The Port Land Grille did not disappoint. I have always found the food delicious and cooked to perfection. The wine list is unbeatable and the service unmatched. We visit this restaurant for at least two special occasions each years as well as a couple of times in between. It is truly special.
First time at the restaurant, won't be the last. Great for special occasions, it was Valentine's Day and my wife's birthday. Our waiter was great, the tempo of the service just right. I had read a review on their coffee rubbed ribeye, so I ordered it and was not disappointed. It was exceptional. As I said, will be back.
Dined on Valentine’s Day...very festive. Food was fresh and delicious even with a huge crowd.
If you want a steak.. make your first stop at Port Land. Aged beef.. melts in your mouth. Ours was cooked perfectly and choice of sides makes each entree deliciously different.
Hands down the best dining experience my wife and I have had in Wilmington and we eat out often.
Outstanding as always. Best restaurant in the area for date night.
Super, as always! We’ve coming here for 15 years and have always had a first-class experience — service, food preparation, ambiance, menu variety — the best in Wilmington! Love it
FIRST TIME EXPERIENCE. EVERYTHING FROM APPETISER TO DESERT WAS TOP NOTCH. WILL DEFINITELY GO BACK AS WELL AS RECOMMEND.
