Porkchop is a restaurant and bar that dishes out an urban interpretation of a Southern backwoods experience. It is an unapologetically unpretentious neighborhood party spot serving gourmet Southern comfort food and BBQ, and featuring an innovative ‘lowbrow’ bar program with some of the world’s top whiskeys. Food was really good; initially surprised about the size of the apps but that was short lived once the entre came. The service was a little slow and the waiter/bartender never gave us much chance to react after they had asked us something. Overall, great food in a small space
Pros: The food was delicious! The decor and atmosphere of the bar/restaurant was very cool.
Cons: We made a reservation following a graduation. There was only one person working which seemed odd on a UIC graduation day. So the service was inevitably a little slow. Also ordered a bloody mary and they didn't have them. I don't think I have ever been to a bar/restaurant that didn't serve bloody marys. Again just a little strange.
Overall we would recommend giving it a try.
We went there for dinner and after walking in it was pretty empty except for the loud family who had kids running around like it was there house and you can tell they have been there a while because the server never went over to them, the tables and floors were sticky, the bathroom looked like we were at a late night bar and it was only 530 on a Sunday. We had intentions to order dinner but only got as far as appetizers. We ordered nachos with pork waited 20 mins for them and they finally came out cold and by the looks of they I wasn't sure I was at a high school cafeteria or BBQ joint, the taste was ok it was mostly chips with a little cold cheese and cold pork. After that we left.
We didn't like the selection of the menu or the food. The fried chicken had no seasoning, the green bean were not good, but they did comp us for that. The grits were absolutely horrible, the were lumpy and hard, my husband put butter in them and tried to fix them up, but it just didn't work. This was not a good experience for us and we will not visit again or recommend this restaurant to anyone. The service was very good, if the food was as good as the service everything would have been alright. This was also our first time there and this is the restaurant we choose. We said we should have went to Nandos which was a couple of doors down or we could have went to Wishbone. We wish we could have gotten our money back, we were not pleased at all.
Food was average at best. Service was awful. Was 8:00 on a a Saturday night and the place was empty. You would think that with so few patrons, the service would be better. Maybe others have figured out that the West Loop has much better offerings elsewhere.
The ambiance is nice;the mimosa were really good and cheap. However , the food was horrible . I expected more and I was let down. The people I came with they enjoyed the food for what it was;Very tasteless . I am a person that doesn't use salt but the food needed more " doctoring up" .
Brought a group of 17 people to eat at Porkchop-Westloop after my graduation. A lot of them do not usually eat out or eat the food served at Porkchop. But we all loved it! Great service, even when the wrong order was made or when the food wasn't what we expected.
Found the room laid-back and comfortable (but it was pretty cold inside). Food we had - BBQ - was good, not great, but I did enjoy the gumbo quite a bit. Best thing about Pork Chop is the staff, friendly and attentive. A nice perk was the $5 shot and beer bar special - awesome!
The food was good which made up for the fact that the service was TERRIBLE. We saw two tables walk in and get seated but leave because it took so long for a server to come over. The waitress working was either new or just didn't know what she was doing because we had to ask multiple times for things and our drinks were forgotten until we walked up to the bar ti get them. We had to ask 3 times for our check even though our table was clear and we had no food. Food was the saving grace of this spot.
The server / waitress on my party's visit was a little brusque and would leave the table making faces if we didn't decide on ordering more quick enough (for her). The food was adequate for a BBQ place; the chicken & waffles was tasty except for the gristle left in the meat.
There are plenty of other BBQ places in Chicago if you're looking for decent offerings of food; at least this place did a decent job with their beer selection.
Also someone was out the back of the restaurant smoking weed and the smoke made its' way through the restaurant; apparently this isn't something to react to.
I was not really impressed. We had the chicken and waffles and the chicken was overcooked and under seasoned. My husband had a shrimp po boy and fries. He really liked his meal and I do agree his fries were really good.
We went for Restaurant Week which the menu was not a deal it actually seemed more expensive than off the regular menu.
We were a little skeptical when we first we're entering because a big boisterous party was pushing its way out. Then we had to change tables becuaseo of cold air blasting down on us. The menu provided lots of tasty choices. It was restaurant week and the waiter informed us of it and gave us the men. This was appreciated because that seldom happens without asking for information. We chose fried ribs and nachos. They were both quite good and big enough to be an entree. Their salads and soup were just as generous and good. We ordered a variety of entrees including fried chicken,the signature pork chop and etouffe. They were excellent and once again generous portions. No wonder this restaurant group keeps expanding. It was worth the drive from the northwest suburbs.
I had a horrible experience at Porkchop. We arrived ten minutes early and no one spoke to us for five minutes asking if we had reservations. I said we had a 815 reservation at 810 and she said they were not ready for us and to sit at the bar, which had no seats. There were also 6 tables open at this time.
We moved to the bar and seats opened up so we ordered drinks. Then we watched the time go by, at this point it was 830. There were now over ten people waiting and a group of loud drunk people bumping into me at the bar. My frustration grew further when I saw a lady who came in after us get seated.
I asked again, "Are we getting seated." The male waiter looked up and said to give him ten minutes. I must have given a bad look because then we were immediately seated.
Once we were seated it was a little better but still ran into a few problems. The dressing was wrong in my salad I ordered, we had our entrees before being asked if we wanted more drinks. The corn was overcooked and the ribs were hard and needed to be cut with a steak knife. The waited was nice and trying but they were obviously understaffed. Communication at the beginning about being understaffed would have been appreciated. We had our drinks comped, which was nice but would not go back here.
The service was terrible, we made a reservation but still waited nearly an hour for our table. They were under staffed. We waited an hour for our food once we'd ordered and it was cold and burnt!! They wouldn't change the burnt rids and we had to ask that they remove them from the bill. Really disappointed experience and no way would I recommend
We went to Porkchop during restaurant week for my boyfriend's birthday. The restaurant week menu gives you a ton of different options and we were so full by the time we left. Definitely a good value for the amount of food you get. The food was good BBQ, not the best I have every had, but solid.
Overall, I was rather disappointed with my experience at porkchop. The food we had ordered was relatively bland and rather dry/overcooked. Sadly, they were also out of several items including one of their signature barbecue sauces and at least one wine. While they noted our meal to be after a busy weekend (Sunday night at 5pm), they seemed to be operating with reduced staff as well - leading to a delay in some service as well. I had higher hopes for porkchop as was unfortunately let down.
very disappointing ... Went at 6pm Saturday night .... we were the ONLY guests and we seem to be a nuisance to the staff who would rather hang at the bar and talk to themselves. Waiter came over, and after we had reviewed the menu, which were ragged/torn sheets of copy paper stuck into an old plastic cover, and began to order an item, he informs us that "oh yeah we haven't gotten around to changing the menus, but a few months ago we decided not to serve a few items anymore." They also have not changed their website menu. And they happen to be the items in which we were interested. What really sunk their boat was that they could NOT make Bloody Mary's as they ran out of mix that morning during their brunch and no one cared enough to go to a grocery store to pick more up. Do them a favor and stay away - they will be much happier.
The service was poor, even though we were the only ones there dining. They didn't have 75% of the cocktails on their list, the pulled chicken was very dry, the bbq pulled pork sandwich had more bbq sauce on it than pork. Overall it was a poor experience. Would not go back
