UPDATE: Management from Porch Cafe contacted me directly and has apologized and offered to make it up to us. They also said they are addressing the issues that led to our poor experience. Credit where credit is due, thank you Porch Cafe for making it right.
Original review: We showed up for our brunch reservation and they weren't open. Some guy came out and said they randomly decided not to open that morning. Why they didn't notify those of us with reservations before we showed up, I have no idea. Obviously this restaurant is ran by a bunch of idiots.
We have loved the Porch Cafe for years, but were very very VERY disappointed by a recent bad experience when we tried to celebrate my wife's birthday. We ended up leaving, as detailed below.
Upon arrival, we were greeted in a cursory and rushed fashion--we're not terribly sensitive, but my wife and I both agreed the greeting felt almost as if we were a burden, not guests.
After ordering drinks and an appetiser, we then had trouble getting our waitress's attention--she only had 2 tables, but was clearly out of her depth. My water cup was never refilled despite explicitly asking. The one redeeming thing about the entire evening was the wine and appetiser we did get were tasty. BUT, when it came time to take our dinner order--30 minutes after we'd arrived--we were told for the 1st time that everything on the menu was sold out except for the chicken. While I'm sure it was tasty, the restaurant was clearly floundering and we did not feel in the mood for chicken, nor terribly confident that it would be done correctly and actually available. (Throughout our time at the restaurant, we watched as the family next to us had its order messed up over and over again....it was wild.)
We decided to go elsewhere, and asked for our check, at which point we were lucky to have caught that we had been charged for an entire bottle of wine, instead of a glass.
I made this reservation several weeks in advance, yet we left the restaurant without dinner, scrambling for any available restaurant (at 9 pm on a Sunday evening) that would still feel special for my wife's birthday--we did not find it, as all other top tier restaurants were booked solid. This was absolutely NOT the birthday experience I had hoped for for my wife!
I am hopeful that these are temporary issues, which will be addressed as the restaurant recovers from the pandemic, but it will be a while before we try out this previously favourite spot again.
We can’t come to Galveston without eating here!!
Wonderful in every aspect!
Good food slow service
We were told that we were going to be seated in the corner and then. Different group was seated there that showed up after us. Then we were shifted inside and waited several minutes before the server came so we ultimately left. Quite disappointed
Horrible dining experience for the price they charged! How could you sent all food out at one time with appetizers and entrees together when I specifically said to starts with soup and salad first. And yet the server blamed on the kitchen. Totally unacceptable. I won’t be dining there for a long time! No wonder they have so many openings when I was making reservations. Disappointing!
Excellent service, and food! The atmosphere is spectacular!
Good food and good service; can’t ask for more in a restaurant
Always a wonderful dining experience! Delicious food, very relaxing location, decent prices! A small menu, but more than sufficient for different tastes! A must if you like a beach ambiance without the sand!!! Beautiful and upscale dining!
food was mediocre... crab cake sandwich was dry with lots of filler and hardly any crab... service was lack-luster,,, prices were high... not worth a return visit
Looking forward to returning again as everything was absolutely perfect, especially since they had not been open for some time. Outstanding...
Our dining experience was wonderful. We saw our server Peter again which made the visit even more special. The food was great; the service over the top.
Ate lunch one day, dinner next. Server Christina was excellent. Love the wedge salad, crab cake, baked goat cheese, French bread, asparagus soup, tomato soup. All good.
Cossey quaint feel, lovely views, great food, great drinks and fantastic service!
What a great find! Awesome food and service and the atmosphere is perfect for brunch!
Exceptional. Will return
It was four of us and we were all satisfied with our meal except my husband who had the chicken & pasta. That's what we almost always get and love it, but that night, it was disappointing.
Porch Cafe remains one of our favorite places in Galveston!
Well we would have loved to go drive to the cafe and was greeted with we are closed! Someone should have called you. Despite having a co firmed reservation ! Very disappointed
Everything was absolutely wonderful and the food was perfect. Great quiet spot in Galveston!
The menu is not extensive to begin with, and they were out of 3 items/entrees. One of which was the hen which was the reason we wanted to try the spot out. They were out of staple items as well like the local beer we ordered and broccoli. Plus, only had one dessert to offer. They said their delivery was a week late. Just run down the road and pick up what you need at Kroger. It's better than making a terrible impression with new customers. The cost for the drinks (martini, old fashioned) was also pricey compared to most other nice places on the island. It may be a nice spot for an event, but we probably won't be back.
Our service was extremely slow considering there were only 3 tables seated. Food was over cooked, and barely edible. Just excuses from wait staff.
We will not go back. It’s a shame as the location is good with views of the Gulf.
The shrimp and grits was phenomenal along with the crab Benedict. Food was well worth the price. Oh and the Bloody Mary mix was to die for. You can tell it was made in house. Wish it was open during the week because I would be returning all the time
They were out of several entree items ie; no scallops or rib eyes, they forgot to include the blue cheese crumbles in the wedge salad.Server was sweet and efficient though.
Food was great, sat outside on the porch facing the gulf, several of the plastic shades did not work and could not be raised, it was disappointing, they were really dirty and obstructed the view. Otherwise our experience was good.
It was our 3rd time to eat there and it has consistently been outstanding. The service was personal and attentive and we ate on the back covered porch which was nice, quiet and felt like we were out in the open.
We started with Bloody Mary which was spiced just right (on the spicy side). She had the eggs, biscuit and bacon (seemed to please her) and I went for the biscuit with sausage gravy. It did not disappoint and surprisingly, did not weigh me down like I thought it might.
I've only been there during the Covid days so I can't comment on the atmosphere when it is at full capacity but I imagine it will be just as pleasant but with a bit more customer chatter.
Currently, reservations are a must. Certainly worth a try, especially for brunch, when you are in the area.
They have the Best Mule drink we ever had at a restaurant. They work as a team and service was great. They had a awesome special that night and it was out of this world..
The fish special was truly outstanding, the crab cake was good and the salad was only fair. Not very fancy, but a good "out of the way" place to try when you are in Galveston
Nice cafe with a helping and Friendly staff .The food was good enjoy the visit
Beautiful restaurant and great staff. The food was outstanding and perfectly prepared! It was an enjoyable experience and would recommend if you like fresh food that is chef inspired.
If you come to the Porch Cafe for Valentine's, you won't be disappointed. Whether you get the vegan or regular salad, the freshness is in the mix, the lobster tail was cooked perfectly and the grilled lemon popped the top on adding the citrus flavor. Now the Ratatouille was divine and the plating blew my mind on the first appearance with its beautiful color, design, and dressing. The Tiramasu gave you a kick with the espresso dust that made you wanting extras!
Great date night spot! Food was delicious and atmosphere was perfect!
It was a great little gem in Galveston. I can’t wait to go back.
I can't rave enough about this island gem. Every experience is as good or better than the next. From the quality of the steak that speaks for itself in flavor to the perfection of the poached egg atop the crab cake Benedict .. The wine selection and service cannot be surpassed and quite honestly I feel like I'm in a resort beach community somewhere else :)
Food and drinks we delicious! Staff was so nice and followed PPE protocol.
I ordered the shrimp and grits. They were absolutely delicious.
