Popoca is a Salvadoran-inspired restaurant in the heart of Oakland. Popoca means “to emit smoke” in Nawat, the language of native people of El Salvador who stoked wood fires to prepare food over a comal for their families. Revered as more than just a means of cooking, smoke represents a prayer or offering to the spirits.

Popoca is a mix of heritage and play. Our food is driven by preserving past, creating something new and uniquely Oakland.

After years of pop-ups, Popoca has its own digs in the Old Oakland neighborhood, where the pupusas, chicken with fermented pineapple sauce, and other Cali-Salvadoran specialties are happily devoured.

food and cocktails were amazing! so many flavors. Gotta try their tres leches cake! But it was a special seafood menu so we want to go back and try their regular menu.

Top notch food, service, and vibes. Tried the Popoca Estilo this time but will definitely be coming back to try more things! Not all food pictured because we were enjoying the food too much to get the shot lol

This was our first visit to Popoca and our overall experience was very good. The one negative was what was available for the Platos; there was no vegetarian or fish option, only meat. When looking at the menu they had online, they did state “it was a sample” and that it changed regularly based on what was available. But being the middle of summer, a vegetarian option would have been nice. With the help of our server, we made it work; ordering a variety of smaller shareable items. Many of the items and flavors were new to us. Some more flavorful than others. Everything was fresh and made to order. My favorites were the Tamale and the salad. For dessert we shared the Flan which was delicious!

Wonderful Menu - My fourth time visiting and service and food are so spectacular, and consistently delicious (while providing seasonal options). A real Gem of a place in Old Oakland neighborhood. THANKS (from a happy neighbor).

Our server Diana N was fabulous. The food is amazing. This was our second visit (from San Diego) and we were looking forward to eating here again. The pupusas, tamal….everything is so good! The tres leches is to die for. Thanks, Rosie

So good. Pupusas are outstanding. Small plates (anchovy tostada, strawberry salad, yuca app) were fire. Can’t wait to return.

Fantastic, beautiful unique food. Great ambiance and vibes. Wonderful service. Popoca never fails to make me happy. The pupusas are amazing. Everything I've had there is delicious.

Amazing food, great service, and a nice atmosphere. We had the tasting menu and definitely recommend doing this. Delicious!
