Polpo - Avalon
A little noisy
Great food! Got the specials which were pricey but delicious. Service still needs work-
We eat here frequently but weren’t as happy this time. We didn’t know they didn’t have usual menu....especially since the usual menu was still on their website. Unfortunately both entrees we went for were not available, and we weren’t as happy with our choices. We always get the grilled octopus appetizer, and although it was good, there was less Octopus than usual and more onions and artichoke. We also had to eat inside which we never do and it was louder and not great ambience. I also think they should serve a side of pasta with their veal dishes.
I ate here in late September 2019. I could say the food was very good, and the service was average, but the thing that still steams me is the ridiculous price charged for a pasta dish, the “special” of the night. To charge 40.95 for a pasta dish when the average pasta dish on the menu is $25 or less is sleazy when there is no warning bu the waiter when he announces the specials. I am not adverse to spending a large amount for something special. In fact that night we knowingly ordered grilled Bronzino for $38.95, but pasta? Give me a break. That night I ordered linguini with calamari, mussels, clams, and shrimp for $28.95, the highest price of any pasta and fish dish, a far cry from 40.95! So I warn you to ask the prices of any”specials” before you get taken like me.
Great dinner and experience! Even on a busy night! We loved it!
Wonderful as always!
The both times we have been there the food is excellent. Noice level is high and in season always busy but you go for the great food!
I have been to this restaurant several times and always had a great dinner and service. Tonight was terrible. They were not busy yet it took over forty five minutes to get our salads. We had to ask three times to get bread. It took another thirty minutes to get our meal. Don’t think I will go back.
We're a regular diner @ POLPO!
The food is excellent and the staff is very attentive.
This is the second time we have gone, the food is very good but service is spotty and the noise is unbelievable. They have squeezed so many tables in that you are almost touching the ones on either side. The first time we went we were rushed, with everything coming so fast you were not fished with the course prior and the second time we thought we would never get out, appetizers came right away and main course about an hour later.
September evening, outside on the patio, delightful ambience, staff a little busy but very nice, food delicious. (We had been inside two weeks previous, it is a little noisier inside). Overall, a great night

Excellent food and service. They need to do more to tone down the noise
Food was good but very noisy inside.
Our waiter (an Italian man who was very new) was terrific. It was my birthday and he sang and made me feel very special. The food was delicious.
Awful service. We had 4 different servers and it took 25 minutes for anyone to even come over to our table after we sat down. They didn’t have iced tea and told me 30 minutes later and they never brought bread. Hostess was rude.
Food was very good but all were $5 more than the other 3 restaurants they own for the same preparation. Service was excellent and the setting was more elegant.
Pasta is very mundane and over priced.
Service and is average.
This was the best experience we have had at Polpo since it opened. The reservation was honored on time. As always food was very good. The seafood Risotto was excellent. Very large portion. Spinach salad was good but not as good as in the past. Companion had the octopus and loved it. This time, unlike all prior times, service was rushed. Our appetizers came immediately. Unfortunately the entrees came before all were finished with the appetizers.
We ate outside and the service and food were great. We have been to his restaurant several times and it is always a great meal. We will be back.
Outstanding service. Food was excellent
I have been to polpo three times. The food has been really tasty each time! Unfortunately, the service has been rather poor each time as well. It just seems like this restaurant is still attempting to establish a routine, even though they have been open for over a year. Servers seem extremely frazzled. Water glasses are not refilled. Bread baskets are not delivered. Specials for the night are not read unless requested. Silverware not delivered with food. There also are not enough bathrooms for the number of customers, and the noise level is pretty high. But the food is so good, I keep coming back.
Food was delicious and service was very good
Will definitely go back
When the restaurant opened the service, food, and atmosphere were wonderful. Since that time, they have added many more tables and squeeze in as many patrons as possible. You are truly inches from the table next to you. The service is quick when you arrive however if you need bread or water refills, it is difficult to flag someone down to replenish. The food is very good however it is not a great experience.
Good food, good service, interesting menu!
The food was good the service was horrible. Really, really bad. Our food took 45 minutes to come out. Our server was not available through most of the night. When asked the timing/status of our order the server indicated..."well you didn't order any appetizers so the wait will be longer as you sit through what normally would be appetizers being served." A smart guy thinking he would BS a customer and be done with it. I saw several frustrated folks experiencing the same horrible service. The timing was early September not the peak season.
HORRID!! Cancelled my reservation through Resy even though I used Open Table. When I arrived and confronted them, the basically told me it was my problem. This is the 3rd negative experience in 4 months and we will not try again. If you are looking for classic old school Italian, there is a great option a few blocks away that treats customers with dignity and respect.
the food was very good and the service was excellent. I recommend outside seating because inside is very noisy.
Polpo is a wonderful and much needed restaurant addition to Avalon. And it's open all year which is even better. Great food, great servers. We love it.
Food was fantastic! The Gnocchi Carbonara was amazing!
Extremely disappointed. To start I got Steamed clams which say white wine and garlic and came in congealed butter. 10 clams 13 shells. I just told them I didn’t want it. They did offer to make it again but I declined. My wife got the shrimp with cannelloni beans. Which was good. We got lasagne for dinner. The sauce was hot but the lasagne was room temperature. It was like the they dump
hot sauce over a slice of lasagne. Lasagne noodle itself was doughy.
Not sure why we got tiramisu but we did. It had good flavor but lady fingers were dry and weren’t soaked in espresso. Overall might be the worst dinner we had all summer at the beach. Our reservation was at 9:15pm. Place was fairly crowded but most folks had food already.
Amazing food, atmosphere and all around great experience. Can’t wait to go back. Our waiter was ok. He definitely got better by the end.
We have given polpo 3 chances and will not be giving them a fourth chance. They were overbooked, the staff are poorly trained therefore service was horrible, we had a reservation but didn't seat us till 20 minutes after that time, once we were seated it was over an hour until someone came with water bread and napkins, and the noise level is very high making it hard to hear friends.
Our favorite place to go in Avalon. Food & service are consistently very good. Prefer to sit outside when weather permits!
Most of the food was great, specials a little pricey ($41) and caprese salad did not use Jersey tomatoes, a slight disappointment.
Deg! Deg deg!
Great place! Very busy but great food and great service! Happy to go again and again.
The food was absolutely delicious! First time there, would definitely go back again.
The food and service were excellent. The inside was very loud.
Angel hair w/ lump crab in light marinara was outstanding!!
Ate outside which was fine BUT the black flies were horrible ~ get citronella candles going ASAP !!
