Policy Ratings and Reviews
We have been to Policy many times and it's always been good. It would have been nice if they would have let us know they were remodeling. And clearly, even with a reduced menu selection, they cannot remodel and prepare a meal at the same time. The food was absolutely horrible.
We went for brunch and the drinks were the main reason we went. The price for the bottomless mimosas and bloody Mary's was good and we definitely enjoyed it. The music was also really good and the rooftop was a nice addition to the experience. Can't say the food is good though, that's the only downside.
Unfortunately, we didn't even get to experience the restaurant. We walked in to no hostess, opened the door to the right where the main restaurant used to be. Of course the missing knob should have tipped up off for the construction on the other side of the door. No sign. Nothing saying closed. So we walk upstairs to where there was always additional seating and a bar to learn that that is now the "restaurant". We went to the bar and told the bartender that we had a reservation and were given menus. NOTHING like what was online. The menu is a short spaced out one pager with breakfast basics like All-American style. After asking about the menu, we were told, "oh yea. We are under construction. I'm sure if you looked st yelp pictures, this isn't anything that was on there and probably not what you were expecting". With that, we said thank you, and called a restaurant up the street to try.
Menu was sub par and didn't reflect the menu on open table. Therefore we were very disappointed in the options listed. Everything was pretty basic. Service for bottomless drinks were slow. We asked for a side of bacon and we were told they couldn't accommodate this request.. which was odd. But the server came back and said they could after all.
The service was honestly the worst part. It took a long time for a server to come to our table and once she finally came we waited a long time for drinks and food. Our server never came back once the food was dropped off until we were all set. From there we asked for the check and waited another 20 minutes before she came back having forgotten we asked for the check. The food was bland and over priced. It wasn't worth getting a cocktail as it took the bar forever to make them. There is a reason this place was completely empty on a Saturday night...
I would not come back here and would not recommend this to anyone.
Policy wasn't bad, but my husband and I weren't overly impressed by either the drinks or the food. I found the food to be very salty, and we even left some of our food behind because we didn't love the flavor. Again it wasn't bad, but just wasn't overly impressive.
We had a quick dinner before a show at the Lincoln Theater, and loved the food. We sat outside and it was quite early, so I can't reflect on the noise level or the ambiance. The food was delicious, served in small plates/large plates style. The yuca fries and the chicken empanadas were delicious to start, which we followed with the duck breast and the mushroom and sweet potatoes with black-eyed peas. I also had a glass of white wine. Everything was nicely presented, fairly priced and delicious. We will return.
This was the first stop (of many) on the day of my birthday celebration.
We came in for brunch and everyone enjoyed their meals. The mimosas were absolutely delicious. Our server was awesome and she had a fun demeanor. This was everyone's first time at the restaurant and we all agreed we'd return for another round!
Policy was okay we had a surprise: going away brunch here. We did have reservations. More people can then I thought. We was accompanied but it seem like people was upset. Out good came out late. We had a noise complaint, that set a bad mood over our day. Overall it was okay but not what I thought it would be.
I am deeply saddened that Policy has removed their Shrimp & Grits from their now underwhelming menu. While many restaurants offer shrimp & grits, no one makes it like Policy did. Their's was on a whole other plane and the sole reason I trekked into the district, past so many other, now better dining choices, on Saturday mornings. I probably won't be back to put up with the raucous, millennial, bottomless drink crowd.
Came for dinner with two friends for Restaurant Week. I appreciated the diverse selection of dishes available for the four-course tasting menu. While the service was above average and the food quite tasty, the half-wall between the bar and dining area did little to shield us from the very lively bar! It was difficult to carry on a conversation and the tables were packed closely together, making it difficult to access our table from the bathrooms or to enter/exit the restaurant. However, I would consider coming again for drinks or to check out their upper level space.
Great food, great atmosphere. Service was a touch slow (restaurant week so I am giving them the benefit of the doubt) but our waitress was great and wonderful about it. Restaurant is a touch loud (sometimes it was hard to hear) but that is nothing uncommon with places like these (also, restaurant week probably played a role). Definitely coming back though!
This experience was really lackluster. We tried to order off the special Wednesday night make-your-own arepa menu, but the waitress had no idea what we were talking about and didn't ask to find out (this is a special that's listed on their website as of recently, and currently is there). What we ordered was fine - my boyfriend's arepa was like if you put popcorn chicken in a really thin crust corn object. The environment was pretty depressing too. Not planning to come back.
I've heard about this place a few times from some friends that are DC locals. I decided to give it a try for a friends welcome home/birthday party the other night. The prices were great, the food was delicious, and even though they did not have the wine I wanted in particular, the bartender went above and beyond to create a mixture of two wines for me to mimic that flavor. Overall we had a great experience. I believe my servers name of Andrew, he was amazing. I hear the brunch is delicious also.
