Food was good but a little overpriced for the entrees. Portion was small but service was good. If you like to try new restaurants this is the place to try. Only opened 3 months ago.

I really like POGU and I hope they do well. I’ll provide many reasons why I choose to keep coming back! First off, want to say that I am Korean and grew up going to Korea twice a year since I was three years old. I grew up eating my Korean grandmother’s food as well as my mom who made delicious home-cooked meals. There’s a lot of San Francisco and Bay Area critics’ reviews. Or better said, critical reviews. If you’re looking for a Michelin star rated experience, go to Benu! Here, you pay $20-$30 per dish, but Benu is where you can get that service with $50-$100 per dish. Yes, the food is cooked by a Michelin star rated chef, and the ingredients are fresh and inspired by temple food cuisine. It’a not a formal setting but the decoration and cutlery/plating is still aesthetic. I would say, you come to experience a light protein with temple food cuisine inspiration food in an aesthetic yet casual setting. It reminds me of Korea’s department store upscale restaurants. If you do not know what temple food is, I suggest you perplexity it. And if “Korea’s department store, upscale restaurants” turned you off, I will assume you have never been to Korea and experienced the fanciness or cultural experience of it. visit Korea and see what I’m talking about. I do have to ask for refills on banchan (side dishes) often but they always do so. And the bread now comes with a soufflé cream which I appreciate because it’s bland without it. If I can make one rec atm, I’d say, give us a small cup of shikhae or meshil juice at the end of the meal to make it even more a Korean feel :) All this to say, I hope POGU will be successful! I hope it will do well and continue to be a place of a Korean experience that is different and unique from your typical/ past Korean food experience, that is unlike the K BBQ or K street food or mom and pop like K food.

Overall, I wouldn’t recommend this restaurant. I was disappointed with my experience at this restaurant. Despite the claim that it's backed by Korea’s first Michelin-starred chef, the food did not meet the expectations such a reputation creates. When a restaurant advertises itself at that level, the performance should reflect it—but unfortunately, it didn’t. The dishes reminded me of business class airline meals. While they used fresh vegetables and tried to present things nicely, the overall flavor was lacking. I left feeling overly full but unsatisfied, which made the experience even more unpleasant. The service was also off-putting. While the interior design is beautiful, the service style felt rushed and impersonal—more like a casual street food spot than a fine dining restaurant. Orders were taken the moment we sat down, food arrived in under five minutes, and the check was brought out immediately after we finished eating. Staff even stood nearby while we were settling the bill, which made us feel rushed and uncomfortable.

I have had better Korean food. The announcement that a Michelin chef was opening a restaurant in a Mall was enticing. The food was Meh. But the service was outstanding and ambience great. The restaurant was mostly empty at lunch. Had dessert outside of the restaurant and we tried several kinds-all stale. Expensive as they were, we threw away the desserts.

I thought the food was trying hard to be mediocre, but didn't quite make it. If this is the product of a Michelin Star chef, Michelin better reevaluate its system. The Korean food was wan and tasteless, unlike any of the local Korean eateries. Eg. Bulgolgi was served warm, not hot, on a mass of warm, not hot, rice. My experience of Bulgolgi is it is marinaded, served hot, right off the grill, with onions, on a hot plate. Eg. Blue Crab with cabbage starter was not blue crab, at all, but fake crab (probably pollock) served sliced, devoid of flavor, wrapped in seaweed, with little cabbage in sight. My wife's fish stew was somewhat better, but that's a stretch. Other dishes included mountain greens and noodles earning a not bad rating. Kimchee was in short supply, requiring a request for more and when finally served, was in similar short supply. If this was meant to be fusion cuisine, it lacked any defining characteristic of either Asian or Western. Cafeteria, more like, but not the check.
