One of the consistently best restaurants in town. Amazing food and drinks, terrific staff, and the back garden is magical.
We discovered this jewel of a restaurant long before the Covid restrictions. We were thrilled and relieved when they remained open for take out. We relied upon and enjoyed their food throughout the pandemic. It was a joy to actually go to the restaurant in person last night (Juneteenth) with an elderly couple we hadn't seen for 16 months. We sat on the lovely, peaceful back patio.
Our server was attentive, pleasant and very professional and helpful (as always). The staff is one of the chief joys and attractions to this establishment.
We had the excellent tomato soup (a fave), which didn't disappoint, the charcuterie plate (always a delight), the agnolotti al plin pasta, the taglietelle ala Nona, a rich bolognese meat sauce pasta, and the spinach ravioli. All exquisitely prepared and perfectly presented. In addition, for starters, there was the tuna tartar that the diner said was lovely and a spring greens salad, a delight for the eye, as well as the palatte. For a side dish, we all ordered the superb grilled baby asparagus. It did not disappoint.
Dessert was a delicious cannolo, a chocolate mousse and their cloud-like panna cotta with fresh strawberries.
We just can't say enough good things about Poesia. We've never had a bad meal from them, either dining in or take out. It is highly recommended and a true sparkling star in San Francisco.
So great to be back for a great dining experience again. Love the Negronis!
We like to start with the meat and cheese plate which is probably enough for four, but the two of us polish it off. I usually have a fish entree since I’m already half full. The accompanying purée and veges are cooked perfectly and have so much flavor. The pasta dishes are delicious. Both the filled pastas and the various sauces are amongst the best I’ve had. Start at the bar where Chad will make you a killer cocktail. Looking forward to taking some out of town friends there this summer.
Everything is ok because just back from COVID-19. cannot expect too much !
Service was a little slow, but they are reopening from lockdown, so it may be that they have less staff than usual. However even though the service was slow, the service was great...and the food was phenomenal.
The outside patio is so lovely. Out of the wind and cozy. This is one of our favorite places to eat in SF. The food is consistently good, and the thing that makes them so special is that their menu has authentic Italian food from every region! And the cocktails are just the cherry on top of a great dining experience.
We ha d a lovely dinner at Poesia. I am a big fan because they have gluten free pasta and they make it so perfectly that you can’t tell it’s gluten free. Two of our party are vegans and they enjoyed the vegetables, tomato and bread soup, My souse had the fish and really enjoyed it. The tiramisu and chocolate mousse were good, but small for the price. The wine list is a bit spendy, but we liked what we had. Definitely a great dinner and a lovely outdoor setting.
Food is fresh and well-prepared. Service is excellent. One of the best in the city.
Not your usual Italian restaurant, serving authentic dishes you probably won't find elsewhere. Friendly service and intimate ambiance.
We had an early dinner. We got sick. Not sure if it was the meat sauce or the wine. We had the Italian equivalent to a Pinot noir. There was only one that day. We ate a non meat ravioli and the pasta with meat sauce. Pasta is made in house and is very good. The people and the service also good so I cant say it’s all bad. I don’t think we will go again as this was our second time and it’s not on our top 10 must go again and again list. Anyway - people do rave about this place and I am sure it depends on your own experience. Oh but- the basil infused cocktail is a little must. Worth going for at least that!!!
I love Poesia. The food is amazing and the hospitality backs it up. Great wine selection and an educated staff always happy to make suggestions. The pastas are sublime.
The food presentation was lacking. The vegetable dish was a miss, the taste of the individual varieties of vegies was lost to the charred taste. The bruschetta was not memorable. The bass plate was fine but nothing that wowed us. The house made ravioli was good. Service was good but not as warm as I thought is was going to be after seeing this restaurant reviewed on Check Please. We may go back to try some other pasta dishes. We did have a window seat with a great view to the neighborhood.
Great food! Great wine! Great service! Fun silent Italian movies playing on the wall. Definitely one of the best restaurants in the Castro.
Loved it! Good food great ambiance
Love this restaurant. They just need a second bathroom.
Thank you for the birthday dinner
We had an excellent dinner at Poesia. Had to park a couple of blocks away, but it was a good way to walk off dinner. There was a drag show on the front sidewalk (it was a Thursday), which made it a perfect visit to the Castro. Our waiter was excellent (13 year veteran) and made our dinner a fun and delicious experience. We sat on the patio and the ambiance was inviting. We were not rushed (although it was busy so we waited quite a long time for food), and were able to enjoy each other's company in a moderately loud environment.
The food was delicious, but like most good restaurants in SF, it was on the expensive side, and we ordered quite a few appetizers, shared meals, and desserts to be full but not overfull. The waiter made some recommendations which were spot on: the filet, the duck, the seafood pasta, the bruschetta, burratta, panna cotta, and chocolate mousse.
For a fine evening out, we definitely recommend Poesia. It was a great way for us to break out of the pandemic state of mind!
This was our first visit back to Poesia in person since SIP. Everything was just as wonderful as we remembered. The martini drinks, pear salad, duck, agnolotti and dessert were delicious. Seeing Francesco at the door and Matia behind the bar was a welcome sight.
So glad we found this little gem. We saw it on KQED Check please. Cozy restaurant. Friendly staff and food was delicious. Reminded me of my Italian Grandmothers food.
We will definitely return.
We were seated in the back patio- very charming atmosphere. We had the spinach ricotta ravioli and tagliatelle bolognese. Absolutely delicious fresh pasta. Almost as good as Italy!
We had a wonderful dinner in their back patio! Great service, delicious food, and a nice atmosphere.
Excellent food here, can't be beat. Friendly staff, good bar drinks.
We will be coming back! Such a great atmosphere and the food was amazing. They also have gluten free pasta which was so so good. If you can sit in the back courtyard it’s so cute! And warm! All the food was so amazing we will definitely be back soon.
We enjoyed the vegetable appetizer, pasta and chocolate mousse. Unfortunately, the seabass was dry and salty to the point you cannot even tell that it was seabass.
We were party of 3. 5:30 reservation. Arrive on time. The outdoor backyard dining was empty at the time we arrived. Two of us had the same pasta dish (small portion but tasty), my friend had the grilled vegetables (good) and we shared 1 salad. No drinks and tax and tip: $48 per person. Sadly we didn't like where they sat us. Being seated at a long, empty table for 6 where there were several preferred empty tables for 4. They wouldn't budge with another table option request. Overall not worth the price I'm sorry to say.
A charming neighborhood find with delicious food, great service and lovely ambiance. We ate inside but will try the beautiful patio next time, which transforms you to Tuscany. We can't wait to go back
Great wine, great food, great service! We went on a Wednesday evening and despite being mid-week there were still a fair number of guests dining both inside and on the back patio. We ate outside and liked that we got to walk thru the kitchen and see the hustle and bustle going on to get there. Loved our meal which included a bottle of red, gluten free tagliatelle and a serving of their veal/rabbit pinched ravlioli pasta, marinated olives, and for dessert tiramisu and lemon ginger sorbet. Definitely recommending to friends and family to come for a meal and can't wait for another visit!
An Italian gem in the colorful and lively Castro. The Victorian house adds to the charming ambiance accompanied by equally charming staff.
Fresh homemade pastas with both traditional and innovative sauces and presentation.
Don’t forget the Classico Chianti!
Earliest reservation for 2 we got was 8:30, by then we had our cocktails and a few glasses of wine elsewhere, so we ordered a glass of wine each (usually we share a bottle) but felt the server wasn’t attentive enough as we shared a salad and each had a pasta, maybe our tab wasn’t high enough? That is the feeling we got. We had to ask for bread and salt and pepper as salad lacked seasoning but was fresh. I still left a good tip, about 18% but generally would tip 25%+ but not this time. Pastas were great and place was charming.
I hate to let everyone know how good this place is. I am afraid I won't get a table.
This excellent restaurant is owned by a true Italian named Francesco. All the food is cooked by Italians. It is truly the best Italian restaurant in San Francisco. Every time we visit from Las Vegas this restaurant is a must. There is an Italian waiter named Mattia. He always helps us pick out the best dishes. He also knows his wine better than most. You can’t go wrong with Poessa.
Great outdoor garden, nicely fitted out, authentic Italian food and atmosphere and terrific servers. Also did I mention a great bar tender who makes fantastic drinks.
Amazing food. Great cocktails
The owner, Francesco and his staff are amazing! They are so welcoming, friendly, knowledgeable and genuine! I continue to be a patron of this authentic and delicious Italian restaurant.
The food was tasty, however, the portions seem to continue to get smaller and smaller. The service was poor. Our server seemed to be concerned more with clearing the table than providing a quality experience. She tried to take our plates when we were clearly still eating and brought the check without us asking for it. Although, we were one of two tables with people dining at the time, it was clear she either did not want us there or was in a rush for us to leave. Either way, the food did not make up for the poor service. After dining there multiple times, there are many more good, higher quality Italian restaurants in SF that we will take our business to in the future. It’s disappointing when businesses are clambering for customers to return, the level of service should match the quality of establishment.
Poesia is worth every five star rating it receives. Absolutely fantastic!
Fabulous as always!! One of my favorite restaurants!
First time there. Will return again to try other menu items.
Very welcoming staff. Friendly atmosphere, very Italian vibe and feel.
