Nestled in the middle of the vibrant and colorful neighborhood of the Castro, Poesia features the finest in hand-made, traditional ingredients and pastas, combined with meticulous preparation and presentation that is second to none.
It is with every intention to give our patrons a warm, intimate experience with superior attention not just to our menu, but to the relationship we have with every guest.
Our hearty and delightful dishes will embody the passion and zest of Italian cuisine coming from the owner's home of Calabria, teasing your palette with rustic herbs and fruitful aromas.
Poesia. Italian for poetry, yet the embodiment of an experience that is so much more.
Way too expensive for pasta. Over $100 a person......................no need to return there.
Festa di Ringraziamento
We ate at Poesia for the first time on Thanksgiving night. My husband and I had 7pm reservations and arrived a few minutes early and was seated immediately. The restaurant filled up within 30 minutes and amazingly the sound level was not ear-splitting. Our server was outstanding and while we know California wines, we do not know Italian wines very well. He made a recommendation for an Amarone wine that was excellent with the meal. We let him pick the appetizer and the Baccala was so good we are going to try making some at home. We couldn't make up our mind on the entrees as there were three dishes that we wanted to try and he split all 3 for us and served them as different courses (tortellini in broth, homemade fettucini with a lamb ragout and veal osso bucco). If I was to go back I would skip the tortellini only because the other two dishes were so good and leave more room for dessert. We live a couple hours away but will make a trip back to the city just for this restaurant. Very cozy, great atmosphere, full bar and some bar seating in case you don't have reservations.
Feels like being in a cozy home; Good Italian date and nice service
We love this restaurant. The food quality and service are very consistent. Great atmosphere.
Every Staff member was friendly and joyful. The food was amazing. The price is right.
My 2nd attempt at wanting to like this restaurant, but didn't really wow me. Food delivery was slow and my steak came out Medium Well instead of Medium Rare as recommended by the waiter. He did comp us 2 glasses of wine for the long wait time for the entree. And he was super nice.
Outstanding neighborhood gem in the Castro. Great food and ambiance.
Delicious food and lovely ambiance and location. However, after we were seated no one came to open our bottle of wine or take our order for about 20-25 minutes. When the wait staff finally did come by and I let them know how long we had been waiting, they barely apologized and did not offer any compensation. Will go again just because the food was so good but disappointed in the service for such a pricey meal.
Food was delicious at Poesia. Service was incredibly slow. Tried to order a cocktail, was told they couldn't make it, then ordered a different one. after a very long time it arrived, and it was the wrong cocktail! they didn't agree with me, but then decided yes, i was right...so they didn't charge us.
Food was delicious - espcially the small plates to start and the lamb ragu
Just don't be in a hurry and you'll have a great time! delicious bread basket too
One of the best meals I have had in SF! Amazing and authentic italian food including handmade pasta, great cocktails, and an incredibly warm, attentive and knowledgeable staff. I will be back!
Pietro was a wonderful server and took care of our every wish. We love the atmosphere, movies on the wall and the meal was absolutely delicious. We can’t wait to go again 🤗
What an amazing night! The owner treated us with homemade Italian chili marinated in olive oil! Amazing!! Grazie !!
The food was good as always. Service wasn’t the best tonight and it wasn’t busy. I had to ask three times and wait 20 minutes for my cocktail but apart from that it was great.
Beautiful room, beautiful people and fabulous food and wine. Perfect - although a bit loud.
A San Francisco gem. Small, elegant, warm and inviting. Never disappoints.
What a find. In the heart of San Fran lies a gem I had yet to try. We had a delicious burrata, a scrumptious lamb ragu, and we each had one of their signature cocktails before diving into the Lizzo concert later that evening. Run don’t walk to this very friendly, very delectable restaurant. You’ll be glad you did. FIVE STARS
Simple basic Italian dishes with good quality hand made pasta. Service was friendly and welcoming. Very good experience overall.
This was one great meal. And my wife and I joined our friends for this meal. The food was excellent service was excellent and the ambience was excellent I would come here again on a dime
We enjoyed the pastas, as well as the tomato soup. Service was good and attentive. We had not expected it to be as noisy as it was -- not the worst, but somewhat difficult to hold a conversation.
Very good neighborhood gem - menu is a bit limited, but adorable spot! Loved the movie projected on the wall!
I love this place! It's one of my few favorite spots that I wouldn't hesitate to visit at anytime and have definitely told friends about it as well. It's relaxing, amazing cocktails, great food, and a variety of wines are always available. And if your not quite sure what wine to pick when you have a group eating a variety of foods, the waitstaff is amazing at helping and giving options so that whatever you drink, will certainly go with what everyone is eating. There's always an Italian movie playing on the back wall, and they are always sure to be comedies. It's not to loud, yet intimate and relaxing all-in-one. Definitely make reservations, as this place is a "hot"spot if you want to sit at a table, otherwise they have a lovely bar, but this too gets filled pretty quickly.
As always, great food, perfect service and relaxed atmosphere. Love this restaurant.!
We dined as a couple and one of us had the duck ravioli and the other had the shredded lamb shank ragu. Both were delicious. Portions sizes were exactly right given their quality ingredients. The breads were delicious too. Service was very friendly, and Poesia felt both casual and chic.
I've been a patron off and on for years, and have always thought Poesia is a pretty-good local restaurant with very good service and somewhat-better-than-average food. But something has happened the past few months -- the food in my last two visits has been excellent. Whether it's a new cook, or a new attention to detail in the kitchen... whatever it is, keep up the good work. You'll be seeing a lot more of me if you do!
Wonderful meal. Went early and we're seated right away. We had the meatball appetizer, and the fresh bread they make. Tender and very flavorful. Ordered the half chicken, squid ink pasta, and 2 lamb shank pastas. We loved the flavors and presentation; also, the baked potato and polenta sides. The potatoes are sliced whole and cheese and filling between the slices. The polenta is slightly firm; it is very creamy in flavor and has a buttery taste served with Shitake mushrooms and cheese melted in to it. It was so rich and done perfectly. Only regret is we didn't have room for dessert.
Great place for food and wine in a cool country Italian setting with vintage silent Italian films screening on the back wall. One of the best places to dine in the city!
Best meal we had on our trip! Gorgeous seafood, meal sizes were perfect, the pasta was divine, and the tiramisu was soooooo delicious. Everything perfect- would definitely visit again on our travels to USA.
Decided to give this place a try based on check please reviews. Staff are super friendly, scene is energetic & hip, with fun decor including an older Italian film running on one wall. Dinner was quite good. We shared a panzanella salad, My squid ink pasta with seafood was delicious, my companion enjoyed his pasta with lamb ragout. Desserts also good: rhum baba & cheese cake. There were daily specials offered. My companion did not order wine, but our waiter brought him a complimentary glass anyway & when I finished the glass I ordered he brought me a comped glass also. A nice touch.
Diners were a mixed bag, couples & groups of varying orientations. Good place for a small group celebration. Only downside was noise level once restaurant filled up. Parking can be difficult in the area, but we were lucky. Nevertheless taking Muni or uber to this area is a good idea.
I will recommend this place to friends.
The white stuff and owner are amazing. They provide excellent customer service and the food is very tasty. I would highly recommend this place to anyone who is interested in having great authentic Italian food.
We had a fantastic dinner. Our server, Pietro, took fantastic care of us and made our dining experience really special.
Quick service & sweet waiters.
Ordered an appetizer and then after we received our beer, was asked what we wanted for dinner, reluctantly I ordered our meals and those came out immediately. We canceled the appetizer. Once we received the check the appetizer was still part of the bill! Had to ask for them to remove. Then when we got it they said oh you might need to check if the cancellation actually went through. Lots of pictures on the wall of famous people, but who cares? There is no need to go back...
Food and service was great. Unfortunately, San Francisco was experiencing a heat wave and Poesia has NO air conditioning.
Love Poesia - every time we have been there, service is outstanding and food is excellent! Always get the special pasta (usually ravioli) and have never been disappointed. Server suggested a nice white with the ravioli - spot on! Looking forward to a return visit.
Perfect! The eggplant parm was excellent as well as the service. Thanks!
Our server was attentive and fun. Good food and cocktails. Really enjoyed the ambiance. We will ill return.
While the seafood pasta dish two of us had was very good, my husband's Sea Bass was not very enjoyable by him. He complained of bones in the fish, as well as biting into scales, which had to be spit out, of course. He ate less than half of the fish, so he was hungry afterwards - we walked up to Hot Cookie and I bought him his favorite to help quell his hunger.
Usually the food is good, so that's why we invited out-of-town guests there on this occasion. I'm just glad their dishes seemed okay.
This is REAL Italian food in the Castro. The staff who are mostly Italian are wonderful charming and great fun! They snatched a great bartender from the closed Eureka
