Plum Bar + Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
I really want to like this place -I’m a huge oakland supporter (since I live and work here), the space is great, interesting crowd. But we had to wait a really long time to get anything to eat or drink. We waited at least 1/2 hour for a glass of wine and about an hour for dinner. And it was not that crowded. Food was ok to above average. I would go back again to sit at the bar and have a drink.
We had the Caprese cocktail and almost died and went to heaven! We are cocktail connoisseurs and this by far is top 5. Plum is a GEM and our favorite place to grab phenomenal drinks and snacks! Music is great, decor is warm and inviting, candle light everywhere. Love it here!
It took 20 minutes to get drinks after we ordered (and enquired several times) while the place was practically empty at 6pm on Saturday night. second round of drinks took just as long as the place was filling up and there were extra bartenders. luckily we were not in a hurry - otherwise would have walked out. no excuse - really bad bar service. drinks were small and expensive on top of bad service. menu very limited food was ok, server was sweet but inefficient (perhaps not her fault). will never return.
My mother and I had dinner here before heading to the Oakland Ballet show. The service was fast. She loved the salad with chicken and I really enjoyed my pre-show cocktail. This place is now my go to for pre-show dining. The food is great and the ambiance helps set the tone for a lovely evening.
We ordered at 6:30. By 7 PM we were asking someone who was not our waitress to please fetch our waitress. She arrived, said "I'll put a rush on your order." A rush? That seemed absurd after a half-hour, but great, thanks. She said "I feel your pain right now." Literally, she said that. She brought us some olives. 7:25 food arrived and we shoveled it in in order to get to our show. No conversation with my friend at that point, pure shoveling. Not how I like to enjoy a dinner out. Wedge salad was fine, far as I could tell in such a hurry, friend told me his grilled cheese sandwich was soggy. On our way out waitress said "Be well."
The drinks are wonderful, and they have lots of varieties of cocktails, all of which have been great. The food, on the other hand, has been hit or miss. The tofu bowl didn't have much flavor and the sauce tasted more like mayonnaise than coconut. I had the wedge salad which was quite good. My friend had the fRied chicken wings, which were crispy and delicious but the spicy broccoli wasn't very good. It was spicy but not very flavorful. Compared with other restaurants in the area, I don't think the food is as good.
Despite a 5:30 reservation and the fact that we got our table when the restaurant was almost empty, the staff soon got slammed. I got my food before my date, there was an error in the order, and we had to flag people to order a second drink and to eventually get our check. Wasn't very smooth...
I've been here a number of times over the years, and the cocktails are still great but the food menu is not as good as it was. The Happy Meal (burger, fries, whisky, beer) is a great deal, but WHY in the name of all that is holy would you put "quinoa falafel" on nachos?!? Sacrilege. I can't even...
We came with friends before Speakers Series. Food is good, but so few options. Seating is difficult. We have only ever been seated by the front door, where a cold burst of air comes in whenever the door is opened. Seating is hard wood chairs, no cushions available. Always crowded and high noise level. Am I just getting too old for this type of setting?
Very good food but mediocre service. I only dined here because of its proximity to the Paramount Theater which was ultra convenient. This place has a lovely and welcoming ambiance which puts you in a good mood right away. The service, however, was just OK starting ominously when I couldn't find anyone at the front desk and found two of the staff people chatting with their friends at the bar. I had to ask if anyone was going to wait on me. There was also a hint of irritation expressed by our server if you can't interpret the menu. For example, there's an entree called the "Happy Meal" comprised of your choice of a burger, fries and the name of a beer/bourbon that wasn't familiar to me. As someone who never frequents McDonalds and thus unfamiliar with what a happy meal is, I was told this was a riff off their happy meal: burger, fries and a soda except that the soda is a beer and a bourbon chaser -- for $26. Cute gimmick but here's a hint - just order the chicken po' boy sandwich and you'll save $8 if you don't want the beer/bourbon.
This is a fairly small dining room and service should not be an issue but it appeared that they may have been understaffed. Timing was off in terms of getting our drinks to us (we watched the one bartender hustling and he could have used a bar back), the waitress seemed unable to anticipate needs (clearing a bread plate and fork before bringing a replacement dish and utensils to use while sharing a wonderful cobb salad). All in all, the food is great but I expected a refund for having had to get my own napkin, plate and fork while our server was missing in action.
Went here for a date. Managed to get a table up front by the window. The cocktails and food were good. We shared a couple of the small plates. Definitely recommend the brussel sprouts. There was only one server running the floor while we were there, but he did an excellent job getting to all his tables. The noise level was slightly on the high side, but was still able to socialize with my date.
Our reservation meant nothing. We stood at the front, just inside the doors, for 10 minutes, unacknowledged by any staff. Once we let someone know about our reservations, they disappeared for another 10 minutes before we were seated. Once seated, we waited another 15 minutes before anyone came to offer water or ask for a drink order. When the drinks finally came, they were wrong, it was for a table that sat after us. Once our food came out of the kitchen, it was served to the table behind us, brought back to the kitchen, then back to our table. The staff (not our server) dropped the food off, did not specify which burger was which, immediately took off his apron, threw a jacket on and went outside. We were not asked if we needed anything (we would have appreciated a little ketchup or aioli) and after ANOTHER 10 minutes of no one checking on us, we had to leave our seats to ask someone, anyone, if we could get a little bit of ketchup. It was not busy. I've been in food service since I could work and understand that certain circumstances come up and it can be hard to juggle a lot of tables/tasks, but I couldn't find any reasons that could justify the experience we had that night. The only upside was the stiff drinks.
