Plein Sud Ratings and Reviews
We were visiting Montréal from the Bahamas and read great reviews about Plein Sud. As suggested we made reservations for a table of 3. We very eagerly looked forward to having dinner with our son there. When we arrived at Plein Sud the middle aged man and woman behind the bar did not greet us right away and seemed in no rush to seat us. Did we look unfamiliar? Maybe. But we were treated very nonchalantly and neither of the workers seemed the slightest bit interested in hearing about our reservation. It was very awkward. My husband and I discussed whether or not to leave quietly but we decided to stay and give this place a chance. We ordered and the food was unimpressive, portions were on the small side and lacking in flavor. The middle aged woman was the most offensive; forgetting to bring forks for our meal and acting flustered , hard of hearing and too busy. We didn’t complain, we just put it down to the fact that this couple must be used to only hosting locals in their establishment, so when tourists walk in it surprises and annoys them. We left Plein Sud confused and offended by this couple’s behavior. If we didn’t know better we would think they were predjudiced against those that don’t resemble their regular clientele. We will NEVER recommend Plein Sud to anyone! TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE.
Dined here alone on a weekday night when I was in Montreal. I really liked that I was seated right next to the open window so I had opportunity to people watch while I enjoyed my meal. Owner was friendly and welcoming, and restaurant was generally quiet with romantic ambiance.
This is a classic French restaurant with traditional dishes done extremely well in a casual, comfortable space.
There is also a pasta of the day which is always well conceived.
There were 6 of us,who ordered across the menu, from rare steak frites, to pork to pasta to tuna. They all came out perfectly.
Service was when needed, knowledgeable and competent. The wine list is modest but thoughtful. Those who had dessert were very pleased. The cappuccino was good.
This is definitely a place you come back to, even with all the choices you have in Montreal.

Plein Sud proved to live up to its reputation. The menu was interesting and offered something for everyone with many unique French cuisine options. The food was superb, thoughtfully prepared and very well presented. And most importantly very tasty. The atmosphere of the restaurant was perfect, ideal for enjoying the cuisine and for conversation. Server was knowledgeable and obviously proud of his restaurant and its offerings.
Overall, we (a family of four, with two teenagers) had an exceptional experience at Plein Sud and we will return the next time we are in Montreal.
The menu was a bit different from online menu. Heavy dish selections for summer dining, but this seemed to be true of other restaurants we visited on this trip. The restaurant ambiance is lacking so we sat outside where we prayed a bus wouldn't swerve into us. However the food and service was very good. Recommend the linguine with coppa, corsican veal with gnocchi and steak frites
We recently enjoyed two dinners at Plein Sud and hope to return before we leave Montreal. The food was authentic and excellent, the environment relaxed and friendly, and there was a pleasantly eclectic group of diners.
Highly recommended for a lovely dinner at a local neighborhood bistro.
It was a good experience to eat in this cosy restaurant. I searched it through Internet and it had a good rating. It turned out the comments are right. The food was exquisite and the service was good. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a gem in this neighbourhood.
There were seven of us at the table and everyone loved their starter and their main course. They were out of hte wine that my partner and I selected for dinner but they recommended another that was in the same price range and that went very well with our meal. Everyone had a great time and we were seated in a separate room with another group of roughly the same size, which means that we could be a bit louder without worrying about disturbing couples or smaller groups. I recommend this restaurant to everyone
We liked the fact that the menu (albeit quite limited) had some interesting Corsican options. For those who prefer safer food, there was not a chicken option which was a bit odd. I had the fish special which was cod and it was nicely done but cool as I assume they had to wait for the other meals to be ready - this detracted from the meal. The Napoleon and his nuts dessert was loved by all but the profiteroles tasted a bit freezer burnt? Service was very nice although a bit slow. The restaurant was full and the noise level very hard so you don't come here for a nice conversation! A bit out of the way but a nice option.
I had come across this restaurant many times in reviews but I had never been to Plein Sud. Being from South of France myself, I really love the type of cuisine that this restaurant offers.
The food is great, everyone loved what they ordered (Pizza Corse, Sauté de Veau, Jarret d'Agneau...).
I liked the fact that they had a rosé wine from France and not the horrible Gallo Zinfandel that every other restaurant offers as the only option for rosé.
The ambiance is intimate with dim lights, it does get a bit noisy sometimes though. The service is perfect, they never disturb you but they are here when you need them. Our waiter was very nice.
The price is not too high even if you're having the 3-courses table d'hôte - it's pretty rare to find a restaurant with good food at a reasonable price.
One of my best dining experiences in Montreal.
