We had a great server and our food was really good.
This just might be the best pizza in San Antonio!! Kind of bummer to get to this slightly weird place tho. Finding parking was a bummer but maybe/probably we don't know the right place to look. Table was ready for us which is always nice. The inside vibe was a little weird to everyone in our party. Too stark? Disconnected theme? Sterile but amusement park but sports on the TV, everything shiny. Drinks were creative and tasty. Everyone gave the onion rings/bbq sauce and pimento cheese poppers an enthusiastic thumbs up. The queso fundido didn't go over as well - weirdly lacked flavor or the gummy cheddar. We each ordered a pizza so we had a great selection. Pepperoni with jalapeños was spicy but not too. Cremini a River was super tasty. Pulled pork was really good and that sauce is excellent. The Queen was super well balanced but a wee salty. The crust is the SUPERSTAR! I'd say you could put anything on that crust and it would be delicious but that wasn't true about the brie and pear pizza. We took leftovers of all but that one. No one liked it. Is there dessert? Coffee to help sober up from The Hammer? No idea because the bill was delivered while we were still munching on the crusts. Pizzas are $15+ each so plan accordingly. We would definitely go back but hopefully for a table outside and now we know what to order again and to pass on. And I really need to figure out where to park!
Back again for enjoyable evening at this gem. Great pizza and appetizers are served. The staff is friendly and the service is good. We came around 6 pm Friday evening with reservations. That is probably a good idea on a Friday evening.
Great pizza, neat place, music a bit too loud and bizarre.
For the first time that I can recall, the pizza actually disappointed us. You’re known for consistency and quality and pizza slices that have integrity when you pick them up. This past Friday, both the Buried Pleasure and the S&M seemed undercooked (crust wise) which meant the toppings were sliding off the slice and staying in the pan.
Great location downtown San Antonio. Though they may have been hosting a happy hour, the restaurant was extremely noisy. The beer battered fired mushrooms weren’t very good as the batter was way to heavy. The loaded tater tots were yummy. Pizza was a thin crust with fresh ingredients, and very tasty.
Nice evening on Saturday night (03/09/19) so we sat outside. Our waitress came over after a short time and overall, seemed as though she would have preferred to be anywhere also but here. We got our appetizers and had to ask her to bring silverware, napkins and plates. The food was very good from the appetizers to the salad, to the two different pizzas we ordered. Twice we had to look around and ask for her to come back to table to refill my iced tea. Again had to ask another of the wait staff to find her to order a bar drink for my wife. And lastly had to ask for her to come and bring our check. The service was just not good. We would definitely go back because the food was really so good but I would not want this young lady to wait on us.
Great food and drinks. Casual dining.
Pizza was out of this world!!! The sour dough crust was unbelievable! We also had Char Siu Cauliflower as an appetizer.....fantastic!!
Loved the service!
Arrived exactly at the reservation time of 6:15 on Valentine’s Day and were seated immediately.... right next to another couple even though on that row of seating of 16 chairs in the row they were the only other people there. Very uncomfortable.
As far as food, we had onion rings for an appetizer which were decent, good texture but the flavor was unusual and not bad but not great. The pizza was not good at all 😤. It was a semi thin crust pizza with pepperoni and mushrooms . First we were served a pizza with the toppings we had ordered but no cheese. We just thought that there was very little cheese an as we were eating the first slice, the server, helpfully came by with drinks and noticed the pizza was wrong and took it back to bring the correct one. Both were very soggy and limp in the middle so that you had to eat with a knife and fork. Which was almost impossible to cut with the butter knife provided. Later both of us had upset stomachs, so overall not a great experience. Not recommended
Food was absolutely fantastic! Best pizza in the area! Location close to so many attractions. We'll definitely be going there again soon!
My kids and I went to Playland for Valentine’s Day. Our server was polite and attentive! The flatbread appetizer was really good, and the pizza was nice too. When I got a dipping sauce that was strange, he apologized and took it off of the bill without me even having to ask. It was great! We loved the ambience and the people watching was good too.
The best part was when some kind couple picked up our bill - I was so touched. They left a note saying what a great mom I seemed to be and wished us a Happy Valentines Day. As a newly single mom, it made a sad day bright. ❤️
Food was excellent. Service was good. Music was a little loud for my taste. We ordered the bruiser pizza and tomato salad both were amazing.
Best pizza crust in San Antonio. I have eaten pizza all over the world and at all the places in San Antonio considered to be outstanding. The sour dough crust has a great texture with that fine balance between chewy but with a little crunch. We had sausage and mushroom. Good sausage with the right amount of fennel. The mushrooms were flavorful and obviously cooked on site. Simple fresh tasting sauce.
Salad a little small for the price. Figured it would be a shareable size. Flavor of the tomato feta salad was good.
Sorry but we needed to keep walking over to find our server to fulfill requests that we made, including the delivery of a 2nd pizza, and drinks we had ordered. Things were late or seemingly forgotten. I'm not sure that I would go back to this restaurant.
2nd time here and once again this place was amazing, great ambiance, food & staff!! I love the colors and decor so beautiful
This was my first time eating at Playland. Came across it looking for somewhere new to go for quick drinks and bite to eat before a show at the Majestic. Only had an hour, place was moderately busy but we had enough time to get in and out with drinks, salad, app, and pizza with time to spare. Gabriella was very nice and attentive, and understanding that we had a show to go to and were on a bit of a time crunch. Food tasted fresh and amazing. Not a big fan of blue cheese dressing but their chopped romaine salad was very good. The queso fundido was a little smaller than I had hoped for but still delicious. And the JP pizza that contained jalapenos was extremely hot and spicy, but I'm not good with spicy so that was my bad -still a good pizza. The bread was amazing. Interior was very interesting and lively. Boyfriend said it felt like a cool bar that served good pizza. Overall it was a good first experience. Glad I chose this over a different place near the Majestic.
Unique starters and the best pizza in SA.
Fried green tomatoes are a must try. Pizza was outstanding!
Great pizza, cauliflower was delicious. Very modern, definitely going back.
The pizza oven delivered! The ambiance and decor is outstanding. A great place for every event. Cheers!
Pretty good, average service
I thought that the food was good. The service was just okay. I ordered a second beer and when it didn’t come I had to cancel it. I paid my tab and left. The service was lacking in my opinion. I will not be coming back anytime soon.
Wanted a place to eat before going to see Phantom of the Opera. Did not plan ahead so was unable to make reservation at most of the fancy places near by. Started searching with Google Maps to find a place. At first the name Playland put me off until I went to the website.
Playland is a modern very clean pizzeria two blocks from the Majestic Theater. It has large windows on a corner if you like people watching and the lighted horse carriages go by. Easy access from the river walk.
Hubby and I ordered the JP pizza. Our pizza had a thin crispy sourdough crust with a mild sourdough flavor. The choice of drinks were great. Service was wonderful. There when you needed it but not intrusive. One pizza was enough for both of us. I would recommend the hard spiced cider. It was very good.
The menu is simple with excellent choices of ways to have pizza. We did not have any appetizers or dessert. We did not go away hungry but we are also an older couple. A younger couple might want to order two pizzas especially if they can take leftovers home.
We ate here before a night at the Tobin Center, only a short 4 block walk to the theater. Inside was very contemporary and nice, enjoyed the art and modern feel. Food was very good, but we've had better pizza and the queso was not exactly what we were wanting. The wings were delicious and big. The alcohol list was large for a place of this size, that was a definite plus. We may return with friends.
Easy access in for a nice dinner date. Best brick oven pizza & wings in town! Their wine list is great and priced right. Service was amazing and the ambiance is comfortable & warming.
The vibe and locale is great. The menu is a bit basic for such a hot spot.
Great experience! Monthly lunch with friends we choose Playland because of recommendations from others and we're not disappointed. Friendly and attentive waitstaff, delicious, creative food. We had jalapeno poppers for appetizers and two different pizzas they all were delicious. Full bar and drink specials. I highly recommend PLAYLAND.
My friends and I went to Playland before a show at the Majestic on Tuesday night. We arrived at 6:00 and were seated right away- we had reservations, but it wasn’t too busy at that time- and we were checked out by 6:50. In that time we tried the fried green tomatoes (fresh tasting) and the cream cheese jalapeño poppers (lots of cheese with a jalapeño kick, but not very much actual pepper), and two pizzas. I found the breading a little salty for my tastes, but they were fresh from the fryer and good.
We also tried two of the pizzas: the Sweet Jane and the Second Glance. I loved the Second Glance. All of the ingredients worked well together! The Sweet Jane was a miss for me, but was the preferred pizza by another group member. The sourdough crust was amazing.
Our server was excellent. She was attentive the entire time we were there and she was friendly. My only wish is that the music was just a little softer. It was hard to hear anyone at the table over it, even when they were sitting right next to me.
Overall it was a nice experience and I want to return to try some of the other pizzas.
My friends and I went there for happy hour. The pizza specials were good and the pizza slices were good as well. I recommend trying this place out.
Finding parking is a problem . Otherwise food was great and service was excellent.
This was recommended by our Lyft driver as really good pizza. The sourdough crust was tasty but undercooked. The pie choices were limited and because we asked for meat on the "plain" pie, we were charged extra event though that same meat came standard on other pies for the same base price. Wings were spicier than advertised and the ranch dip (which cost extra and not included with the wings) was homemade but not very good. Service was adequate. Weird combo of music (80s hits) with a modern/punk vibe in the decor. Server not familiar with beer selection. Sauce and cheese on pie were fresh and plentiful.
The food was very disappointing. I was there with a group of 5 people. For appetizers, we ordered the General Tso's chicken wings, the char siu cauliflower, and the jerked shishitos. The chicken wings were undercooked (not to the point of danger, but the skin was still soft and rubbery), the cauliflower's sauce was incredibly salty (while the cauliflower itself seemed to have no seasoning), and the shishitos were very underseasoned. We also ordered three pizzas: the Bruiser, the S&M, and the Not Pizza. The crust on all three was bland and did not achieve the chewy texture one expects from a well-made pizza. But the toppings on the first two were pretty good. The third, the Not Pizza, was absolutely awful - it was overloaded with bland, wet yogurt and apricot pastes that everyone at the table agreed resembled baby food. The cocktails were pretty good. The decor was great. We just expected a lot more from the food at that price point.
Although the pizza was very good the rest of the menu is odd. Wings? Wings don't feel very hip and chic and the finish out of Playland is very hip and chic. Great looking bar. Wonderful outside seating which makes for GREAT people watching. Close to the Majestic so perfect for pre/post food/drink. Our waiter was nice but overall lacked training. I realize after 2 months they still may be in start up mode but it's hard to make a good impression when you probably won't go back again. We also had the pimiento cheese balls. Flavorful but still cold in the middle. I hope they figure things out. So, if you go enjoy the drinks and stick with the pizza.
Birthday before a Wicked show!
The best pizza in San Antonio hands down. Great restaurant. Beautiful setting. Amazing service. It’s our new favorite place.
Our waiter, Luis, was extremely nice and knowledgeable on the menu and recommendations. Cocktails were fantastic!!
A great date night location, we were seated by the windows and were able to see the night time traffic and night life.
