Unique starters and the best pizza in SA.
Fried green tomatoes are a must try. Pizza was outstanding!
Great pizza, cauliflower was delicious. Very modern, definitely going back.
The pizza oven delivered! The ambiance and decor is outstanding. A great place for every event. Cheers!
Pretty good, average service
I thought that the food was good. The service was just okay. I ordered a second beer and when it didn’t come I had to cancel it. I paid my tab and left. The service was lacking in my opinion. I will not be coming back anytime soon.
Wanted a place to eat before going to see Phantom of the Opera. Did not plan ahead so was unable to make reservation at most of the fancy places near by. Started searching with Google Maps to find a place. At first the name Playland put me off until I went to the website.
Playland is a modern very clean pizzeria two blocks from the Majestic Theater. It has large windows on a corner if you like people watching and the lighted horse carriages go by. Easy access from the river walk.
Hubby and I ordered the JP pizza. Our pizza had a thin crispy sourdough crust with a mild sourdough flavor. The choice of drinks were great. Service was wonderful. There when you needed it but not intrusive. One pizza was enough for both of us. I would recommend the hard spiced cider. It was very good.
The menu is simple with excellent choices of ways to have pizza. We did not have any appetizers or dessert. We did not go away hungry but we are also an older couple. A younger couple might want to order two pizzas especially if they can take leftovers home.
We ate here before a night at the Tobin Center, only a short 4 block walk to the theater. Inside was very contemporary and nice, enjoyed the art and modern feel. Food was very good, but we've had better pizza and the queso was not exactly what we were wanting. The wings were delicious and big. The alcohol list was large for a place of this size, that was a definite plus. We may return with friends.
Easy access in for a nice dinner date. Best brick oven pizza & wings in town! Their wine list is great and priced right. Service was amazing and the ambiance is comfortable & warming.
The vibe and locale is great. The menu is a bit basic for such a hot spot.
Great experience! Monthly lunch with friends we choose Playland because of recommendations from others and we're not disappointed. Friendly and attentive waitstaff, delicious, creative food. We had jalapeno poppers for appetizers and two different pizzas they all were delicious. Full bar and drink specials. I highly recommend PLAYLAND.
My friends and I went to Playland before a show at the Majestic on Tuesday night. We arrived at 6:00 and were seated right away- we had reservations, but it wasn’t too busy at that time- and we were checked out by 6:50. In that time we tried the fried green tomatoes (fresh tasting) and the cream cheese jalapeño poppers (lots of cheese with a jalapeño kick, but not very much actual pepper), and two pizzas. I found the breading a little salty for my tastes, but they were fresh from the fryer and good.
We also tried two of the pizzas: the Sweet Jane and the Second Glance. I loved the Second Glance. All of the ingredients worked well together! The Sweet Jane was a miss for me, but was the preferred pizza by another group member. The sourdough crust was amazing.
Our server was excellent. She was attentive the entire time we were there and she was friendly. My only wish is that the music was just a little softer. It was hard to hear anyone at the table over it, even when they were sitting right next to me.
Overall it was a nice experience and I want to return to try some of the other pizzas.
My friends and I went there for happy hour. The pizza specials were good and the pizza slices were good as well. I recommend trying this place out.
Finding parking is a problem . Otherwise food was great and service was excellent.
This was recommended by our Lyft driver as really good pizza. The sourdough crust was tasty but undercooked. The pie choices were limited and because we asked for meat on the "plain" pie, we were charged extra event though that same meat came standard on other pies for the same base price. Wings were spicier than advertised and the ranch dip (which cost extra and not included with the wings) was homemade but not very good. Service was adequate. Weird combo of music (80s hits) with a modern/punk vibe in the decor. Server not familiar with beer selection. Sauce and cheese on pie were fresh and plentiful.
The food was very disappointing. I was there with a group of 5 people. For appetizers, we ordered the General Tso's chicken wings, the char siu cauliflower, and the jerked shishitos. The chicken wings were undercooked (not to the point of danger, but the skin was still soft and rubbery), the cauliflower's sauce was incredibly salty (while the cauliflower itself seemed to have no seasoning), and the shishitos were very underseasoned. We also ordered three pizzas: the Bruiser, the S&M, and the Not Pizza. The crust on all three was bland and did not achieve the chewy texture one expects from a well-made pizza. But the toppings on the first two were pretty good. The third, the Not Pizza, was absolutely awful - it was overloaded with bland, wet yogurt and apricot pastes that everyone at the table agreed resembled baby food. The cocktails were pretty good. The decor was great. We just expected a lot more from the food at that price point.
Although the pizza was very good the rest of the menu is odd. Wings? Wings don't feel very hip and chic and the finish out of Playland is very hip and chic. Great looking bar. Wonderful outside seating which makes for GREAT people watching. Close to the Majestic so perfect for pre/post food/drink. Our waiter was nice but overall lacked training. I realize after 2 months they still may be in start up mode but it's hard to make a good impression when you probably won't go back again. We also had the pimiento cheese balls. Flavorful but still cold in the middle. I hope they figure things out. So, if you go enjoy the drinks and stick with the pizza.
Birthday before a Wicked show!
The best pizza in San Antonio hands down. Great restaurant. Beautiful setting. Amazing service. It’s our new favorite place.
Our waiter, Luis, was extremely nice and knowledgeable on the menu and recommendations. Cocktails were fantastic!!
A great date night location, we were seated by the windows and were able to see the night time traffic and night life.
Sourdough crust was good, baked to a crisp that help up to sauce and toppings. Two of our pizzas were good but the one we had with Brie and eggplant tasted off. Drinks were good and service was helpful but I rated a three because the music was too loud in the concrete walled dining room where we had to yell to be heard by the server.
Came to Playland with a group of 6 on a Tuesday evening. When we arrived, the restaurant was pretty empty! We ordered drinks and food and settled in. The drinks were great & pretty boozy; I had the Ghost Train -- very margarita-esque with a little kick.
One of the women's orders came out within a few minutes, we were pleasantly surprised thinking that the rest of our orders were close behind. Unfortunately, we ended up waiting close to 40 minutes for 4 pizzas. In that time we were given two free pizzas which was nice!
The food was really good and the drinks were great. Our waitress was sweet and apologetic for the wait. By the time we left the place was packed!
Playland is fantastic! Pizza, salad, wings, and creative dishes like fried okra with cornmeal and more are worth the trip.
My new fave! Delish and witty food! New comfort food!
Very attractive restaurant and very close to RiverWalk. Our total bill ($80 including tip for 5, no alcohol) was pretty high given we got 18 pieces of not that great pizza and a small appetizer (6 pieces of bread in a tasty dip). Not impressed.
The atmosphere is pretty fresh and modern. The service was okay for a Friday evening but the longest wait for the food, approx. 40 mins for our pizzas from the time we ordered. The pizza was decent but majority of our crusts were burnt.
Decor is remarkable with an original Playland bumper car!
Yes! Fresh ingredients for my pizza! I would certainly return to the place with friends! Of course, the pros are it being fresh and hopefully organic. The cons: Is the parking! If your going downtown, park and spend the day instead of just going out for dinner! Also, I wish there was a way that the pizza would not be burnt on any part! That might be impossible but just a thought!
Give this plac a try! It’s worth your time!
The food was the highlight. Don’t skip on the Playland section of pizzas!
It was a really fun time! Beautiful Decor, friendly & attentive staff, & really great food!
Gorgeous, bright, whimsically decorated interior (even the mammoth pizza oven is beautiful...it literally shines!). We dined on Playland's fourth day of business and our server hadn't quite mastered his knowledge of the menu with regards to making recommendations or suggestions (he admitted to only having tasted one of the pizzas so he couldn't really help with describing flavor profiles, spice levels, etc....). He was quite vague on his decripton of the Hungarian liptauer spread appetizer but we rolled the dice and ordered it, which was, thankfully, a winning gamble! Creamy, slightly sweet/salty/smokey combination of flavors (what pimento cheese wants to be when it grows up and moves to Europe1) served with a generous portion of flatbread (pizza dough!), I highly recommend this starter. We chose two pizzas, the Bruiser and the King was Chill. Our server led us towards the Bruiser for a spicy-but-not-overly-mouth-burning choice but instead of a nice punch of heat, the Bruiser only delivered a most subtle, gentle love tap. The copa was more salt than spice and while th pizza had a nicely charred end crust, the middle was undercooked and flimsy which resulted in topping sliding off when we attempted to eat a slice. I was mostly excited to try the King was Chill and I enjoyed the romesco/cauliflower/garlic/cheese combination but I think the pizza would benefit from the vegetable's florets being slightly charred and carmelized (the cauliflower seemed to be simply blanched and not given any love before being put on the pizza). The liptauer cheese added a nice boost of delish to this pizza when spread onto the crust. Our server was efficient with drink refills, checking in on us,etc..and our food came out in a timely manner. We look forward to a return visit to try some of the other unique pizza offerings (and of course, to enjoy more of the liptauer spread) AND hopefully they will have some dessert options available soon!
I was highly impressed by the buffalo sauce on the wings. Most places don't get it right but Playland might be holding out on secrets towards the best sauce in town. They also made me realize that tri-tip is the superior pizza topping. The greatest fun out of this imposing restaurant is the display kitchen, which shows the care and passion through the eyes of each chef. In short time, they will become the unstoppable force and continue with great success. Special thanks to the management and staff for allowing me to take photos.
sooooo fun - can't wait to come back. Parking a little challenging but worth the walk
Playland is so beautifully decorated and the food was fantastic!
While the food was good, the service was pretty bad .... our server forgot to put in our pizza and then walked out on her shift and all tables midway. Even after all that, our pizza still had not been put in. It took a while for the GM/Manager to see us .... and he didn't even comp/discount ANY of our food, even though we were there over 2 hours. I would wait few months to visit so they can get better organized and improve their service quality.
The way I break Down my rating is In 3 parts
1. The environment - 10
2. The over all taste and food quality- 4
3. Service- 10
I was there on my anniversary dinner and honestly the quality of the food is what made my experience a not so great one. The wings tasted like they had a lot of salt. We waited forever for the pizza and when we got it presentation was awesome. However the whole bottom was burned. We did not want to complain because at this point we didn’t want to wait anymore, but I was upset and dissatisfied. If the owner or manager is reading this it would be great if they made it up to us.
OMG, a crust that dreams are made of! Classic and creative pies, killer veggies and a great salad. Even the fry guy is killin' it with the wings. What a fantastic addition to Houston Street - making downtown San Antonio more vibrant again. This is going to be a regular lunch stop and fun dinner place. Hooray!
Everything was so good! General Tso's wings were awesome! The fried okra was very well breaded, and not slimy when fried as it can get when not done right and the homemade dipping sauce. The drinks, good, atmosphere; great experience I cant wait to share with friends again.
