The staff at Pilar is the best thing that they have going for them. The food was nothing to get excited about and not very authentic. We started with caldo gallego which arrived to the table cold. My daughter ordered a vegetarian dish and the portion was really a tasting /snack size. The rest of our food did not arrive any hotter than the soup. We ordered a shrimp and steak dinner and they were just okay. Finally, the drinks needed to be sent back bc a very important ingredient was left out. It’s a cute place best for a coffee and dessert or maybe wine and beer with friends. I’m not in any rush to go back.
I have been here before but this time, all four members of our party thought the food was minimal and the price was high. The portions were extremely small for the appetizers. It also took a long time for us to get the check. I really like this place and I will go back. Hopefully they will do a better job with portion sizes.
We had fabulous appetizers and dinner. And we highly recommend the red sangria and end your dinner with the flan. Service was great!
Really enjoy the creative cooking.
Good is very good. However, the venue is very drafty in the winter. The only way to warm up is to drink and wear layers.
Pilar offers delicious, authentic Cuban food and tasty cocktails. My ropa vieja brought back the memories of my trip to Cuba :) cocktail with guava and ginger-lemon was refreshing and matched perfectly with the ambience :) would definitely recommend to anyone looking for Cuban cuisine in New York :)
The food was great , excellent service and the drinks super B
Lovely experience! Delicious, flavorful food, nice atmosphere, and every staff member we interacted with was lovely. Already planning to bring family when they're here visiting from out of town. A great evening.
Always great food and impeccable service. Thank you for making my friend’s birthday brunch amazing!
Birthday but nothing special was done by our server
SUNDAY BRUNCH WAS NOISY AND OVERCROWDED. WE HAD TO SHOUT JUST TO HEAR OUR TABLE COMPANIONS. THE FOOD WAS OK BUT NOTHING SPECIAL. ALSO, NO ACCESS FOR WHEELCHAIRS AS ADVERTISED.
Because of the bad service I would not go back. I am a foodie and go out to many restaurants. The service here did not impress me.
1)The waitress seems so stressed out the moment we walked in.
2) drinks took 15-20 min to come in when restaurant wasn’t even full. There was only 1 bartender
3) did not check in to see if everything was ok
4) once we finished they cleaned up our table and did not offer dessert menu. We had to ask for a menu after 10 min waiting to get attended.
5) the “gauva cheese cake”is misleading and had way too much gauva. It over powers the cheese cake flavor. I thought this out be an actual cheeks cake with gauva on top. Instead it was more of a guava cheese pie. The layer of cheese was too thin for the amount of gauva it had.
The appetizer and entree was good. Only thing I was expecting just a little more rice for the amount of pork and beans served. I had to order another portion of rice.
Food and drinks are always amazing. Def recommend a reservation.
Empanadas were AMAZING! The entrees were great as well. Just moved to the neighborhood and I think I just found my new favorite dinner spot!
My husband and I come to this restaurant as we enjoy the "VACA FRITA" which is delicious if you are a steak lover. The environment is very nice and usually busy so a little advice to use open table to make a reservation.
Absolutely delicious food + prompt service! Have the torrejas. Surprised at how affordable the brunch is. Will definitely be back!!
Definitely authentic! Loved the vibe. Highly recommend if you're looking for a date night spot or dinner with a friend!
Food and drinks were good. We ordered the stuffed tostones for appetizer, pernil and seafood for entrees. Portions were just right and the food flavorful. Be sure to try their passion fruit mango mojito.
The food is consistently excellent, as is the service. The setting is warm, friendly, welcoming with a touch of Cuba in the air and on the walls...definitely recommend to friends....
the hostess may want to think about getting a job at a chain restaurant, you know, the kind that hands you one of those flashing devices that lets you know when your table is ready. we made a reservation on a slow Sunday night, preferring the outdoor seating. she barely let me finish my speaking, 'is your party here', 'no, my friend is 1 block away' 'we can't seat you until your party is here', 'yes, let me call her' I barely had the words out of my mouth as she tripped over me to ask the couple behind me if they would like to sit outside, at the table I had hoped we'd sit at. my friend arrived moments later. yes, we were seated outside, but not at the more desirable table. we got the wonky, uneven table along the windows as opposed to the breezier table along the sidewalk. it's really no big deal but for this: this is a local, neighborhood place. she certainly did not make us feel welcome. like I said, she may want to look into a place like, say, Applebees, that more suits her terrible service / manner.
I love this place. Food is amazing! We sat outside on a gorgeous evening.
Amazing, as always! My brother loves this place, so when he comes to visit Brooklyn from Boston, he is always requesting Pilar. This past weekend didn't disappoint!
Such a great staff and amazing food, might go back tomorrow.
Food was authentic - the adjacent bakery, by the same name, was excellent.
Great sangria (white and sidre), authentic and delicious empanadas (chicken and spinach) with nice flaky pastry, and super good cubano sandwich: very luscious with the melty cheese! Also, the half chicken had great seasoning and a legit crispy skin. The accompanying maduros were on point too!
The food is refreshing and great. Some of the best Cuban food I've had.
The best Cuban sandwich I have had in my entire life!
Excellent food, casual atmosphete
Beautifully designed space with great Cuban food. The cod croquettes are killer , the traditional cuban sandwich is fantastic and the Caldo Gallego is not to be missed. Great bar with excellent cocktail list - perfect for meeting friends. A great brunch spot to bring your parents.
Menu was limited, food was horrible and service was not good.
Food was subpar, the restaurant rushes people out which was exhibited by a rude comment from the waitress. Would never eat there again. Waste of money.
The food was amazing and the service matched it. Definitely, going back
They have their own bakery too
They make killed food, and now that they have a complete bar, it's a one stop destination.
We had an appetizer and 3 entrees and all were very good. We will be going again.
I have been eating here for over 5 years and up until recently my experience was amazing. The last 2 times I was there the service was great, however, the manager, Sylvie, was horrible so that puts the service in jeopardy.
She was very nasty in tone and short in response. We arrived and were waiting for an additional person to arrive. She nastily told us we had to wait to be seated, which I understand. But tone and demeanor is everything.
When I tried to engage her in friendly conversation she rolled her eyes and quickly moved away. She seemed very overwhelmed and had absolutely no people skills. She just seemed so out if place for this former wonderful place with a wonderful environment. She made several other patrons look at her like she was going through a meltdown as she frantically cleared tables, threw down silverware and seemed to bark at the staff.
The time before the last time, I had invited a couple friends to introduce them to what I called an amazing place. She was so rude that they both said they will never come back and questioned what I found wonderful about it.
I really want this place to continue to thrive and offer value to the neighborhood. However I have spoken to other friends who have gone and all have had a similar experience with her. Another one said he is not going back because of her.
I hate writing bad reviews but this can not go unnoticed and undocumented. The sad part is that you are as weak as your weakest link. I hope the owner realizes that she is pushing people away and does something about it.
EVERYTHING else is wonderful. The food is amazing. The drinks are artistic. The atmosphere is inviting. She is the sore thumb!
Nice place, good food, good vibes! Perfect place in BK for good Cuban food!
Great happy hour drink menu and delicious food!
Everything was delicious and memorable, and the staff was really incredible. Our only gripe was that, at least to us, the wine and beer list seem a little overpriced— one relatively small drink each added $25 to our check, which seems considerable. We look forward to going back.
This little restaurant tucked away on the edge of Bedstuy has come a long way from the hidden gem it once was. The food is always solid, particularly the ropa vieja and pressed cubanos. The yuca fries were just ok, but the sweet plantains were delicious. Skip the churros. It's quite loud on the weekends, so be prepared for that. They really dim down the lighting as well, making it feel more like an upscale caribbean bar with restaurant seating. In any case, the two main downsides to our dining experience were 1) making a reservation and 2) price for value. I had booked a table for 4 at 8 pm on a Saturday a few days before our dinner and received a frantic voicemail claiming their system had made a mistake by allowing us to book a table because they were, in fact, fully booked. We should show up at 8:30 and expect a short wait, urged the disembodied voice. Fine, no problem. About 30 minutes later I get a new message from the same person saying they've had a cancellation and asked that we show up on time, or else we'll be placed on a waitlist. And they don't seat incomplete parties. Well now that's just rude. I understand the hipocrisy to a certain extent; there's nothing special about Pilar's reservation policy. But they need learn to manage guest's expectations and either update their system so that OpenTable reflects the real availability according to their floor plan , or stick to walk-ins. Blaming the technology when in fact it's user error ain't fooling anyone. Finally, Pilar is on the expensive side for what they offer (read $16 for a pulled pork sandwich), and maybe it would be a better value proposition if it didn't take the kitchen 45 minutes to bring out the food. After writing this review I realize it comes across as slightly negative, but I promise we had a great time. In fact we barely noticed the wait, but I'm including that information for the benefit of others.
PROS: food, ambience, attentive waitstaff
CONS: reservations, price, slow kitchen service
Best Cuban meal we have had in a long time! Empanadas, Croquetas, Cuban Sandwiches (we went for lunch) served with their homemade cilantro lime sauce and hot sauce (they sell it) - OUT OF THIS WORLD!!! AND, you must visit their new bakery (it just opened 4 days prior to our visit). Pastelitos, Tres Leches, and their Dulce de Leche brownie, TO DIE FOR! Congrats Ricky and Liz!!! You have kept our Cuban tradition alive!!!
