About Pietro's Coal Oven Pizza - Walnut Street

Pizza is a family affair for me. My Uncle Angelo arrived in America in the 1930s with a passion for pizza. He worked hard and eventually bought his own pizzeria in Brooklyn. It was there that Uncle Angelo invented a recipe for coal oven pizza. That recipe has been perfected over 60 years and passed down through the generations.

My brothers and cousins in New York know the recipe. Diners at Patsy's, Nick's and Angelo's have enjoyed their pizzas, pastas and salads for years. Here in Philadelphia and New Jersey, you can feast on my Uncle Angelo's secret recipe dishes at our three Pietro's locations: 1714 Walnut Street and 121 South Street in Philadelphia. I hope that you enjoy our classic style pizzas and pasta specialties "alla familia" for many years to come. Buon appetito

The first thing my wife and I noticed as we were led to our table upstairs, was the high noise level! We used to visit every few months but gave up, probably a year ago because of the high noise level.

I happen to be in the noise control business, so I’m more aware of it. I immediately noticed the introduction of the sound absorption panels on the ceiling. Although our waitress told us they did make some improvement, it wasn’t enough of a reduction to make a notable impression on us!

My question is: Did someone calculate the square footage of the sabins of absorption required to adequately or more specifically, to make a notable reduction in the ambient noise level?

We both agreed that the food and service warrant another visit. We still wish the noise level was reduced to the point where we could hold a conversation without having to raise our voices to be understood while sitting just across a two-top table!

Pietro's is an excellent Italian restaurant in the Rittenhouse Square neighborhood in Center City. The restaurant has always served delicious, traditional Italian food on a consistent basis. The portions are large (enough to take home left overs) and the prices are very reasonable. There are a variety of pizzas, enough to satisfy everyone's palate. The same can be said of the salads, main courses (pasta, chicken, veal, and seafood). Reservations are recommended as the restaurant fills up quickly - especially on a Saturday night. (Best to book in advance and choose an earlier time slot). With the large number of customers, the noise level rises. It can be difficult to have a conversation others when the restaurant is extremely busy. The noise level is the only drawback for this very fine restaurant. The servers are amazing - hard working, cheerful, efficient, and professional at all times. A little bit of patience with the servers is recommended during busy hours, considering the number of patrons in the restaurant. To summarize, for superior, classic Italian dishes (and pizza) for a very reasonable price, Pietro's is highly recommended.

The food was great. Service was very friendly, but a little "off." They left our salad on the table while we had the main course, and it was impossible to get fresh pepper. But the waiter was very friendly and helpful - maybe a little overworked.

Food was good. Portions plentiful. Bad service. We were there to celebrate a birthday. Asked our waitress to take a photo of the table, she said she couldn’t. Two of us ordered pasta dishes. The waitress forgot to bring out grated cheese, even after we reminded her.

This Italian restaurant is an excellent choice for those who crave real Italian food. But I must forewarn you, however, arrive at this restaurant with an appetite since the portion sizes for their dishes are large. Sharing of dishes is encouraged and recommended. I had the pasta bolognese and it was delicious. Others in my party had italian salads and they loved them as well...Service was excellent and attentive although I felt the pricing of the dishes was a bit on the high side. Overall great visit though with great Italian food to boot!

Ok. Good. Passable. Not great. The Sicilian Salad was the best part of the meal—very good! Homemade fettuccini was kind of doughy and stuck together too much Marinara sauce was a bit too sweet :( Eggplant Parmesan—huge portion!! Pretty good! Gemelli and Chicken dish was rather blah; not enough tomatoes. I don’t recommend the Tiramisu, unless you like lots of cream and minimal ladyfingers :(

We were looking for really good brick oven pizza, and we found it at this restaurant. Our waitress was polite and attentive. The noise level was very high though. When the large parties left, the noise level was more pleasurable. A later reservation would be wise if you want to avoid the high noise level. Also we like to sit in booths on our dates, and there are only tables. We'd still go back for a late dinner because the pizza was undeniably the best we've had in the area.

If a restaurant charges $26.50 for a pizza, a customer would be right to expect one great f'n pizza, right? Well that's not what we got. Pizza came out cold and the crust was chewy, The Pietro pie was also lacking in flavor.

So the pizza was cold.... Maybe it was waiting for the entrees so they would be hot. Wrong, Entrees of carbonara ( fresh pasta? Nope.if you want it fresh that'll cost you an extra 3 bucks), Chicken Parmesan, (cold with dry chicken), and mussels (luke warm and light on flavor), and a meat ball on the side, very good flavor but served at room temperature or maybe lower.

The service was also less then stellar. Slow on the water refills, a beer refill went 5 minutes before we could flag down and remind the waitress. And perhaps the worst of everything was the table behind me was too close and every staff member tried walking between us. Some took care. Most did not. I spent my entire meal either getting bumped or dodging another one

The food and service were very good. What was not good was the noise level and a family with 3 kids who were allowed to run all over the place yelling and screaming. The baby cried for at least 20 minutes and the parents sat there and did nothing. I think the restaurant personnel should have stepped in and asked the people to walk the child outside ( weather was nice) until it calmed down and told the other 2 kids to stop running around screaming. Just wanted to enjoy a nice dinner with friends after a long day.
If you can't control your children get a sitter!!

Being from Brooklyn NYC, am always weary about gettting pizza outside of my home town. This place was an awesome fine. Any time I can bite into a pizza and hear the crunch, am sold! My family and I will definitely come back. The salad is a good size, two can share one and the Pizza was yummy. Pepperoni was salty and thick cut but either way , yum yum yum! Enjoy.

Bad service. Cold mussels. Big salads. Very good pizza. Menu has lots of choices other than pizza. Problem was we had a 9 and 11 year old and we were promised thief pizza first, then mussels, then salads. Cold mussels served first. So fast we knew they had not been prepared for us. Then salads just minutes later. No food for children. So they ate rolls and had sugary drinks. Reheated mussels showed up about time pizza was served. With everything on table, there was not enough room to eat. It was a confused evening likely the result of poor service by our server.

Food was amazing (except for the bread they brought to the table. It was incredibly stale and hard.).
Our server left a LOT to be desired. He was visibly angry because we didn't order alcohol. He also had no use for our kids (9 and 12). He paid little attention to our table after taking our order.
We made reservations here because it was advertised as being family friendly. Hardly! (At least with our server).
