Restaurant was not busy when we were there. Waiter very kind, but service was sooo slow. It was Halfway through dinner when drinks were delivered- ordered when entrees delivered. Out of hamburger which they are known for- bar out of cranberry juice so cocktail was foiled. Tasty but Incredibly overpriced food. Had heard they had an overhaul with new chef however still lacking.
The food is great and fresh. The variety in the menu made choosing difficult. Our waiter made good suggestions for appetizer. The pate was excellent. The restaurant is very loud - even when not very crowded. But still a great choice for farm fresh dining.
Some of our dishes were excellent (mushroom ravioli). I had fish stew and it was poor- the shrimnp were sgreatly overcooked and the broth had very little flavor.
Way over priced
Food was not that great but the prices were comparable to other great restaurants we have been to
Outstanding food and service. The scallops that one in the party had were described as "superb".
We had the meat / cheese / pate starter, as above, the scallops and the mushroom ravioli.
Anniversary dinner and caught "restaurant week" - specials were great, and as my wife is on a diet they allowed her to swap out an appetizer for dessert (very nice considering it was already a prix fixe meal). REALLY good food, executed beautifully.
Food was over salted and nothing special for what we paid for. Upstairs space felt awkward compared to the main level. You can eat much better in Durham at this price point.
Food was wonderful! Wait staff, while very nice, seemed a bit confused
This was our first time dining at Piedmont Restaurant. We had tickets to attend a performance at the DPAC so the location was perfect. We were quite pleased with the service, ambiance and food. Would recommend.
Way over charged use for wine. Messed up order and requests. Told use they did not have a house wine. Never been to any place that didn't and they never told us.
Excellent, fresh, very flavorful. We shared our different appetizers, entrees, desserts and drinks (2 different sangrias). Each tasting was outstanding as was service.
High noise level limits conversation across tables.
Food is outstanding. I didn't go with a full excellent review because I had a local beer and a glass of wine, both of which were flat/over-aerated. I will definitely return though.
First outstanding dining experience in North Carolina! The food is amazing as well as the hand crafted cocktails. Our server was one of the best we’ve ever had! Unique, fresh, taste bud awakening, delicious, creative, food!
Rib starter was excellent, perfect level of spice but might be a little too spicy for some. The scallops were done perfectly. Was hoping to have the carrot cake for dessert (I had it a few months back and am still thinking about it) but it is currently not on the menu.
We arrived late for our dinner, but everyone at The Piedmont was terrific. Simeon was beyond superb with his service for our entire evening. The food was great. Would be more than happy to recommend The Piedmont for any dinner plans you may have. Will be back.
I wanted to stress how excellent the service was. The wait staff was wonderful. Friendly, energetic, and helpful. We really enjoyed dining there.
I have mixed feelings about Piedmont.
First, the flavors on the food were very good. We really enjoyed our appetizer of asparagus and our meals (roasted chicken and I got the scallops). My complaint was how small the portions were for the price.
Second, the service was subpar. I can’t eat dairy and repeated that several times and still, both our appetizer and my entree came out with cheese on them. Also, I asked to substitute the risotto because, well dairy, for a side salad. Our server was very nice but he couldn’t understand that I simply wanted a salad and not risotto. It was just a very awkward interaction for everyone.
Based on the food alone, flavor wise, we would go back. However they would need to adjust their prices to match the portions they’re serving.
Never disappoints. Great staff. Amazing service. Fresh and delicious food. Yummy drinks.
Dinner before DPAC show
I never write reviews and feel the need to say how amazing this restaurant is! The scallops were perfect, risotto amazing, carrots exceptional, burger was still steaming when it was brought to the table, and that banana pudding cheesecake was worth the drive the Durham!
First time here and was truly wowed. From the oysters, to the pork belly appetizers our first course was wonderful. The oysters fresh salty and briny. The pork belly melted in your mouth. Was deciding between two main dishes and the server said their pork chop was the best in town. He wasn’t kidding. Huge and fork tender, with a light glaze and cooked perfectly. My son had part of my pork chop and the mushroom ravioli in a cream sauce which was also excellent. We ended by splitting a piece of carrot cake which might be the best I’ve had. A definite do again.
Mother's Day was a blast. The wife and I enjoyed the limited menu. Great items but very limited. A bit pricey but worth it if you research the restaurant, chef, and direction of the establishment. Will be back for the full menu.
We had a great time for Mother's Day brunch! The restaurant didn't try to overextend itself like others that weekend (with Mother's Day and graduation, Durham was crazy!). Our server was polite and attentive and the food was delicious! The restaurant was calm, but lively - perfect for Sunday brunch! We also loved that they had a bunch of local beers on draught.
Seated upstairs when plenty of room downstairs. A/C was cranking cold even though it was barely 70 out and no need for A/C...they turned down for us - but, went back on 15 min later...others seated next to us had to put on scarves/sweaters as soon as they sat down.
Serving sizes for quiche could be larger...not sufficient for an adult.
Food was obviously pre-prepared and not Cooked fresh. The food came out 5 minutes after we ordered, and we had finished our Mother’s Day meal within 20 minutes of sitting down, which was awkward. It was obvious that the quiche was just thrown into a microwave for a minute. We understood that it was going to be a busy day for the restaurant with Mother’s Day as well as Graduation for Duke, but the food should have been prepared fresh and we expected more of an experience. It felt like the whole goal was to get us in and out quickly.
it was a terrible experience for a grad's night out, small portions, no bread available for our table, over priced wine we didn't choose and sloppy service in a crowded noisy hallway, very poor.Portions were all unequal and small and basically flavourless.
There are a lot of nice things to say about Piedmont. The room is open and airy. Our server was congenial. I had the beef tartare, the tilefish, and the limoncello-mousse cake. The food was good but the portions were very small. We were there on the Saturday of graduation weekend for Duke. They had a $55 fixed-price menu. If we had come on any other day, the 3 courses would have cost $40. After paying a $25 corkage fee, I felt the value was bad. The service was a bit too responsive. My husband and I were having a convivial conversation and kept being intruded upon.
Great food and service. It was a prix fixe menu because it was graduation weekend, but it was just as fabulous as always.
Wonderful farm to table ingredients but fish and meat overcooked, as well as fennel...disappointed.
Piedmont is hands down my favorite spot in Durham. Everything is made from scratch, locally sourced, and expertly prepared. Ian provided us with excellent service. Shaun and Amy provided excellent check ins and conversation, and the bartender (who remains nameless) was knowledgeable, fun to talk to, and provided innovative craft cocktails with a pretty decent selection of localish craft liquors. Try the pate, the duck breast, and the scallops. Whatever you get, you can’t go wrong.
This is our 2nd time eating here within past 2 months. Two in our party ordered the chicken dish. This consisted of one chicken leg and obviously something starchy which I don’t recall. The men who ordered this left hungry. Portion size was ridiculous for anyone especially for the price. My gf apologized to her husband b/c he was still hungry and didn’t like scallops which she offered him. So she and I ordered the scallops which were good but there was way too much going on under the scallops/ no veggies just a pasta/rice combo. Get an appetizer if you go or better yet, get two but expect a very high bill if you do. It seemed better the first time we went about a month ago. I would NOT recommend if you want a big meal or if you are on a budget. By the time you add cocktails or wine it’s an expensive evening and you will be needing a snack an hour or so later. In fact, we went to DPAC show after dinner and everyone was starved after the show!
Piedmont is my favorite high-end Durham restaurant. Great food--creative, healthy, delicious--great service, the best food politics. Students in a class I taught developed a system for rating the food politics of local restaurants: buys local wherever possible from small farms w good food politics (humane, environmental- and health-conscious); will take an item off the menu if they can't find an ingredient from a farm they've determined follows good labor and food practices. Piedmont got the highest rating. Very creative as well as healthy dishes, very nice people/atmosphere. My first choice for all special events.
Food was excellent. Very much worth it. Nice wine/drink list and not overly priced. Wish our server was a little more knowledgeable. Also wish they would have acknowledged that we were celebrating our 5 year wedding anniversary, which I put on the reservation. 😣
Great location and aesthetic, but the food was just so-so. We had great service, but our food and drinks arrived at the same time. We had pork belly and perogies that we’re almost flavorless. Overall, this is a restaurant we have considered on multiple occasions but haven’t been inspired by the menu. This was no different, but we were in the area. I doubt we would return, it was worth trying.
Oh my goodness this was incredible! Absolutely loved the food. The server was awesome and she was able to help us choose between a few dishes. Can’t wait to go back!
Piedmont is one of the best gems in Durham. Great food, great wine and great service!
Our table had the scallops and the soft-shelled crab. Both were excellent. Good-size portions and nicely prepared. We had the olive oil/vanilla layer cake and, despite the nae, was sweet, moist and delicious! The wait staff were very attentive and informative.
Unremarkable dining experience. Sad it wasn’t more interesting!
Food was delicious, but our server seemed not to know very much about the menu. Maybe he was new. The overall experience was good, but not up to the standard the prices would lead you to expect.
Rich and creamy carrot soup — very large serving, could easily be shared. Mushroom ravioli excellent though quite rich. Banana cheesecake beautifully presented and one of the best desserts I’ve ever eaten.
