Pican - Oakland - Permanently Closed Ratings and Reviews
Wasn't overly impressed with the beignets or the fried chicken but did like the mac and cheese, catfish and shrimp and grits. Additionally, they had a nice selection of wine despite they fact that they were out of the Cloudy Bay Saugvignon Blanc I was craving.
Pican understands customer service from the hostess to the servers and the owners. Very charming friendly people. The owner is always visable and engaging customers in conversation. The food is wonderful. The ribs, fried chicken, mac n cheese, fried green tomotoes, coleslaw, hush puppies and greens are fabulous! Everything we have tried in the 2 visits we have been there has been great.
Wow...speechless! There really wasn't one thing better then the other. It was 5 star quality all the way around. My GF and I went there for VDay and had reservations. Lady at the front said it was going to be a 5 min wait. It was more like 2 mins. Menu selection is wonderful. I wanted to get 1 of everything. Waitress was better then 5 stars. Food came out at the perfect time. The price of the food is worth every penny! Believe me, I'm not the richest person in the world.
Everything was spectacular! The service was warm, friendly, and efficient. Being Valentine's Day, they even gave the ladies each a long stem rose as they seated them at their tables. Wonderful touch! Our food was delicious, and the drinks were, as well. Wanted to try dessert, but we were so full from the wonderful meal, that we decided to not have dessert, and have that be our excuse to return very soon, to try the dessert and bourbon menu!
We went here for Valentine's Day and it was PERFECT! My wife and I are bourbon fans so we appreciated the clever and tasty bourbon cocktail menu. Dinner was hushpuppies, goat cheese beignets (best part of the meal), a 20 OZ steak for two with grilled potatoes and a pecan tart. Everything was amazing. Plus, the restaurant is very close to BART, so we will be going there again and again!
We had another great meal at Pican - you simply can't beat the fried chicken. The only disappointing aspect of the meal was the coffee one of us ordered at the table - $3.50 for a terrible cup of coffee - the espresso was much better.
No reason not to have a great coffee to offer folks at the end. Seems so easy.
We'll be back!
My wife and I are vegetarian and read a review that says it caters to vegetarians too. Apparently, that doesn't go for the lunch menu. We were left with salad and one veggie option that I thought was decent, but my wife wasn't so hot on. The maitre d gave us a dinner menu to look over for the future and it looks like that would be the best option for vegetarians. Overall, ambiance and service were good.
Pican is considered to be more of an upscale southern style cuisine restaurant. Don't get it mixed up with "authentic" style "soul food". That said, the food is STILL very good. It's pricey so they probably won't see me again until the next special occasion.
Fantastic food. The first time I ate here was with a friend. We arrived early and Gabriel a server who was simply there to pick up his check was the only one in the restaraunt sitting on a bar stool. He was in a tank-top, dredlocks and a backpack. It was 5PM and we were on time for our reservation. All restaurant personel were in the "back" for a meeting. Gabriel walked with a smile and ushered us to the bar area. Assured us that someone would be out shortly and began to school us on the culinary journey that I will never forget.
Go to this place! At least twice! Ask for Gabriel! Enjoy the Bourbon and the shortribs!
We visited Pican prior to an event at the Paramount Theatre, we gave ourselves plenty of time to enjoy a delicious mix of drinks, appetizers, and dinner before. The staff a Pican accomodated out seating requests and tended to us through the early evening. Everything from the Bourbon samplers to the end of the meal was exceptional. Variations on many traditional Sourthern Style dishes, chicken, ribs, hush puppies with special twists to bring them to you in a new perspective. Comfort food with a refined edge. Yum!
My boyfriend took me here for my 30th birthday and I had a blast! The waitstaff was super nice, very accommodating - definitely fine dining service. I was so stuffed that unfortunately couldn't order dessert, but our waiter still came over and brought me a little candle. Very sweet. The entire vibe at Pican is fantastic, everyone is happy, having a good time, not pretentious and not obnoxious. It was packed in there and yet felt very private at our table - definitely a plus. LOVE this place.
LOVED this place...from the first pre-dinner cocktail (Louisiana Rebel) to the dessert (Key Lime Pie), a wonderful experience! Southern tradition with a creative twist! We went for birthday celebration, which I noted in Open Table. Without any further mention, and to my surprise, the server presented the birthday person with a candle in her dessert plus a birthday serenade (but not too loud, thank you!). In addition to the fabulous food, I also appreciated the small touches - floating orchids in the ladies room, piano blues drifting from the lounge. Not quiet - at least where we sat near the kitchen - but we could still converse with ease. Not cheap, so save your pennies for a special occasion, because it's worth it!
Friendly staff, attentive but not too attentive service, and the food was fabulous. I enjoyed their California spin on Southern food and Louisiana classics. I'm from Tennessee, but California is my home. So I appreciated the fact that the catfish was not fried and not cooked to death. I felt like the menu was a nice hybrid of my two worlds. And a big thumbs up for carrying Abita beer! Hooray, I haven't had a Turbo Dog in years!!!
We went for brunch at which the prices are much more reasonable than at dinner. The catfish was wonderful! Interesting cocktail menu with different and interesting selections. Had the pecan tart - to die for (all of the desserts sounded good). The one negative was that there seemed to be only two waitpeople on a really busy Sunday morning (so busy that the hostess was turning away people without reservations). Consequently, our waitperson didn't get around to our table to even greet us for quite a while and when I mentioned (more that once) that we were heading off to a play in SF, things still went pretty slowly.
