Pican - Oakland - Permanently Closed Ratings and Reviews
Starting with the charming host, our dining experience was amazing. The cuisine was deliciously prepared. The presentation of the food was awesome. The lavender martini was fab, not too sweet. The Jambalaya Risotto was creamy and spicy and so wonderful. The piano player was so cool. Playing standards and modern tunes that were very easy to listen to yet blend into the background when conversing. Pican is my new fav for a special dining spot as its a little pricey for an everyday "go to", at least for my budget. Completely awesome!
Very disappointed with the wait to be seated, wait to be acknowledged once seated, wait to order a drink. Lots of empty seats, but seated us in thoroughfare between bar and hostess station. Food was fast but some lukewarm. Drinks were good but the expected comfort was not there. Employees were very focused on closing, even at 9 p.m., plates were whisked away with food, service was inadequate. We were there to celebrate birthdays, thought it would be warm, comfortable, hospitable but it wasn't. The vibe was hurry up and wait, eat, go.
The hostess was friendly and polite. While our waitress was nice, her performance was not. I ordered a specific bourbon and it took her a bit to let me know that they were out. The new order I placed didn't arrive until we were done with our appetizer. Our entrees were served much too quickly. I had just gotten my drink. The food portions were minimal. We had to ask for clean silverware after they were used for the appetizer (I noticed this was not the case with the next table).
A good restaurant in the Uptown district of Oakland. Trendy and lively. Food was great, but a bit too salty and greasy for me. The restaurant is bit pretentious and dishonest. I ordered a risotto meal with a very fancy name and price, but it turned out to be just a gumbo. We went to the restaurant 10 minutes before our reservation time and was told that the table is not yet ready and were invited to wait at the bar. We declined and stood at the door. When the time came, we were led to the dining area and we many empty tables. It was not crowded at all when we arrived.
The food is very creative and tasty. The restaurant is lovely and staff is very friendly and helpful with menu selection etc. We enjoyed talking with our host, in his signature bright green sweater, a gorgeous African American young man with a beautiful warm personality & also our server Jill was extremely efficient, friendly and delightful - in spite of the restaurant being pretty crowded! Thank you both especially for a most enjoyable evening.
I grew up eating southern food, but this southern food is beautifully prepared and presented and very sophisticated - many cuts above what I ate as a child. This will become one of our regular spots for dinner and we can highly recommend it. We had Low & Slow Spicy Barbecued Pork Ribs and Warm Artichoke, Shrimp & Louisiana Blue Crab Dip for appetizers. Then Southern Fried Chicken, ‘Gator Gumbo, Hickory Bacon Brussels Sprouts, a plate of greens, and lastly Classic Mac ‘n Cheese. Just writing/thinking about these dishes makes me crave them. We may perhaps have to go back tonight! I read online about the owner , Michael LeBlanc, who is a pretty amazing, successful and creative entrepreneur. Great job with your decor, staff & food!
Great friends made for great company, the food was good, nothing special though, service was terrible, dirty silverware, lipstick residue on bar glasses, no one can back to offer more drinks or to see how we were doing, won't be back, too many other choices in the area, sorry!
Nice interior, excellent food, wait staff friendly and prompt. Only issue was seating hostess, who became surly when I asked not to be seated in a cramped corner next to where waitstaff brought food and plates back and forth. Nevertheless, I would return there.
We arrived on time for a 7 pm reservation and were seated at once. The next time we spoke to a Pican employee was 7:30 when our waiter took a drink order. It was 7:45 when the drinks arrived, and after 8:45 when our entree arrived. The first course had come 20 minutes earlier. Twice after it was cleared someone came out from the kitchen to tell us that our appetizers were almost ready to come out, although we had already eaten them. The food was good, but the interminable delays made the experience unpleasant.
The dining experience is utterly superb! The Southern cuisine is especially wonderful. I would highly recommend the Southern Fried Chicken that is served with Macaroni and cheese. The salmon specials are also tasty. More importantly, though, the service has always been great. I have had the pleasure on several occasions of speaking with the owner, who is a joy. The waiters and waitresses are always attentive and responsive to my needs. I would highly recommend Pican. It is my favorite restaurant in the Bay Area.
Great fried chicken. Service usually spot on. However, 3-17-17, only one server and service not up to par. Server brought us our bill even though we had not yet ordered dessert. I had noted "birthday" on the open table reservation; yet, no special service was provided by pican. I will still eat here, but this visit on 3-17-17 was disappointing.
Disappointed went here for an intimate bday dinner comment was left in the reservation nothing was said, chicken stew was very blah sent it back and ordered fried chicken which was better. Fried bread pudding was good and Mac n cheese. Overall disappointed will not return
I had the lavender lemon drop and pancakes with bourbon syrup, both were very tasty! Unfortunately, the service was agonizingly slow. Our waitress took our order and brought us the check. Other than that, the hostess brought us our food and no one ever checked up on us. We had empty drink glasses for over 40 minutes which is unfortunately because we would have ordered more cocktails. For the amount you pay for a plate at Pican, it would have been nice to have more attention that what we were given.
Service was so so. The waitress had to be halted for us to make requests. Otherwise she would ask "how's everything" and then literally walk away as we answered. I don't need to have my butt kissed but I do expect a degree engagement.
Maybe they where unusually busy. This was a Wednesday night at 7:15.
The sea bass was good. The veggies it was on where an odd mix, didn't pair so well. This of course is just my opinion.
Not sure if I'll go back. Too bad. Heard great things.
This review is from my 78 year old father (excuse the all-caps). We sent my parents there for his birthday. PICAN WAS STRANGE! ONE WAITRESS TRYING TO SERVE AT LEAST 15 TABLES. TOOK FOREVER TO GET TO US FOR OUR INITIAL DRINK ORDER, THEN DRINKS ARRIVED AFTER THE APPETIZER, THEN MAIN COURSE ARRIVED BEFORE WE FINISHED APPETIZER, ORDERED GLASS OF WINE THAT NEVER CAME! CRAZY, HOWEVER FOOD WAS EXCELLENT AND $50 CREDIT WORKED PERFECT. WOULD GO BACK IF SERVICE AND PACE BETTER!
Came here on Fat Tuesday to celebrate our anniversary. It was a mistake. I've read some bad reviews, but thought I give it a shot myself.
My reservation was at 8PM. There were 7 other parties dining at regular tables; some others at the bar. Clearly not packed.
Even after being asked if we were here to celebrate any particular reason (also indicated on the reservation), there was no consideration of improved service. Our order was delivered in the most random order. A bottle of wine finally delivered in the middle of appetizer?
Our food was NOT impressive at all. We had the fried green tomatoes. It was topped with pulled pork slathered in BBQ sauce that was overwhelmingly sweet that nothing else could be enjoyed. It literally tasted like generic BBQ sauce from the bottle. The shrimp and grits was doused in a sweet vinegar that took away from the grits and shrimp's flavors. Brussel Sprouts burnt to char and overcooked. To only one credit to the waiter, she even saw how bad it was and even comped it from our meal. The chicken pot pie was the only order that came to us that was decent. We had to ask for serving spoons with most dishes as they were not delivered. Share plates weren't given until one server realized we were using our bread plates.
Usually dining at restaurants takes well over an hour to two, especially on a special occasion. We were in and out in 40 minutes because we were not going to waste anymore time in the restaurant. Dessert? SKIPPED.
I would not recommend this overpriced and overrated restaurant.
