About Piatti - La Jolla
A tradition to many La Jollans, this Italian bistro serves fresh authentic regional Italian cuisine. A landmark Ficus tree takes up one corner of their very popular patio, but the bright and cheerful dining room is delightful during the day or on those chilly evenings when it’s too cold to sit outside. The menu is presented in an innovative and creative fashion offering a wide variety of pastas, pizza and grilled items. In addition, you may find many vegetarian and health conscious dishes. Brunch is served on Saturday and Sunday and includes specialties such as Uovo Benedetto (Eggs Benefits served on grilled polenta with basil hollandaise) along with omelets and breakfast pizzas.

Piatti - La Jolla Ratings and Reviews
We always enjoy going to Piatti's. The food is consistently fresh and prepared well. The variety of dishes is good. The ambiance is cozy and relaxed. The service is very good. The staff are welcoming. The restaurant is clean. The neighborhood is pleasant and relaxed with no chain eateries. The bar is appealing. The optional outdoor under-the-stars eating area is lovely.
Too bad as this is one of our favorite regular spots and we drive 26 miles each way to get to it. Had a server that practiced taking orders from memory. Had to return shortly after taking the order to reconfirm one of the entrees. Missed an app (ordered 3 received 2). When entrees were dropped I told the server that we wouldn’t be needing our salad course. Response was, “Oh, you ordered salads?” There is a reason why orders should be written down and then recited back so there is no missed communication. Asked for water service, not received until apps arrived and on two occasions the server would watch us pick up the water bottle to refill our glasses and not offer to poor. Had to ask for bread service when apps arrived. Told bread was being made, nice but tables that sat far after us had their bread. Small things if individual but add them up they make a big difference. Server noticed my displeasured demennor and offered a comp dessert to make up for the shortfalls but at that time just wanted out.
Have been going to Piatti's for decades and love it since it is nearby, and the food and ambiance always good. However usually eat outside... That said, Last Saturday, because it was cool, got a table inside... Big mistake, the restaurant was jammed, and so noisy we couldn't hear each other talk.... We ate quickly and left,,, Would be nice if they could somehow reengineer the rooms to make them quieter when the crowds come.
The food and the service was spectacular, and not terribly expensive for fancy Italian food. My only complaint is that I made reservations for a business dinner and they sat us right next to the kitchen, so it was difficult to hear eachother and conduct business. I was not expecting the restaraunt to be so loud and busy on a Wednesday.
I’m leaving this comment after a few not so fab dinners at this particular location. This review is about our visit the other night: Our waitress was perfect in every way. Our food was not so stellar. They forgot the chicken in my kid’s chicken pasta dish. My steak wasn’t flavorful nor hot, my Brussels sprouts weren’t cooked as they have been on every other visit to Piatti at another location (Danville— they’re delicious there), and they re-seated us TWICE (“Oh, whoops; this table is reserved.”) Having grown up with Piatti Danville, attending college with Piatti Sacramento, and now living near Piatti La Jolla, I can assuredly say that La Jolla’s location is the lowest performer in a group of restaurants that I can usually depend on for a delicious (no complaints) dinner. Bummer.
We've been coming here from the date it opened...and before many of the service staff was even born! We even watched OJ in his White Ford Bronco on TV while the Police were chasing him from the TV at Piatti's Bar!!! Its a neighborhood gem.....we'll always be back.
I’d been looking forward to dining here to celebrate my son’s 19th birthday.
I won’t return. I was very disappointed with lackluster service in which the proverbial ball was dropped, inexcusably.
First, lackluster service started with our server, who couldn’t answer simple questions about basic menu items (i.e., is the mushroom soup cream dominant or a touch of cream?). OK, it’s a solveable problem and not that big a deal. I’m not nit picky, I didn’t care so much and it didn’t stop me from getting the soup, which was excellent.
However, my pizza was average at best, certainly nothing to write home about. And while I said yes that I’d have a second glass of wine when she asked attentively, the server took a very long time to bring it. So long, my meal was long finished. I no longer really wanted the wine, but accepted it. I expected at least a festive end to the evening so I wasn’t going to make a big deal. But clearly, our server was not so good.
My expectation of the end of the evening was due to my conversation with whoever manned the phone earlier. I requested a dessert for my son with a candle. It’s his birthday.
I was really excited, they said they’d print a special menu to say happy birthday and. bring dessert.
But they didn’t — and I’d had enough with the lacking service, and the average meal.
The following night I made it up to my son across the street at Osteria Romantica.
At Osteria Romantica, the menu in my opinion has plenty of choices to satisfy most everyone, I find the preparation of what I ate (a shrimp dish in a slightly spicy red sauce) to be simple (which I like), flavorful and portioned properly (enough to satisfy a big eater like me but not overly so).
And the value/pricing at Osteria Romantica can’t be matched, in my experience in La Jolla.
And the service was excellent. And they did follow through with birthday celebration dessert, unlike Piatti.
Go to Osteria Romantica. No contest.
We were a little disappointed to be sat in an empty room when the other room was fun and bustling and the outdoor patios were busy but not full as well. We had our teens with us so we felt like we were put into a “kid room” for punishment. We asked to be moved to the patio and the hostess instantly accommodated us. Patio is pretty and has heaters. Server was very nice but not very attentive. Food was richer than we needed but excellent.
