About Phlox Commons
We're a neighborhood restaurant inside the Hotel Carlton, located between Lower Nob and Upper Tenderloin.
Our kitchen prepares scratch food emphasizing comfort, with a menu equally at home in the pub or in the bistro. Key words are rustic, approachable, wholesome.
Our select line-up of draught beers features local brews and rare one-offs from our favorite breweries. We work direct with brewers to bring in fresh and original beers, and scour inventory lists for hidden gems. We've got an extensive list of sour ales, ciders, and barrel aged beers to compliment our frequently rotating draughts.
We offer 12 wines by the glass that showcase the diversity of California's growing regions. Off beat varietals and wines that represent terroir are highlighted. A varied bottle list rounds out the collection.

This place rules! The crab bene, omelettes, and pesto florentine are frickin’ delish. Great beers too. And don’t forget about the warm donuts and french toast! Fantastic portions, everything is made with local ingredients and all very affordable. We went here for my birthday brunch because they were able to accommodate a big party. Very friendly people. Don’t be fooled by the Lower Nob location, definitely make your way here.
This place is a hidden gem, seriously, if you blink, you'll miss it.
The food was great, the wine selection was great and the service is on point! When we arrived there was only one other party there, and a couple people at the bar, I was seated immediately, I sat and took in the decor, the music choice, ordered a glass of wine, and waited for my friends to arrive.
We ordered 3 apps, 3 entrees, a bottle of wine, 3 separate glasses of wine, dessert, and an entree to-go, total was about $210. Not bad, for the portion and amount of food we had gotten. I recommend the mac + cheese, and sea food pasta dish (I forget the name of the specific dish) but it was really good!

I was very disappointed in the quality of the food at this restaurant. The chicken was very dry and not very flavorful. The brussels sprouts were good,but the chowder left a little to be desired. I did not feel the presentation was very good either and dessert choices were bad for sure!
This was our second time dining at Phlox Commons and we were even more impressed than the first time. The appetizers were delicious, as were all the entrees (burger, lamb shank and sea bass). The quality of food is better than at some of the restaurants where you would pay at least 30% more for your dinner of unimaginative and poorly seasoned food.
If I had any suggestions, it would be changing the restaurant's wine selection by the glass. We tried four options and none of them were that great or even good.
We had a wonderful dining experience at Phlox Commons. There is a great range of food options from appetizers to salads to entrees - for everyone. We tried most of the appetizers, finding the crab cakes, fried pickles and Mac n cheese to be our favorites. The arctic char - a special - was delicious! My sons enjoyed the chicken and the stuffed pepper. I really liked how they prepared the side vegetables. The food tasted fresh and flavorful. While they did not have a full bar, they served an interesting line-up of beers and wine. Wish they had a wider array of desserts. The service was excellent. I highly recommend it!
Was very pleasantly surprised to get a table for 12 on the day. Was a little worried when i realized it was a hotel restaurant but was surprised pleasantly. Food was great and reasonably priced, beer choice was awesome and seevice was impecable. Place was pretty empty so we felt like we had it to ourselves. Music was quiet so there was no need to shout. Highly recommend for big group
We really enjoyed our meal here. The service was great, and the food tasted like someone in the kitchen was paying attention, and cared about what they were cooking. The flatbread was simple, but very tasty, and my husband said his burger was very good. The food is uncomplicated, but well-executed. I would return. It wasn't over-the-top expensive.
Roast chicken was good, and veggies too. My boyfriend ordered the steak and it was burned on the char so it overwhelmed the flavor. I wanted more from the food creatively ,to match the excellent service and descriptions our server gave, but it fell short for me.
Our group of 7 came to Phlox Commons for dinner after a team-building event at the Paniq Room around the corner. We had a reservation for 7pm on a Tuesday, but we actually showed up really early, at 6pm. Our table was already set up and they happily accommodated us, and the service throughout the evening was friendly and attentive without being intrusive. The restaurant was empty at 6, but filled up a bit over the next 90 minutes.
There was a great beer selection (also wine, which we didn't try, but sadly no spirits) and a very tasty array of appetizers—we especially enjoyed the fried mushrooms and the cauliflower gratin; the Brussels sprouts and fried pickles were also good, but we couldn't really taste the leeks in the croquettes. You could easily make a vegetarian tapas-style meal out of starters and sides. We weren't very creative with the mains, so I can only say that the burger and the trout were both very good. I'd characterize this as high-quality bar or comfort food. I don't come to this neighborhood very often and I probably wouldn't go out of my way to eat here, but we had a good experience and no complaints, and we'd come again if we were in the area.
We live in the neighborhood and came across this place through Opentable. Styled as a rustic tavern, it has minimalistic, yet inviting decor with dark wood furniture and floors. We dined during Christmas Eve and were offered prix fixe menu with good options available for the first, second and third courses. Everything we ordered was cooked to perfection. We did wine pairings and each wine complemented the dish to bring out its flavor. If I had one suggestion it would be to work on service as the time between courses was a tad long, but didn't spoil our overall experience. We will definitely be back (I would like to try their trout entree) and recommend the restaurant to our friends.
A very promising new restaurant, still working out the kinks. A beautiful space inside a hip hotel. Food: Really super side veggies, and good fresh trout, but the short ribs were dry and tough. No option for a cup of regular coffee; we had to order lattes or Americanos. Inventive flavors of gelato or sorbet, but not a lot of options for those of us who don't favor frozen desserts.
We stopped by while on vacation in SF. Small, new restaurant with a simple but enticing menu. I had the steak frites and my guest had the trout along with some beers. I found the NY strip to be a bit thin for my liking and was medium in some areas instead of medium-rare throughout. The fries were very well cooked and seasoned, and overall I thought it was still a good value. Fish was cooked perfectly but I would have preferred it seasoned a bit more. Service was excellent throughout the night.
Overall a good dining experience that I plan on repeating next time I'm in town.
