Visiting from NY and found this highly rated establishment. Walked in and it stated, sit where you want. Despite the sign I was told to eat in a cramped corner. We ordered quickly and asked few questions. We mentioned we were from out of town and as I embark on a day of tourism, I hope San Fran residents are nicer than the server. First course came. Food was good. Then second course, no clean silverware, and no cleaning of the table. Then we are about to order deserts and the check was thrown at us. We had a 930 reservation and done at 10 26. I guess it was too late for a restaurant who contends to be open until 1 am. I would give the food a better rating but the service put a bad taste in my mouth.
Ideal spot for a business dinner where you want to be able to easily have conversations and your client is more interested in conversation & good food vs wanting to be bought a high end $200/pp type dinner. Great spot!
We had a wonderful meal prior to a play at the Curran. They had great wines by the glass, and all the small plates we ordered were delicious. Hope to be back soon.
This place is a hidden gem! To my surprise, there were hardly any people eating dinner there on a Saturday night. I think the only reason is because it's inside a hotel, so you can't see it from the street (there is a sign). The food was amazing, and yes I'm an SF foodie, and would consider myself a harsh critic. I think this place had a perfect vibe, chill, hip, eclectic light fixtures & decor, all without being pretentious. Our server was really nice, and made us feel like we were right at home. The food was wonderful and unexpected. The artichoke was delicious, the flat bread was very flat, which I love since I'm trying to be low carb. The pesto angelhair pasta with crab and prawns was obviously not low carb but scrumptious. Will definitely go back!
Table was not ready for seating (although a number of tables were empty). Waited at the bar to be served a beer (10min). Then waited another 15 min at the table for someone to take a food order. The halibut was over cooked. Servers were very polite, but not as attentive or available as one might expect for a 3/4 full restaurant.
Another wonderful meal at Phlox Comons. The fresh catch of the day - halibut with chimchurri tapenade and cauliflower was one of the best dishes I have ever had. It perfectly paired with the Savignon Blanc offered by the glass. We look forward to returning soon.
We are always up for trying a new place. We found Phlox Commons on OpenTable. After reading the reviews, along with what was available on the menu, we decided to make a reservation.
Upon first impression the space looked a little spare. Do not let that put you off. The food is sensational.
We had the Dungeness crabcakes which were served with a side salad with sliced apples. So good! The Caesar salad was wonderful as well. The main course, pesto with shrimp and crab was delightful. We even got grilled bread. We shared a chocolate stout cake for dessert.
The service was efficient and we felt very well taken care of.
The hotel itself offers live music and wine in the evenings from 5:30 to 6:30 PM. We enjoyed a little jazz before going into dinner.
We will definitely go back...And we are bringing friends.
Phlox is a total hidden gem of a restaurant. I am not one to normally dine in my hotel restaurant but I am SO glad I tried this place. The food is great - creative and fresh selections - however the service is what puts this restaurant over the top. Ryan (manager?) went out of his way, on multiple occasions, to take care of me - offer suggestions, provide samples and just make me feel like family. Come enjoy a meal here - you will love the service and the food.
Nice space, great food and service.
A cozy spot that's great for groups; got dinner with about 8 in the party at 8pm on a Saturday, about 1/2 full, but energetic/fun. Good beer/wine selection and an attentive staff. Good amount on the menu to please many tastes.
Great family feeling service. Delicious food and comfortable/cozy ambiance.
Fantastic meal! The owners are super friendly. Great vibe. Definitely will be back soon!
This place rules! The crab bene, omelettes, and pesto florentine are frickin’ delish. Great beers too. And don’t forget about the warm donuts and french toast! Fantastic portions, everything is made with local ingredients and all very affordable. We went here for my birthday brunch because they were able to accommodate a big party. Very friendly people. Don’t be fooled by the Lower Nob location, definitely make your way here.
Awesome meal. Excellent food, but it was really the staff that made our evening. They were friendly and extremely knowledgeable about the menu (food and drinks). Huge beer selection and great tunes as well.
This place is a hidden gem, seriously, if you blink, you'll miss it.
The food was great, the wine selection was great and the service is on point! When we arrived there was only one other party there, and a couple people at the bar, I was seated immediately, I sat and took in the decor, the music choice, ordered a glass of wine, and waited for my friends to arrive.
We ordered 3 apps, 3 entrees, a bottle of wine, 3 separate glasses of wine, dessert, and an entree to-go, total was about $210. Not bad, for the portion and amount of food we had gotten. I recommend the mac + cheese, and sea food pasta dish (I forget the name of the specific dish) but it was really good!
+Bonus—the kitchen is open till 11!
Great place - good people - excellent food. Genuine.
I was very disappointed in the quality of the food at this restaurant. The chicken was very dry and not very flavorful. The brussels sprouts were good, but the chowder left a little to be desired. I did not feel the presentation was very good either and dessert choices were bad for sure!
Great neighborhood gem that we stumbled upon last minute on a Saturday night for dinner. Great food, drinks and service. Such a cute ambiance and great for dinner w/ friends or a date.
Good portion size, great value for SF, attentive service
Really fun and cozy place. The food and service was amazing. Really loved their seafood dishes and their steak was yummy too!
No cocktails but wine and beer was good enough.
This was our second time dining at Phlox Commons and we were even more impressed than the first time. The appetizers were delicious, as were all the entrees (burger, lamb shank and sea bass). The quality of food is better than at some of the restaurants where you would pay at least 30% more for your dinner of unimaginative and poorly seasoned food.
Good food, good service, good company. Liked the decor. Pleasant evening.
We had a wonderful dining experience at Phlox Commons. There is a great range of food options from appetizers to salads to entrees - for everyone. We tried most of the appetizers, finding the crab cakes, fried pickles and Mac n cheese to be our favorites. The arctic char - a special - was delicious! My sons enjoyed the chicken and the stuffed pepper. I really liked how they prepared the side vegetables. The food tasted fresh and flavorful. While they did not have a full bar, they served an interesting line-up of beers and wine. Wish they had a wider array of desserts. The service was excellent. I highly recommend it!
Wonderful service and delicious food!
Wonderful food, everything we had was so tasty! Highly recommended.
Wonderful owners too.
We had a lovely time at Phlox Commons - it was a bit quiet (albeit we were there on a Sunday evening), but the server was extremely friendly and knowledgeable about the wine list. The wines were a good value, and everyone enjoyed their food.
Food was good. Casual atmosphere. Great classic rock music and not too loud. Nice place to hang out. I would go again
The food, service, values, and ambiance was spot on! Everyone should give this diamond in the rough a try!
Excellent spot for a business dinner with PT of town guests. Excellent service from Ryan and all the crew. Each dish was generous and flavorful. Thank you!
This place will be San Francisco's hot spot before you know it. The couple that runs it love what they do and it shows
Was very pleasantly surprised to get a table for 12 on the day. Was a little worried when i realized it was a hotel restaurant but was surprised pleasantly. Food was great and reasonably priced, beer choice was awesome and seevice was impecable. Place was pretty empty so we felt like we had it to ourselves. Music was quiet so there was no need to shout. Highly recommend for big group
We really enjoyed our meal here. The service was great, and the food tasted like someone in the kitchen was paying attention, and cared about what they were cooking. The flatbread was simple, but very tasty, and my husband said his burger was very good. The food is uncomplicated, but well-executed. I would return. It wasn't over-the-top expensive.
Staff couldn't keep up with customers. Food was over salted and they ran out of several ingredients. Too bad because food had potential but the service was horrible. I wish we hadn't wasted our last night in San Francisco here.
Roast chicken was good, and veggies too. My boyfriend ordered the steak and it was burned on the char so it overwhelmed the flavor. I wanted more from the food creatively ,to match the excellent service and descriptions our server gave, but it fell short for me.
Trying to hard to make food unusual. Flavors sometimes do not enhance each other
Delish comfort food with interesting twists. Great service and cool atmosphere.
Our group of 7 came to Phlox Commons for dinner after a team-building event at the Paniq Room around the corner. We had a reservation for 7pm on a Tuesday, but we actually showed up really early, at 6pm. Our table was already set up and they happily accommodated us, and the service throughout the evening was friendly and attentive without being intrusive. The restaurant was empty at 6, but filled up a bit over the next 90 minutes.
There was a great beer selection (also wine, which we didn't try, but sadly no spirits) and a very tasty array of appetizers—we especially enjoyed the fried mushrooms and the cauliflower gratin; the Brussels sprouts and fried pickles were also good, but we couldn't really taste the leeks in the croquettes. You could easily make a vegetarian tapas-style meal out of starters and sides. We weren't very creative with the mains, so I can only say that the burger and the trout were both very good. I'd characterize this as high-quality bar or comfort food. I don't come to this neighborhood very often and I probably wouldn't go out of my way to eat here, but we had a good experience and no complaints, and we'd come again if we were in the area.
An enjoyable menu of bacon fries, fried pickles, cauliflower gratin, chicken both fried and roasted, steak and the sweet potato, all tasty paired with some lovely wine and good service.
Meal was ok but not interesting. The atmosphere was generic
Great service. Really nice evening. Low in atmosphere but a great quiet spot to catch up with friends.
