Philippe Ratings and Reviews
Hot and sour soup is a litmus test for a Chinese restaurant, and Philippe passes with A+. The two duck dishes, Peking Duck and a similar one are fabulous, and the variety of shrimp/prawn dishes all seem to be noteworthy. The Prix Fixe lunch is an exceptional value, particularly for the neighborhood. The restaurant is larger than expected appearance from the street, and even when crowded, it seems they honor reservations in a timely fashion.
First time here, the service was impeccable! From the start with the hostess, the wait staff and helpers they were all friendly, courteous, knowledgable and very attentive. The food was very authentic and delicious!!! I ordered the Bronzino fillet delicious!
Service wasn’t great here, felt like we were being rushed. Our server wasn’t very informative and I couldn’t understand him much. The orders were a little mixed up. The environment was pretty nice, except for the loud customers sitting next to us. The food was on point.
Waiter told us a friend had ordered the dessert for us but yet he charged us the $18 for it! He saw that I gave my husband a birthday card and even when I asked for the check he came out with a presentation of a baked Alaska dessert with cotton candy. Then when we asked who had sent us that he said he doesn’t know. Then I got the check and I had to pay for it ! I felt bamboozled! Especially since it wasn’t a dessert we even would have asked for! We have been coming here for years and this has never happened before. Very disappointing
Everything at Philippe was superb! The food was delicious. We ordered Peking duck, Szechuan dumplings, and the lettuce wrap with chicken. The service was excellent! This was our first visit next time we will ask to be upstairs as it was noisy as people were enjoying their experience. We can’t wait to go back.
Amazing Food, Stellar Service bit Just OK Ambiance. For a premier chines food establishment it could use a bit of a make over. A change in decor to liven up the environment, create more space and section off booths to be able to create a cozier feel for those looking for a more intimate date night.
Peking duck is the specialty and it did not disappoint! I put in the order as we sat down and the wait was not long. We also had pork fried dumplings which were excellent. Our waiter was from Serbia; very pleasant and knowledgeable. The duck was carved at table and was superb - crispy skin and juicy meat. The pancakes were plentiful and were replenished at least once. The restaurant appears to be an old standby - most enjoyable. We will return!
Everything in terms of food was very under-seasoned and underwhelming. You could tell both in terms of the general atmosphere and food that this must have once been the go-to hot spot, and those days have come and gone. The service was fine, our server was knowledgeable and courteous, but that alone couldn't save the meal. It did have a great bar scene going on, and that would be the only thing I'd really have any interest in going back to check out.
Went for my birthday with my boyfriend a few days ago. Heat was high, restaurant was extremely warm. Chicken satay was good as recommended as long as you don't mind a lot of peanut sauce and flavor. Lo mein was incredible. Dumplings fried we're good. Very small and squished together seating - they tried to accomadate our opentable request for seating with privacy upstairs in the red room but as soon as it was getting busy there was nothing they could have done unless they could magically expand the restaurant lol. Overall 7/10 for food but drinks were terrible. We are drinkers and two of the signature cocktails were just filled with juice and much too sweet and the lemon drop martini tasted "juicy" as well which is odd because my normal martini would include vodka only. I probably wouldn't go back by choice I'd try somewhere new but if there was a group going I would have no problem with it. For me the bad drinks and the overcrowding was overpowering although the food was quite delicious.
I ordered steak with shrimp fried rice and was not even asked how I would like my steak. The food was brought to my table in a matter of ten minutes and the steak was very squishy, the fried rice was plain and the shrimp had no flavor. I have had better Chinese food just from ordering at regular local Chinese restaurants. I also tried the desert with the cotton candy and it was just cool for pictures/videos. Once it was time to eat it, everything on the plate tasted burnt except for the ice cream.
The Peking Duck is one of the best I've ever had! Truly wonderful. All the food is wonderful. We hit this place every time we are in NYC. This however was the first time the service was poor. Had to keep requesting to see our waiter. I'll still be going back.
