Philippe Ratings and Reviews
Amazing Food, Stellar Service bit Just OK Ambiance. For a premier chines food establishment it could use a bit of a make over. A change in decor to liven up the environment, create more space and section off booths to be able to create a cozier feel for those looking for a more intimate date night.
Peking duck is the specialty and it did not disappoint! I put in the order as we sat down and the wait was not long. We also had pork fried dumplings which were excellent. Our waiter was from Serbia; very pleasant and knowledgeable. The duck was carved at table and was superb - crispy skin and juicy meat. The pancakes were plentiful and were replenished at least once. The restaurant appears to be an old standby - most enjoyable. We will return!
Everything in terms of food was very under-seasoned and underwhelming. You could tell both in terms of the general atmosphere and food that this must have once been the go-to hot spot, and those days have come and gone. The service was fine, our server was knowledgeable and courteous, but that alone couldn't save the meal. It did have a great bar scene going on, and that would be the only thing I'd really have any interest in going back to check out.
Went for my birthday with my boyfriend a few days ago. Heat was high, restaurant was extremely warm. Chicken satay was good as recommended as long as you don't mind a lot of peanut sauce and flavor. Lo mein was incredible. Dumplings fried we're good. Very small and squished together seating - they tried to accomadate our opentable request for seating with privacy upstairs in the red room but as soon as it was getting busy there was nothing they could have done unless they could magically expand the restaurant lol. Overall 7/10 for food but drinks were terrible. We are drinkers and two of the signature cocktails were just filled with juice and much too sweet and the lemon drop martini tasted "juicy" as well which is odd because my normal martini would include vodka only. I probably wouldn't go back by choice I'd try somewhere new but if there was a group going I would have no problem with it. For me the bad drinks and the overcrowding was overpowering although the food was quite delicious.
I ordered steak with shrimp fried rice and was not even asked how I would like my steak. The food was brought to my table in a matter of ten minutes and the steak was very squishy, the fried rice was plain and the shrimp had no flavor. I have had better Chinese food just from ordering at regular local Chinese restaurants. I also tried the desert with the cotton candy and it was just cool for pictures/videos. Once it was time to eat it, everything on the plate tasted burnt except for the ice cream.
The Peking Duck is one of the best I've ever had! Truly wonderful. All the food is wonderful. We hit this place every time we are in NYC. This however was the first time the service was poor. Had to keep requesting to see our waiter. I'll still be going back.
The front desk staff was very warm and friendly.
The maitre was very welcoming! He made sure if any of us had any questions regarding wine or food, please don't hesitate to ask. Very knowledgeable on the food and wine! He was very attentive, professional, warm, friendly and helpful. The other staff members were also professional, warm and attentive. We truly enjoyed the ambiance, food and drinks. We will definitely return for a ladies night out or another special occasion.
We have dined at Philippe on several occasions before October 25.....We waited while others with same amount in their party sat before we did....Our server was insisting that we have our meal served in a different manner than we requested...The service was rushed, unlike our initial seating...I think that since the reservation was made thru Open Table, we were treated like 2nd class citizens. This is no reflection on Open Table which is an amazing service. It makes life so much easier than making the phone call. I do think however that some restaurants do not offer the same service when the reservation is made on Open Table...Once my husband presented the black American Express card, we received a very different kind of treatment, except of course, we were finished. I hope you share this with the management of Philippe since, I do not know if I will dine there again and if I do, I should not use Open Table....its a bit of a dilemma......
Philippe has outstanding peking duck, made to order and carved at the table. Served with light pancakes, scallions and hoisin sauce. Delicious. Order the fried rice to go with it. We started with delicious sautéed shrimp and shrimp dumplings in a spicy sauce. And of course, we couldn't leave without having their fabulous spare ribs. Ate too much, and everything was delicious!
Philippe has the best Asian food I have EVER had! We had a reservation and were seated right away on a busy Saturday night which was awesome since our group was very hungry. Our server was very friendly and attentive and the food came out quickly and piping hot. The food here is so delicious and the quality is unreal. I don't know how they do it, but the chicken is so tender and flavorful, it is unlike any I have had anywhere else. We will definitely be back next time we are in NYC!
The food was very, very good (actually forgot how good it is) but the noise level was deafening by diners in groups who had too much to drink hence forgetting how to behave in public. I would go either very early or very late to avoid the riff raff. Or call for delivery.
A friend of mine recommended it and I had heard great things about it. I made a reservation but to my surprise we were seated in the private room upstairs where there was a very noisy group already seated and our table was really close to another couple next to us that was also quite noisy. The table was dirty and there were lipstick marks on my wine glass that were not mine. The food and service are great but I was a bit disappointed with the overall experience which ended up making even the food not worth the price we paid
