Sleek and modern with one foot firmly in the Old World is the feeling at Perbacco. The restaurant boasts a brick wall original to the historic 1913 Hind building, with other touches such as a bar top and floor tiles made from white Carrara marble. With 16 seats at the bar and 7 more intimate tables, Perbacco creates an atmosphere for a glass of wine or a light bite. Perbacco also features 2 dining rooms, one on the main floor and a smaller one on the Mezzanine, which has the added allure of serving as "theater", with windows to watch all the action in the kitchen below.
Chef Staffan Terje strives to cook the finest food reflecting the Italian regions of Piemonte and Liguria. Handcrafted, house-made salumi, prosciutto and other charcuterie are not to be missed. Perbacco Ratings and Reviews
I had not visited Perbacco for a few years but decided to make it the location of my birthday dinner this year. I informed the restaurant upon making a reservation that it was my birthday and they acknowledged it when they called back to confirm the booking. Unfortunately, that was it as far as special treatment is concerned. No one mentioned it at the restaurant which was rather disappointing. We also had to wait half an hour for our table after arriving just a few minutes after our reservation time. There was nowhere to stand or sit and they seated everyone who arrived after us. Eventually some bar seats opened up so we could at least order drinks while waiting. I was not happy. When I was about to check on the situation, I was told we were next. Convenient.
The food here is good. Not amazing but good. We ordered the veal with tuna sauce and buffalo mozzarella to start, both tasted great. The complimentary bread was also tastier than at other restaurants. Our main courses were two pasta dishes. One was pappardelle with short rib ragu which was a little drier than I expected and there wasn't much meat. The other was named tajarin; it was thin tagliatelle with pork and porcini mushroom sauce. It was delicious. The pasta dishes are priced okay, their secondi are more expensive. I thought the appetizers were expensive.
We had a couple of cocktails and wine, just okay.
Our wait staff was very nice and food came promptly. But overall I was disappointed. Our meal felt rushed, and the service wasn't individualized. It was like we were on a conveyer belt, the sooner we left, the sooner they could fill our table with another patron without caring much who it is.
I will probably not return. There are plenty of other restaurants in San Francisco that take better care of their customers.
I had been here before and recall that the food and service was good, but this time the meals were terrible. Starters were ok but pasta was dry and little flavor. The server was not friendly and would simply remove glasses rather than ask if we wanted to order another drink (so we were left drink-less) for part of the meal.
Our server was fantastic. My guest is a vegetarian and ordered risotto, and the server let him know that it was cooked in chicken broth but that they could cook it without. My guest loved that kind of awareness, and loved the dish, plus the brussels sprouts. This is a never-fail good lunch.
Had a great first visit. Server Colin took care of us without pushing the pace or being overly attentive and made thoughtful suggestions as to dishes to order and wine to pair. Will return for more.
-The bread service that helped wipe up the sauce at the bottom of every dish
Service was excellent, they split each course into two so we could easily share, food well prepared and tasty, allowed us to take our time through courses. Birthday celebration - arrived to a card and received special birthday desert. Very close to Embarcadero BART station. Recommend!
Great time at Perbacco! The staff was incredibly helpful (even let me charge my phone and take a phone call in their basement hall away from the noise!!). It’s a great place for a date at the bar or a girl’s night. I was there for a business lunch and it was pretty hard to hear in the alcove. I would definitely recommend sitting in a boot at the front or at the bar. Thanks Perbacco!
PERBACCO is slipping. I’ve been a longtime customer and had some great meals here in the past. The last three visits, the food has been a disappointment. On this visit, the pappardelle with ragu was virtually tasteless. I will have to find another go-to place for lunch.
This was our first time visiting Perbacco. Overall it’s a 5/5, but a few things could be tweaked. The temperature in the place was way too warm. I understand it was a colder night for San Fran, but it did not need to be north of 75! The food was great. We did the beet salad which was a perfect 10. The Short Rib rague paperdelle pasta was great and I did the Quail. Both top notch. Finished with the brown butter cake and gelato.
Eaten here many times for business lunches and personal dinners. The antipasti and pasta were up to their usual very high standards, but both secondi fell flat. The pork chop was so over cooked and dry it was barely edible, and the duck was underdone, with a lamentable salad.
Dined on a Saturday before New Year's Eve with friends who flew in to spend 24 hours in SF. We brought our own old Barbaresco Rabaja. We started with the house special octopus and a truffles burrata. Next we shared raviora and papardalle. Our mains were shared, too, the sea bass and scallops. To finish we shared a Gelato and goat cheese with honey, sultanas & almonds. Walked back to the Palace on a beautiful night.
Perbacco is a perfect Italian food alternative to the standard fare at over-touristed North Beach restaurants. There is an understated sophistication to both the atmosphere and the menu at Perbacco. While prices are on the higher side, the exquisite tastes are worth the it. Perbacco is more for foodies than lovers of traditional robust tomato-paste dominated pasta dishes. Bring the family, a friend, a date or go alone. Just go. You'll love it.
Excellent service and authentic northern Italian food. The agnolatti dal plin was by far the best plate we ordered, full of flavor and just the right touch of spiciness. Our daughter and her friend both loved the pappardelle. The seared sea scallops were perfectly browned, but only 4 of them for $35?!? Seemed a tad stingy to me, as was the wine pour for wine by the glass. They were very accommodating when I mistakenly reserved for 3 instead of 4, and the service was excellent: attentive without being invasive.
We had an early dinner after post Christmas shopping downtown. Cocktails were excellent and noise in our seating area was low so we could converse in a normal voice. My duck main course sounded delicious but was just average in flavor. My husband's pork chop main course was outstanding for him. Hazelnut gelato desert awesome and huge (2 large scoops). Nice setting for business meals.
This was a horrible dining experience. Having gone to their partner restaurant, I expected more. The food was horrible and the service was horrible it was way too loud and it took a very, very long time. I will never go back and I will never recommend this place to anyone.
