Sleek and modern with one foot firmly in the Old World is the feeling at Perbacco. The restaurant boasts a brick wall original to the historic 1913 Hind building, with other touches such as a bar top and floor tiles made from white Carrara marble. With 16 seats at the bar and 7 more intimate tables, Perbacco creates an atmosphere for a glass of wine or a light bite. Perbacco also features 2 dining rooms, one on the main floor and a smaller one on the Mezzanine, which has the added allure of serving as "theater", with windows to watch all the action in the kitchen below.
Chef Staffan Terje strives to cook the finest food reflecting the Italian regions of Piemonte and Liguria. Handcrafted, house-made salumi, prosciutto and other charcuterie are not to be missed. Seasonal pastas, a tradition in Piemonte, range from the traditional ravioli to the more exotic agnolotti. Main courses feature dishes such as stuffed quail breast, a selection of seafood dishes, and vegetarian options.

As always, a stellar experience. The current SFChefs2010 prix fixe menu is a terrific value for anyone who has been wanting to try this restaurant--and you will definitely want to go back again to try the regular menu. Amazing food, lovely atmosphere--it's the best restaurant in San Francisco in my book.

It was very good. Sf Chefs fixes price meal was overall a great deal. The service was a little off, the staff tried to give us the same beet course twice. I thought the pasta with braised short ribs, was outstanding. The final course-pork was just ok. I enjoyed the wine pairing also. All in all was a nice night.

We had the great fortune to have gone to Perbacco during SF Chefs, allowing us to sample the best that the restaurant had to offer. It was absolutely phenomenal. The dishes were prepared with an eye to attractive plating and were cooked with no holds barred when it came to flavour. They also offered a wine selection that was paired to the SF Chefs menu, which complemented each dish very well. Dessert was fantastic as well. We enjoyed it so much, that we went back the next night. I would highly recommend Perbacco to anyone in the Bay Area. Thanks for the wonderful food!

Consult the sommelier for some incredible italian wines. Better yet, talk to him a day before so he can prep them for you, stand them up, decant them.

A varied menu of Italian cuisine prepared with a twist. Flavor is what the food is all about and the kitchen is up to the task. But what makes Perbacco a fine dining experience is the service staff. Right from when one walks in, the greeter is on top of why you are there and does everything to see to it that you are being attended to as you wait for your table. The wait staff is informed and patient. We had a very enjoyable first visit. The noise in this place is it's main failing. Don't expect to be able to carry on a conversation here.

My friend and I both enjoyed our meal immensely. Everything we had was delicious, from the two pastas, the appetizers, vegetables and dessert. I personally enjoyed the special cookies, a meringue/hazelnut delight, the best cookie ever.

Except for the dim lighting on the second floor, where we ate and which made reading the menu an adventure, everything was excellent. My halibut was great, but my wife's lamb chops, which she ordered medium, arrived well-done. The beet salad was extraordinary. Our friends loved their dishes. This is our second time here, and we'll be coming back .

Perbacco combines exquisite food with excellent service. From the veal crudo with lardo encrusted crostini to the pork shoulder with stone fruits, everything was delicious. The wine list is superb and the sommelier extremely helpful.

Unlike our previous visits, the service from our waitperson was extremely poor. There were long periods with no service, and when he did come by, the service was rude and hostile. Perhaps he was having a bad night, but snide remarks, slamming plates the table, disappearing for long periods, etc., among other service issues, gave the impression that he just could not be bothered with even trying to put up a good front. Despite the very good food, the service was so poor that we were quite embarrassed we had selected Perbacco for our one meal with very dear guests from out of town. This meal was, unfortunately, memorable for all the wrong reasons and with so many other great restaurants in SF, we will not be returning anytime soon.

Had the salumi platter and the tomato salad for appetizers and both were wonderful. There were four in our party and each ordered a different pasta and they were all great. Excellent wine and the desserts were outstanding.

Our waitperson was very knowledgeable and helpful. It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

Fantastic wine list featuring an overwhelming selection of Italian wines. Fortunately, the sommelier is excellent and she selected a rare varietal that is one of the best wines I have ever had, at less than $100. The food is excellent; portions are on the smallish side, which is typical of restaurants of this caliber. The bar is a great place to have a glass of wine or eat lunch/dinner when its crowded. The bartenders are friendly, also have good wine list knowledge and recommendations and are very generous in their pours. This is one of my favorite restaurants in San Francisco and I eat there regularly for business and pleasure.

great food and service. Couldn't ask for more. We went for lunch and ordered lots of appetizers-- one more delicious than the next, great presentation and taste. Don't miss the burrata with corn and tomato. Barbacco next door even better.

The service was outstanding. I wish I could remember our server's name, so I could single him out for kudos. He was there when we needed him, and not when we didn't. He was very well versed in wines, which impressed my sister, who has been in the wine business for many years. The food was quite tasty, but was almost overshadowed by the fabulous service.

The food was good and the place was nicely decorated. The only problem (and the reason why I probably wouldn't go back) is that it was very noisy. The acoustics of the place were poor. You had to speak in a very loud voice in order to be heard by those at your table.

Another terrific experience at Perbacco. Our waiter was gracious and professional. The food was outstanding as usual. Will return again and again, and as long as they are on the menu, we will order the angolotti dal plin and the brown butter pistachio cake. Consistently great, always one of our favorite destinations.

hello,

i've been to perbacco probably 7-8 times within the last 3 years and always had the perfect meal. i'm not one to complain but on our last visit i ordered the alaskan halibut and it VERY dry. my dinner guests had a try and they concurred. unfortunately our server did not stop by after serving the entrees so i never had the opportunity to discuss my meal or even had the opportunity to send it back (which i rarely ever do). just thought you should know . . .

We have been to Perbacco many times, but this time was a big disappointment. The service was almost nonexistent---it took 20 minutes to get the server back to order coffee and dessert. The pastas were very good--especially the ricotta with meyer lemon, mint and fresh peas and the ricotta gnocchi. For my entree, I ordered lamb chops. One was fabulous, but the other had so much gristle and bone that I was able to salvage only one tiny bit of meat. I might have complained, if we could have found our server. My husband had the same experience with his duck. A couple of slices were delicious, but the others had too much gristle. All in all, the experience was so poor that we won't give Perbacco another try.

A solid Italian restaurant you can feel comfortable using for any occaision, business or pleasure. Solid bar, but the by the glass wine list is only fair for a restaurant of this caliber. The kitchen exhibits good creativity and fine execution with a good grounding in the essential Italian ingredients and cooking. The general tolerance and appreciation of well behaved children, plus a menu which contains choices a kid can appreciate, is a rare treat for this part of town. Overall a great, though expensive, choice.

Visited for dinner while on vacation. I had been once before a couple of years ago when vacationing and loved it! My return to Perbacco did not disappoint. The food and service are great. I had the duck and my friend had the salmon. We both enjoyed our meals and appreciated the help from our knowledgeble server regarding wine choices. Loved the wines he recommended after we described what we were looking for. Will return to this restaurant whenever I am back in San Francisco.
