About Perbacco

Sleek and modern with one foot firmly in the Old World is the feeling at Perbacco. The restaurant boasts a brick wall original to the historic 1913 Hind building, with other touches such as a bar top and floor tiles made from white Carrara marble. With 16 seats at the bar and 7 more intimate tables, Perbacco creates an atmosphere for a glass of wine or a light bite. Perbacco also features 2 dining rooms, one on the main floor and a smaller one on the Mezzanine, which has the added allure of serving as "theater", with windows to watch all the action in the kitchen below.
Chef Staffan Terje strives to cook the finest food reflecting the Italian regions of Piemonte and Liguria. Handcrafted, house-made salumi, prosciutto and other charcuterie are not to be missed. Seasonal pastas, a tradition in Piemonte, range from the traditional ravioli to the more exotic agnolotti. Main courses feature dishes such as stuffed quail breast, a selection of seafood dishes, and vegetarian options.

Could not have been better!!! The food and service were absolutely first-class or above! Expensive, but worth every penny. Also, since it's downtown, the valet parking was totally worth it.

We were in on a Monday for a business dinner. The food was very good, our server was attentive, we weren't too thrilled with our location, by the kitchen and in front of the bathroom entrance, but were understanding as we had increased the number of guests last minute. What was really upsetting was the way we were treated by your hostess she was not welcoming, and didn't smile at all. We had arrived at 5:00 for a 5:30 reservation and intended to meet our clients at the bar. My colleague and I approached the top of the bar only to have the hostess rush over and shoo us away from the area as if we were naughty children, saying "oh no you can't go there, it's reserved for a private event" as if we should have known this. She then told us to sit in one of the booths. We sat for a moment, but then decided it would be too cramped once our guests arrived. We got up to go and sit by the bar anyway. The hostess came after us and again tried to get us to sit back down in the booth, even when we told her that there would be 5 of us, and the booth didn't look comfortable.
Both my colleague, and myself were quite put out by her attitude, and did not expect to receive such an unpleasant reception.

This was for a birthday party for my girlfriend's sister. Service was excellent, my food was decent, but everyone else wasn't wowed by their dishes.

Appetizers: Sunchoke - good flavor, wish they gave a bit more sauce and sunflower seeds to really bring out the flavor, and some were undercooked (7/10). Brussel sprouts - nothing spectacular about them, maybe could've done well with some more acidity (6/10).

I had the liberty duck breast, which was cooked well, but with an orange sauce that felt too artificial and didn't go well with it. Also the skin could have been crisper (7/10).

The birthday girl and girlfriend had the Tarjarin, which was a bit bland and neither one seemed impressed with the dish (4/10) .

The friend had the Papparadelle; this ended up being the main course of the evening, well seasoned, and good balance of flavor (8/10)

Overall, I'd rate this place a 6.5/10. Pluses for the great service and drinks (try the Foreign Policy) but for such a fancy place you'd expect better food given the prices.

The food was phenomenal and the staff service was amazing. I highly recommend this restaurant for a fancy date night or special occasion. I had the risotto and my boyfriend had the beef cheek. Both were absolutely out of this world.

FANTASTIC Dinner. I can’t believe I didn’t know about this GEM in SF. The scallops were the best I’ve had in 20 years....like the ones I would get in New England. They were perfectly seared and had the flavor and texture was memorable. Pasta dishes were divine....like in Italy. Service was a 10. Will definitely be back.

Scallops were nicely cooked but for a dish that cost about $35, I expected more than 4 scallops and some mixed greens. Lemon dessert was just okay. Was pretty underwhelming...

Completely Disappointed!!!
Super noisy. Wait staff hurry you along.
Food was below average and very bland.
Tables are super close and the noise level is off the charts. The martini is super small in the smallest glass I ever saw.
There are plenty of other incredible restaurants in SF before going here. Don’t waste you money like we did.

The wait staff is very knowledgeable about the menu, and wine list. The wine they recommended paired perfectly with our food selection. My husband and I planned on sharing two appetizers and two small pasta plates before sharing the slow roasted pork shoulder with apples. Unfortunately, our eyes were bigger than our stomachs. We have already made plans to go back for the slow roasted pork shoulder with apples, or perhaps we will find something else that strikes our fancy that night.

We can't wait for our next visit!

The past 2 visits left me with a salty after-taste waking me up and 1:00 then 2:00 in the morning to get a glass of water. I think the brussell sprouts were the culprit. However, I was then up again at 3 am with lower intestinal problems. Unfortunately, this is the second time this has happened here in the past 2 months. I don't think they have fresh fish deliveries on Saturday's. This is too bad since we have dinner out every Saturday night and this might be the last time for Perbacco for the foreseeable future. All the people we interacted with were great, hostess, bartender and waitress. Food not so much.

We had a business team dinner for 5 on a Thursday night recently. We were all hungry after a very long day and they delivered some starters, mozzarella comprese and another cheese sampling, and our wine arrived quickly-much appreciated and delicious. Our entrees arrived without complications, too. The tarjin pasta was wonderful.

As with most financial district restaurants in SF, the acoustics are not good and the tables are too small and too close to each other. We had adjusted our expectations accordingly before we got there but by comparison, the experience at Jardiniere the night before was better...room to breathe, quieter and the food and service was better. No difference in price per person.

Bottom line, finding restaurants like Sociale and Jardiniere in SF, located outside the financial district, are well worth the taxi/uber/lyft ride. After a long day, you deserve more civility. But, Perbacco is fine...adjust your expectations for experience accordingly.

I had not visited Perbacco for a few years but decided to make it the location of my birthday dinner this year. I informed the restaurant upon making a reservation that it was my birthday and they acknowledged it when they called back to confirm the booking. Unfortunately, that was it as far as special treatment is concerned. No one mentioned it at the restaurant which was rather disappointing. We also had to wait half an hour for our table after arriving just a few minutes after our reservation time. There was nowhere to stand or sit and they seated everyone who arrived after us. Eventually some bar seats opened up so we could at least order drinks while waiting. I was not happy. When I was about to check on the situation, I was told we were next. Convenient.
The food here is good. Not amazing but good. We ordered the veal with tuna sauce and buffalo mozzarella to start, both tasted great. The complimentary bread was also tastier than at other restaurants. Our main courses were two pasta dishes. One was pappardelle with short rib ragu which was a little drier than I expected and there wasn't much meat. The other was named tajarin; it was thin tagliatelle with pork and porcini mushroom sauce. It was delicious. The pasta dishes are priced okay, their secondi are more expensive. I thought the appetizers were expensive.
We had a couple of cocktails and wine, just okay.
Our wait staff was very nice and food came promptly. But overall I was disappointed. Our meal felt rushed, and the service wasn't individualized. It was like we were on a conveyer belt, the sooner we left, the sooner they could fill our table with another patron without caring much who it is.
I will probably not return. There are plenty of other restaurants in San Francisco that take better care of their customers.

I had been here before and recall that the food and service was good, but this time the meals were terrible. Starters were ok but pasta was dry and little flavor. The server was not friendly and would simply remove glasses rather than ask if we wanted to order another drink (so we were left drink-less) for part of the meal.

Our server was fantastic. My guest is a vegetarian and ordered risotto, and the server let him know that it was cooked in chicken broth but that they could cook it without. My guest loved that kind of awareness, and loved the dish, plus the brussels sprouts. This is a never-fail good lunch.

Had a great first visit. Server Colin took care of us without pushing the pace or being overly attentive and made thoughtful suggestions as to dishes to order and wine to pair. Will return for more.

Standouts:
-Duck breast
-Branzino
-Octopus
-The bread service that helped wipe up the sauce at the bottom of every dish
