I was disappointed in this restaurant. The greeting from the host was unbelievably cold. I came in alone, very wet from walking from BART in the rain, he simply said: "Can't seat you until your reservation time and your other guest arrives". That's fine but no offer to take my wet coat, where to sit, would you like to wait at the bar-nope...really unpleasant first encounter. At this point, no matter how good the food was I wouldn't return which is too bad because the decor/ambiance is warm and inviting on a rainy day. BUT, the chicken dish I had at lunch was dry, the brussel sprouts were hard and tasteless, I couldn't even finish it. The service was OK not too friendly either. Sorry to say we won't go back.

Food was outstanding as was the service. We were seated quickly and taken care of immediately. I actually ate here 2x this trip to San Fran. Had lunch there and had to go back for dinner

Absolutely not recommended. Don't know why this place is so popular. My chicken sandwich was dry. McDonald's serves a better sandwich at about $10 less. The waitress was curt and never returned to our table between the time she took our order until we were finished eating (a busser dropped off our food). Didn't refill our drinks until after we were thru with the meal. You sit so close to other tables, that it was impossible to block out the personal conversations on either side. The mindless thump-thump-thumping of some bad house music they pumped in to make the dark place even more hip just added to the tries-so-hard-to-be-cool vibe and just made the ambiance more chaotic.
Such an utter disappointment. Do yourself a favor and go elsewhere.

In the desert of downtown eating, this was an oasis.
a vegan, a vegetarian and 2 meat eaters, all enjoyed the selection and the ambiance. Each dish had extra accent points that made you feel this was a non-corporate special place.

First the good points: nice, cozy restaurant space with great atmosphere that seemed very promising when we first arrived. My food was tasty and the menu had a good selection. Not-so-good points: the service was among the worst I’ve ever experienced. Upon being seated at our table we sat for at least 15 minutes before anyone talked to us. A server finally rushed over to us and asked if we wanted our check. Confused, we said check? We just sat down. He then apologized and took our drink order. From that point on, a different server took our order and delivered our food, but was highly inattentive. My partner’s entree had a hair in it, so that ruined it for him. It’s a shame because the place could be better, but our experience was very poor.

Worst salad Nicoise ever. No flavor at all in the dressing, flavorless boiled potatoes and the tuna seemed like canned tuna. Overall a plate of beige. Also our two-top table was pushed so close to the tables next to us we could hear every word spoken by the people on either side of us and it felt like being sandwiched into the middle of a large communal table. Our server was great, but that could not make up for the seating/terrible food.

The food fell short and the servers were inexperienced. There was no flavor in the sandwich, and the bread was too thick to be able to bite into it.

Great atmosphere - I would certainly go back for drinks in the lounge.

This was my first time eating at Per Diem, and it was fine. Nothing overwhelming, but it was OK. I had the hamburger, and it was overdone -- I had asked for the rare side of medium rare, and it was not anywhere close to even medium. But my colleague enjoyed his tri-tip sandwich. It's a nice ambiance, and I'd try it again. But, there are many other restaurants I'd probably go to before this one....

We had a waiter that didn't seem to want to be there and that cam through in the service. This was my first time at Per Diem and will be my last. It's in a great location for a business lunch.

Cozy place, fantastic food & great service. I have a food allergy and the chef came out to talk with me personally to accommodate. The Short Rib was fantastic. Finished up with an Apple Tart that comes with a scoop of vanilla ice cream with a splash of caramel sauce. One of the best desserts I have ever eaten (and I eat out several times a week - a true foodie). Thank you for the experience! The restaurant is now in my special contacts list under SF YUM.

The ambience and the service were great, but the food kind of fell flat for me. The mushroom pasta was bland and it didn’t seem to go well with the wine they matched it with. Just in my opinion. I’d come back, but hopefully to try something better.

We had lunch. The menu had something for everyone. The tuna salad was good. The tri-tip sandwich was generous and tasty. We sat in the loft that had only two tables and allowed for easy conversation.. A diner may wish to ask for one of those tables if if or she wishes privacy.

Pro:
- nice, warm reception
- responsive service
- wonderful food. You have to try the Squid-ink Linguini, those are out-of-this-world tasty!

Con:
- sitting was kind of dense
(Still, I reserved table for 3 but we ended up 5 guys)

Bar tender was just nasty. For no reason. Messed up our reservation. Was so unwelcoming. Really ruined the entire experience. The rest of the staff did a great job and tried to turn things around. But unfortunately by then damage was done. I was entertaining clients that were in from out of town, had told them about this "amazing restaurant". And Per Diem just turned out to be embarrassing.

I went to Per Diem for dinner with a business colleague who was visiting from out of state. Downstairs was very noisy around the bar but the seating upstairs was nice and more conducive for a business conversation. The ambiance was very nice.
I had the squid ink pasta and my colleague had the mushroom pasta. We shared the hummus starter. The food was good, no complaints, but it was not great and SF is a city with a lot of places that offer 'great' in the same price range.
The service was not very attentive. Several times we had to try to get the attention of our server to place our order. No one came by to ask if we needed anything or how our meal was. It's nice not being interrupted every 5 minutes, but of course there is a balance between being harassed and ignored. We were mostly ignored.
All in all, not a terrible experience but not a memorable one either.

Initially, I was not dazzled by the limited menu choices at lunch, but what they offer is done well. A meatball appetizer was delicious, as was the tomato and watermelon salad. My companion was very pleased with her roast chicken, and I found my sliced tri-tip sandwich on rustic bread to be delicious. The generous sandwich came with caramelized onions, and a ramekin of potent horseradish. It was so big, half of it went home with me. The densely chocolate -y marquise, a rich cake slathered in whipped cream and served on a pool of raspberry sauce, is worth the indulgence.

Had a reservation but the table was not ready so they put us in their patio where the rug was filthy, it smelled like dirty old beer. We were the only ones on the patio and all we could here was loud machines turning on and off. The food was not good. I had the nicoise salad and the lettuce was wilted and brown - it just tasted old and quickly thrown together. My husband had the chicken sandwich and he said it was ok. Place is overpriced and will not return.

Great lunch restaurant in the middle of the downtown Financial District. My wife and I were celebrating our wedding anniversary and wanted a venue that was a step-up from the normal fare. From Per Diem's lunch specials, the steak, and the muscles/fries were excellent. We also ordered a watermelon and mozzarella salad which was refreshing and paired well with our meal.

Per Diem is a great restaurant for couples looking for a getaway from the hustle/bustle of downtown. We highly recommend it.

On Thursday I was trying to find a place near work to have lunch on Friday with a friend who was visiting from New York. Most places that take reservations have been booked up for the prime 12-1pm slots on a Friday, but I'm glad to find a 12.45pm at Per Diem, which I have walked past many times but haven't tried. They would only sit us when both people our party of 2 have arrived, but otherwise the service was fairly quick. I had the mussels and fries, which was pretty delicious and the fries were generous. However, unlike most other places I was not given an empty plate or bowl to put the empty mussel shells. They also didn't give my friend a spoon when they served her the soup she ordered, though they brought one pretty quickly once she asked for one. Little things here and there that made me dock off 2 stars for the service. Otherwise, it's a pretty good place for a business lunch in FiDi.
