Waited very long time for entrees, with little update from server. All other tables came and went... were gone when we were finally served our meals. No offer for any adjustment. Disappointing, but the setting and surroundings were enjoyable.
We chose Per Diem because of the location and the mostly favorable reviews. Unfortunately, we were very disappointed with our experience. Our group of six was seated upstairs, which was quieter than the downstairs tables (which was nice), and we were happy with the overall ambience. But things went downhill from there. Probably the biggest disappointment was the food. With the exception of the fried artichoke appetizer, I don't think anyone in our group liked the food. Additionally, the service was poor and we had to remind the server(s) again and again about simple requests (for drink refills and bread, for example). All in all, a tremendous disappointment. We won't be going back any time soon.
I have gone to Per Diem maybe 4 or 5 times and it has been a winner every time. Have gone a few times for a business lunch in a small group; once for an office going-away type event for a larger group; and this time for a lunch with friends. They both had not been here before and both liked it a lot.
Per Diem use to be one of my favorite/go-to restaurant in SF. Because it had everything, the nice people, easy reservation system/availability, classy ambiance and good food. But my last time there, I've had much better food. My mussel dish had overfried/not fresh fries. And the mussels were a little on the stinky side. The flat bread and pizza had no flavor and left very little to be desired. The apple crumble dessert was tasty and butter. Overall, quite disappointed -
especially I highly recommended the place to a group of new comers and raved highly about it. And the food impressed no one.
Lovely environment with good wait staff. Positive experience for sure. Thanks.
The food and atmosphere was really good. The only complaint would be the service. Our waiter never even asked how our food was.
Great lunch spot in Financial District, excellent salads with creative ingredients
Good lunch spot. Pretty easy to get a reservation. Interesting decor inside. The seating upstairs is nice. Comfy booths. Good food, fair prices
I gathered my 80 year old mom and some of her friends for a birthday lunch here. Not a good choice for a special occasion. We had to wait in a chilly entry way for half an hour for our table. The table was up a steep flight of stairs. The room was very dark. Most disappointing of all was the food--worst Salade Nicoise ever! Canned tuna, tired vegetables and we had to ask for dressing because we couldn't detect any.
How could I have lived in SF forever and never known about this restaurant until now? They have been open 5 years and I never knew! It is fabulous--the food is creative but without pretense--the ambience is warm, the upstairs loft area was quieter--we were able to have a conversation without shouting at each other. And a terrific waiter.
Also great drinks menu.
I would recommend and would definitely return.
Food was good- not the greatest but solid. Drinks and staff were great.
Bar seating is too crowded
I do not know the best places for SF business lunch so I went to Yelp for help. This place had decent reviews. Upon entering, i knew I picked the wrong place. The place looks like a restaurant from Western movies. I was looking for table cloths and a more business friendly environment. My guest loved his hamburger and I hated my beet salad. It had a weird dressing and I could hardly finish 1/4 of it. The waitress was super accommodating and had great attitude. If you like a beer and a good hamburger, do not hesitate to go to this place. But if you are having a serious business meeting, avoid.
Good food. Casual, upscale. Friendly, attentive staff.
This is my new favorite place! The ambiance is great, with warm leather banquettes and books on the shelf. It feels like a British gentlemen's club. The food is delicious and the appetizers are substantial enough to make a light dinner if eating a large main course is too much. The bar is great and the "Manhattan Project" approach to creating your own version of this iconic cocktail is clever and fun. The wine list also offers some great choices. This has become a regular spot that I go to with one of my long-term and very dear friends. It's perfect for a great meal and a good conversation.
Bar scene is lively during happy hour so noise level for Mon-Fri dinner will be high
The server, the atmosphere, the draught beer, happy hours are excellent. The food is good. Overall, superb!
Great place to meet for a casual lunch business meeting
Great food, especially the buratta appetizer! Highly recommended!
My boyfriend and i went here before a concert and we had an amazing time. The food l, drinks and service were fantastic. We would totally come eat here again
One member of our party ordered a pasta dish. It was under-cooked and tasteless. But the resturant made good on another entree at no cost and offered a free glass of wine.
Per Diem has a beautiful interior -- somewhat eclectic. It's noisy and bustling at lunchtime, and I was visiting with an old friend, so I was a bit concerned about being able to hear, but we were seated upstairs in the back and that worked well. Our waitress was friendly and efficient and picked up on our wish to talk and reminisce. I appreciated that she didn't rush us. We had the mussels, which were very good (as were the French fries that accompanied them. In the past I've had flatbread and soup. In my experience, Per Diem combines a business lunch with special occasion.
My wife and I ate here in a recent trip to SF. Our table was not ready when we arrived--a 30 minute delay before we were seated--but the manager was apologetic and comped our cocktails and appetizer. We loved everything we were served. The noise level was pretty high the night we dined (a private party was next to us), but overall we were very pleased with our experience at Per Diem. We will return!
Great food but rude server
Celebrated a co-workers retirement with other co-workers. The tuna and chicken salads were beautifully presented. These items and the hamburger and chicken sandwiches were all tasty. Everyone enjoyed their meal and the service was excellent!
Hadn't been to Per Diem in awhile so it was nice to return with my Mom and a couple of friends for lunch. The service was great and the food was delicious. The kale and chicken salad and the chicken sandwich were both great! Highly recommend both of those options.
We had such a lovely dinner last Saturday at Per Diem. We were in town for a brief time, wanted a nice dinner without paying exorbitant money, and found it all at Per Diem. It was a nice, unassuming place, with one of the best waiters we've had in months in our travels in other cities.
Came here for lunch with a childhood friend. We work within blocks of each other but haven't had a lot of time between our busy schedules. Pleasantly surprised that this place offered a great meal and wonderful service! Will definitely return!
Really enjoyed the meatballs and the avocado toast!
This is a favorite lunch spot for a coworker and me. We like to celebrate there and we are liberal in our reasons to celebrate!
Delicious food (best nicoise I've ever had). Manager Devon was outstanding. Beautiful restaurant.
Great ambiance, wine list and cocktails. The short rib was delicious as was the chocolate mousse cake. Great place to meet for happy hour. Will definitely go again!
The burger and kale salad were the perfect paleo lunch combo.
the food was some of the worst ive had in sf. the burrata flatbread had no flavor and the burrata was fully burnt. the brussels sprouts were overcooked and also flavorless. the cheese and meat board was ok but not great. pretty disappointing.
Celebrated birthday for friend, 96 y/o. Staff were wonderful helping our group to enjoy the occasion and make it special. Kudos to them. Much appreciated.
They were out of the tri-tip sandwich at 1:15 PM. Bummer.
The Salmon Nicoise Salad and Bacon Cheeseburger were amazing! One of the best burgers in the area hands down.
The tables were really close together upstairs, but it turned out not to be a problem.
Really attentive and funny without being annoying. I ordered a lemonade and it never came so when I mentioned I wanted to make sure it wasn't on the bill, the server answered back "We won't be charging you for it then. Would you like a lemonade to go - on the house?" I thought this was a great and quick response, but I didn't take the lemonade.
Prices were a bit high, but the quality of food and service made up for it. This is a great spot for business lunches or special occasions, but a bit too fancy for everyday lunch.
Service left a little to be desired, but was overall fairly attentive and courteous. The portions were perfect, with apps perfect for sharing. The potatoes with my sole were pretty overdone/starchy, but didn't distract from the great flavor of the sole and puree. The apple tart and creme brulee were excellent for dessert and I was glad I only had bites of my friends' because I could've gladly eaten the whole thing myself! Beautiful space, great meal, would recommend this place and would definitely go back.
The table was ready on time, waiter was beyond great, ambiance is nice casual, food was good, and price was great.
I informed the waiter I was celiac and asked what my options were, he suggested a few options and mentioned the Petrole sole fish was really good and nicely done and confirmed that it was gluten free including the sauces and sides it came with, however, the dish was extremely disappointing, both the fish and potatoes were overdone and there was no celeary root purée, sauce gribiche or any other seasoning on the food. I didn't remember what it came with and checked when I got home later. It was not a fulfilling meal at all and for $27 I would expect a bit more attention to detail and explanation if sides and seasonings are to be removed.
