Penumbra Restaurant & Wine Bar Ratings and Reviews
This may be one of the worst restaurants we have ever been to in Chicago. Cheese plate starter; four cheeses, all pretty much tasteless. I had the worst ribeye ever, my wife had the most fishy salmon that she could not even finish. On a positive note our server was amazing. Great service but very lousy food. When in food heaven like Chicago just about any place is better.
I really liked the quality of the food. Tried two of the steak plates and was impressed with the flavor and spices! Scallops were very good, but one of the 5 was a little overcooked, but otherwise the combination of flavors on them were great. Also good to try their cocktails
Our first time here, thought we’d try something new and were pleasantly surprised. Had the jalapeño shrimp appetizer and it was great, just the right amount of kick. I had the ribeye and my date had the flank steak and we shared a little of both as they were both delicious. The salad was a nice combo of fruit, greens and veggies with a light citrus dressing. Very happy with the food and the ambiance was very elegant and relaxing.
My husband and I went with a friend of ours to check it out. It's a little Misleading up front if you come during the week especially because the front has a bar and a few seats but most of the seating is in the back so when you 1st walk in, in you might think it is not very crowded .I believe on the weekends they are slammed with people but during the week when it is not as busy can't you might get that impression. when you get in the back ,that's where all the seating is. It is a lot of fabric and couches and is very kind of pretty and romantic .It is definitely great for a date and you feel like you've discovered something in the neighborhood that you normally would not find. The food was decent and good and our server was very very attentive and did a great job. The owner definitely worked the floor and was a very nice .The couches are set in sort of private little areas with curtains and it's very romantic but also could be really fun for groups having caught tales. I guess my only complaint was it closes at 10 during the week and 11 on the weekends. I would definitely like to go back with a friend or by myself, and see how it feels to sit at the bar and have drinks or snacks. The night we were there it felt like it was basically all couples. But for a wine person like myself would be great to go get a glass of wine at the bar after work, etc. It is a great addition to the dining scene in Logan in that it's more romantic than hipster. You can feel that is owned by a person , not a group or corporation. The food was decent the price point was good and even though I didn't know a lot of the wines on the list the one we had was excellent for the price. I would definitely go back
We are so happy we discovered this incredibly charming and inviting restaurant. Don't be fooled when you see the bar area -- there's more to this place and not just in terms of decor. All of the food is out-of-this-world good, and the service is friendly, warm and welcoming. Thank you to Salvador, Rita and our very skilled bartender! We thoroughly enjoyed our evening and our dinner. We will be back!
Our service was great, and the ambiance was wonderful and romantic. My wine (malbec) was delicious, as was our dessert (flan). I was really disappointed in the quality of the cuts of our steaks, both of which were over seasoned within an inch of their lives. I would definitely go back for wine and dessert, but I would pass on dinner.
What a gem. Warm and genuine service (thank you Sebastian). Small but balanced menu choices. Same for interesting wine list. Every bite was flavorful and skillful balance. On top of that the ambience is incredibly quiet and enjoyable.
Family run and we were lucky to find it. Going back soon!
Everything about our dinner was outstanding. The service was perfect, knowledgeable while also being unobtrusive. The moment we walked in the door we were greeted warmly and that warmth permeated the entire night. While I'm not looking for attention in a restaurant by the owner, maitre'd, or anyone, this was real and felt good. The food was excellent. Everything we had was perfectly prepared and presented. There are good options for meat, fish and salads without having a menu that is overwhelming.
I can't say enough about this restaurant and will definitely be back.
While visiting Chicago this past weekend for my boyfriend's birthday I booked Penumbra because it had excellent reviews and we could get a decent steak dinner for a lot less than some other spots would charge. We were in love from start to finish. The owner personally delivered food to our table and checked in with us several times. The host and our waiter were attentive to drinks and such as well. We had drinks, an appetizer, two steak dinners (absolutely delicious!) and our bill was less than $90. Highly, highly recommend!
I've been here many times and can't say enough good things about it. From the moment you walk in the door it's a wonderful experience. The staff and owner are friendly, the wine infused cocktails are fab, the shrimp is delicious, the desserts perfectly sized and balanced, and the atmosphere great for intimate or large scale of which I've done both. A gem. Highly recommend.
We love this restaurant. The restaurant is nicely decorated, warm and relaxing. All menu choices that we had were superb in both presentation and taste. We shared the ceviche and crab cakes for appetizers, and the Creole Jalapeno shrimp main course was delicious. We shared a warm chocolate cake for dessert- also yummy! The servers and service was nice, not rushed, and it was quiet enough that we could have a nice conversation during dinner. We will definitely return!
