Had a lovely evening. The food was all delicious and the service was great. Everyone who worked there was extremely nice and attentive.
We will definitely back. A charming neighborhood restaurant.
Lovely neighborhood place with a cozy bar and sumptuous dining room. Curtained nooks make it ideal for a date night. While the lighting was low, we figured it made us more attractive and they did provide flashlights to read the menu. It was easy to have a nice conversation as it wasn't very noisy. The food was good and reasonably priced. The cocktails were outstanding.
Great service and the food was delicious. All of the dishes were well seasoned and flavorful. The hostess made great recommendations regarding both food and wine to compliment certain dishes. The interior is also very unique with private cabanas for more intimacy if dining with a significant other.
Great value with excellent food and nice quiet dark ambiance.
I have been to Penumbra several times and it is always delicious! I highly recommend any of the shrimp dishes, the scallops and the lobster - they are all great! This is a good spot to go for dates or with family. Filling meals for the prices and all of the dishes are so flavorful. Logan Square has so many great restaurants and Penumbra does not disappoint!
We celebrated a birthday. The restaurant is beautiful and we enjoyed our meals. The shadow shrimp was outstanding.
Had a special guest and wanted to take them somewhere special. This was the perfect venue: quiet, intimate and the food, drinks and service was impeccable.
Very good food at a great price point.
This is such a great addition to Logan Square! Unassuming decor and space, the front is the cozy/loungey bar area then you walk through a threshold and enter the dining room. The food was absolutely delicious (my daughter had the steak and I had the chicken with herb goat cheese cream), the drinks (coconut mojito and caipirinha) were very tasty and well balanced/mixed, the flan was also delicious (a bit of a butterscotch flavor to it). And prices are neighborhood friendly / reasonable. Can't wait to go back!
Always excellent. The ribeye and the shadow shrimp was so succulent. It’s an undiscovered gem.
We went to Penumbra for the first time with another couple. We had read the outstanding reviews but were still concerned that we would be disappointed. The food surpassed our expectations- everything was delicious and we were delighted at the price point. We are frequent diners in the river north and Randolph street area and are not easily impressed but Penumbra hit the mark. Our friends were equally impressed. Will definitely be returning.
We scheduled dinner with friends and Penumbra was in between our homes. We were first to arrive and ordered a drink at the bar- the bartender, Amber, was fantastic (knowledgeable about the menu, helpful in pricing guidance, and funny). Our friends arrived and we had a lovely meal (the soup they provided for the amuse was really delicious). We settled up, said our goodbyes, and left. On the drive home, we received a call from the restaurant— they told us there had been a mistake on their end and they had undercharged us. They mixed up our check with the table next to us, and our check was actually more. Could we provide a credit card number? I was completely taken aback by this request. 1. I had no way to prove the veracity of this supposed mix up. 2. We weren’t even with our friends anymore, with whom we’d split the bill. 3. As a restauranteur, if you discover a mistake like this, you do not relay it to your customer.
I should have hung up but I actually dug my credit card out and tried to pay my (original) half of the bill again. The restaurant had voided the entire bill prior to calling me, so now me trying to re-pay a bill I’d paid 15 minutes ago flagged my credit card company— which created another hassle. The whole experience left a bad taste in my mouth about Penumbra, and cancelled out the otherwise delicious experience. At best it was poor customer service— at worst it feels like sketchy business practices are going on. Penumbra mentioned that this is not the first time this situation has happened to them, and my word of advice is: the next time this happens, if they want to keep a patron, keep the mistake to themselves.
Food and service were everything we expected, very pleased!
Great atmosphere and service
Rita the owner had reserved us a private table with long sheer curtains around our area. The chefs special that night was excellent as well as the crab cakes.
Food is all fresh and high quality and very reasonable. Great value and fun place for a date especially if you get one of the semi private tables with the drapery dividers. Great gem in Logan Square.
Great romantic vibe. They have options where you can sit at a table or be closed off by curtains on sofas. The food was great and equally portioned where I didn’t leave feeling super full. The prices were pretty good too.
Great creative flavorful dishes highly recommend for dinner
Second time having dinner at Penumbra, like before it was a great experience. The restaurant has a perfect setting for a nice intimate dinner that is well complimented by a wonderful menu. The food and the service were excellent, attentive staff and an overall experience that did will keep me going back.
Very charming atmosphere. Great steaks at reasonable price. Perfect place to celebrate a special occasion.
At first glance the restaurant seems tiny because of the location and the first few tables up front but as they take you to the back the inside is beautiful. Greatly decorated and perfect for a romantic date. The hostess was really nice and our waitress was great. Went with my SO and we loved it. Recommended it to our closest friends for a date night. We will come back.
Wonderful. The menu is not vast but everything on it is done to perfection. Small place with workers who care. A definite must try.
Wow- this was a surprising and magical place. The food was delicious and the ambiance is subtle and beautiful, with shimmering, long curtains and soft glowing lights. It is a special place both in terms of the food and in the feeling of the space. Our waiter was also extremely attentive and made the experience all the more special. Highly recommend
Luv this place , you gotta try prime rib and cocconut mojitos...the best , just talking about it makes me wanna go back and eat again
This may be one of the worst restaurants we have ever been to in Chicago. Cheese plate starter; four cheeses, all pretty much tasteless. I had the worst ribeye ever, my wife had the most fishy salmon that she could not even finish. On a positive note our server was amazing. Great service but very lousy food. When in food heaven like Chicago just about any place is better.
I really liked the quality of the food. Tried two of the steak plates and was impressed with the flavor and spices! Scallops were very good, but one of the 5 was a little overcooked, but otherwise the combination of flavors on them were great. Also good to try their cocktails
Our first time here, thought we’d try something new and were pleasantly surprised. Had the jalapeño shrimp appetizer and it was great, just the right amount of kick. I had the ribeye and my date had the flank steak and we shared a little of both as they were both delicious. The salad was a nice combo of fruit, greens and veggies with a light citrus dressing. Very happy with the food and the ambiance was very elegant and relaxing.
My husband and I look forward to getting some adult time. Love coming to this restaurant. The ambiance is just what we are looking for. Food is wonderful and service is great! Great wine selection and desserts are so yummy!
I recommend everything on the menu. My favorite is the steak.
My husband and I went with a friend of ours to check it out. It's a little Misleading up front if you come during the week especially because the front has a bar and a few seats but most of the seating is in the back so when you 1st walk in, in you might think it is not very crowded .I believe on the weekends they are slammed with people but during the week when it is not as busy can't you might get that impression. when you get in the back ,that's where all the seating is. It is a lot of fabric and couches and is very kind of pretty and romantic .It is definitely great for a date and you feel like you've discovered something in the neighborhood that you normally would not find. The food was decent and good and our server was very very attentive and did a great job. The owner definitely worked the floor and was a very nice .The couches are set in sort of private little areas with curtains and it's very romantic but also could be really fun for groups having caught tales. I guess my only complaint was it closes at 10 during the week and 11 on the weekends. I would definitely like to go back with a friend or by myself, and see how it feels to sit at the bar and have drinks or snacks. The night we were there it felt like it was basically all couples. But for a wine person like myself would be great to go get a glass of wine at the bar after work, etc. It is a great addition to the dining scene in Logan in that it's more romantic than hipster. You can feel that is owned by a person , not a group or corporation. The food was decent the price point was good and even though I didn't know a lot of the wines on the list the one we had was excellent for the price. I would definitely go back
A pleasant Logan Square surprise that does a nice job at their price point. Some interesting cocktails and a reasonable wine list. The decorating is a plus.
Loved it, the whole experience was comfortable and unique. The food was great and worth the price and the service was awesome
We love this place. Only negative was when the waitress forgot to ask us if we wanted more wine with the steak.
We are so happy we discovered this incredibly charming and inviting restaurant. Don't be fooled when you see the bar area -- there's more to this place and not just in terms of decor. All of the food is out-of-this-world good, and the service is friendly, warm and welcoming. Thank you to Salvador, Rita and our very skilled bartender! We thoroughly enjoyed our evening and our dinner. We will be back!
Sebastian was an amazing server - very knowledgeable and polite. made the experience that much better
Our service was great, and the ambiance was wonderful and romantic. My wine (malbec) was delicious, as was our dessert (flan). I was really disappointed in the quality of the cuts of our steaks, both of which were over seasoned within an inch of their lives. I would definitely go back for wine and dessert, but I would pass on dinner.
One of the nicest dinners we've had in a long time — and we DO eat out adventurously and somewhat frequently. Service was attentive and warm, food was amazing and portions were perfectly sized, cocktails were exceptionally good.
Nice menu, good food, pleasant server not large portions, needed a little filler when I got home
Wow, awesome and reasonably priced. We split the Latin lobster and steak, outstanding.
Amazing service and food. Owner was very nice and made sure we enjoyed our meal. Food was creative and unique, and everything was phenomenal. Can't wait to go back!
Best steak I have had in Chicago. Lighting is romantic
