Awesome! Food was excellent, service was friendly, ambiance was lovely.
I would love to be able to recommend that people go to Almond & Oak. I look forward to the change of name being reflected on the website, signage, etc. The meal was delicious and the service was fine. It is a loud place to begin with but when the combo started playing, it was impossible to have a conversation withou shouting. Luckily, we were done with our meal by then.
Fabulous hamburgers and French fries! The change of name to Almond and Oak will be confusing, not because it will be new and different, but because, while I eat almonds, I do not eat acorns.
Loved this place! Fresh food that was delicious, with portion sizes that were neither skimpy nor giant. Wonderful timing of the service as well, we did not feel rushed at all as we were there to catch up with friends. The beignets were delicious, as was the benedict, the shrimp and polenta (thanks for NOT putting cheese in these grits btw! I love cheesy grits but not with seafood!), and the chive scrambled eggs were all fantastic. And the cocktails were again very delicious and a reasonable size! Such a fun spot. We will absolutely be back!
Food is amazing, service is very friendly. Wish the amount of food was closer to a full sized meal but, that depends on what you order I guess. I ordered the Gnocchi which was amazing but, I was still hungry after. It’s a little silly to spend so much and then have to find something else to eat a little later.
I visited Penrose, now Almond and Oak, for a special occasion dinner. A friend and I shared several dishes, including calamari, fish, brussel sprouts, and broccoli. The servings were generous and we had enough left over to take home and enjoy the next day. We made room for two scrumptious desserts : an olive oil orange sponge cake and a chocolate mocha souffle as well as a couple of mixed drinks. The wait staff was excellent knowing the ingredients of dishes and eager to please. Parking, even on a Saturday evening, was surprisingly easy with a parking lot across the street. The only down point was the noise level; with nameless music blaring in the background, high ceilings and a restaurant full of diners, it was difficult to hear my friend only 6 inches away. Nevertheless, I would return in a minute and highly recommend Penrose, aka Almond and Oak.
Hadn’t been here since new ownership, and the food was better than ever! So good. We will be going back soon. And excellent service as always. Our waiter even remembered us.
the space is awesome and we got to experience a mariachi band as well. All the service staff is personable and the food is really consistent. one of my favorite venues in Oakland
Awesome flavors and fantastic ambience. First time trying the deserts (orange olive oil sponge cake) and it was magical.
The food is creative and delicious. Good sized-portions. Wonderful staff. This is my favorite restaurant in Oakland.
With the food being so delicious I'd expect the customer service to be better. Not sure how closely the host and the servers work together but it seems like there is a disconnect. I had the understanding that making a reservation via OpenTable meant there would be a table available for you. Upon arrival, I was waiting longer than anticipated. On the plus side, Penrose had taken into account the order details I made on OpenTable. Water and coffee refills were very difficult to get.
Good food but inconsistent on each visit. The bacon flavor this weekend was odd. Still, I hope they gain some consistency in quality and preparation when the restaurant changes hands to the head chef. The ambience is super nice. Nice servers but they tend to disappear during busier times.
Great food, great service, lovely atmosphere. A reliable place for dinner at the bar or for out of town guests.
Excellent food. Slower than usual service but we weren’t in a hurry and it was a slow night.
They have live jazz every Sunday from 8pm- 10pm. Everything was awesome, but the music was loud so if conversation is important, avoid the jazz, and go back to hear it another time!
Looking forward to returning soon!!
Wonderful food and service!! Amazing drinks. Love this place.
Very helpful server. A Tuesday night and it was packed. Always a good sign. The fish stew was fresh and delicious. If I lived in Oakland I’d be a regular like my friends who we went with are.
Best brunch in Oakland!
Interesting good food, good drinks and a nice ambience but a bit loud when crowded. The staff is friendly and the food well prepared.
The Best Burger and Fries. The crunchy sweet pickled cucumber was delightful! Who needs tomato slices? Great Service!
Everything was excellent and when I asked for a recommendation from our server they were helpful. I when with their recommendations and it was perfect.
The cocktails are outstanding. The vibe on a Sunday night with a jazz combo...nice surprise. The risotto and seafood stew were tasty as was the squid and burrata apps. Can’t wait to come back
Excellent service. Excellent breakfast pastries. . .particularly enjoyed the ham and cheese croissant. Great food. Such a beautiful space. So glad it got taken over by someone who obviously loves it.
Good time at Penrose for girlfriend’s casual brunch. Waiter was pleasant, efficient and allowed us to enjoy one another’s company. We arrived ahead of our reservation and although they were busy, we were seated early.
great staff, service, and food! will definitely go again
I wish I could offer a higher rating to the ambiance and food! Great place for a casual and even romantic date night with food to match
Great ambiance, attentive service, fun atmosphere and good food.
Everything about this place was amazing. Service food and cocktails were out of this world. Our server Leticia was phenomenal and patient. Will be back soon.
We come here from San Jose for birthdays, brunch and dinners. Always worth the trip! Everyone is very nice and of course the food is fantastic!
service was slow, food was good, not great... drink options somewhat limited... more sparkling wine options for saturday brunch please. cool looking place, people super nice...just not thrilled with it.
Love how Penrose changes menus regularly. The offerings are always a surprise, such as calamari with harissa chickpeas. Brussels Sprouts with pomegranate seeds and apples. Some of the best cocktails around.
Since Rico took over the food has just gotten better and better. He is putting his stamp on the place and he has the freedom to do that here that he did not fully have at Flora. The results are impressive and the vibe is also great - the Sunday night jazz jam session is a real treat.
It took ten minutes to get service and water after being seated. It’s so dark you need a flashlight to read the menu. And then there was a band, so all conversation stopped. The food was great, especially the Brussels sprouts!
Music a tad too loud. A little hipster Oakland unappealing vibe but very good service. Good bourbon and rye. Not a place we’d frequent - we prefer Shakewell nearby.
Mostly good. The pork was fatty and the oysters should not have been served. But gnocchi was excellent and crab cakes were very good. The restaurant week deal was nice but seemed to only offer the less popular choices
Every thing was great
Service was slow fir ordering initial drinks. The server did not caution the table that the vodka tonic drink would not be ‘normal’. Had to return the drinks. Missed capturing appetizer requests, didn’t repeat to confirm order. Overpriced. Good ambience and energy.
