To craft its menu of food and drinks united by one common philosophy - American sensibility joined with American seasonality - Chef Jeff Tunks drew on his first name partnerships with the best local farmers and artisanal purveyors...or he just makes it himself.
Burnished copper lighting, leather sling chairs and salvaged woods provide a warm footing for this showcase of American tavern food at its best.
When I make a reservation through Open Table, I should not have to confirm in a follow-up phone call from the restaurant -- especially when the restaurant name and number are blocked on my cellphone, which means I won't answer it. I then have to look up the number to find out who was calling me.
Mothers' day was a hit. Both my wife and mother had a great time and Chef Malcolm and his staff were able to accommodate my wife's vegan dietary restrictions. Our waiter Jordan was attentive and patient at the same time.
It was our first time going there on Mother's Day. It was not busy at all, plenty of tables open no waiting. We ordered Steak and Eggs. The food came out cold, the eggs looked like powder eggs. They took our plates back in less than two minutes it came back to us with brown ontop of the eggs food still not warm. We spoke to the manager he said this is the best it will get do you want to change your dish? We got up and left. It was hardly anyone in there for the food to be cold. The steak came out sliced into pieces with some sauce on it. Not a good look.
Way too loud for pleasant conversation
it was alright at best. way more staff than customers when we were there, but it was loud...
Delicious food. Bloody Mary could use some work. Mimosas were a very generous pour. Great atmosphere and great little find just outside of China Town.
Very loud but it was for a playoff game. Service was extremely slow and our server was scarce. Looked like they were shorthanded. My salad arrived slightly limp and with no dressing. Should not have left the kitchen like that. Not the best visit but we will still go back.
Great option when taking in an event at Capital One Arena. Nice selection of Craft Beer and Wine. Awesome appetizers and good food that is above bar food, but still reasonably priced for an evening out with Friends before or after a game or concert.
Water to me within seconds of seating. Lots of people watching the game and close to the Arena. No food HH Specials and the service was really slow after the initial waters. Drink specials were good.
Nice sports bar with good food choices. They have a good selector draft beers and cocktails as well. Expect it to be a bit noisy if there is a major or local sporting event on TV.
We were very disappointed with the service and quality of the food. When we first started going there, there were healthy options that were delicious, now the menu is greasy bar food. They were understaffed on a game day. We will choose other options before the caps game. Such a shame, used to go frequently.
Grabbing a bite before the Washington Ballet, with a packed crowd of NBA fans. Server was awesome, getting our drinks and entrees out quickly. Twelve Buck Chuck burger and seafood Cobb salad were well above expected “bar food” quality.
Burgers were great, as usual, and the staff does an excellent job knowing when we're on a schedule for the Caps game.
Great atmosphere and friendly staff. Food and beverages check all the boxes. Sad that the Wizards season is ending so soon! After Tuesday, see you in 6 months.
Great service/food and drinks! Would definitely recommend.
Great layout, ambience and overall vibe. Beer list on tap is more than usual. Fish tacos in particular were well done with a light batter and perfect crispness. Caught Happy Hour on a Sunday before Elite 8 game at Capital One Arena next door, what's not to like?!
Great food and good brunch deal. I would go back again.
Went to watch the Sweet Sixteen games so energy was high. Happy hour runs all night so that was fun. Loved the leather booths and even the tables were comfortable. Food was better than average but not mind boggling.
We went to dinner here prior to a recent Caps game. The beer list is extensive and that's where it ends. The service was sub-par with drinks taking about 15 minutes to be served. Also, the appetizer was served after the main course arrived. The food was OK but not up to many places nearby. I doubt we go back unless it is for a beer or two.
Great before and after Caps games! We went before a Sunday game, had a reservation right at opening. They got us seated and fed in under 15 minutes. Very impressive! Great brunch menu - the cinnamon sugar baguette with strawberry butter and the french toast bites were delicious! Loved the Chinatown hot toddy as well. If I wasn't from out of town this would be my before and after game spot.
Good beer choices. Great prices. Hamburgers hit the spot. Good atmosphere.
Great place. A little loud, but I’m a little old.
Chorizo nachos short on chorizo. Not much difference in taste between spinach artichoke and tzakiki dips. Good beer choice. Waiter wasn’t attentive.
Been going there for at least five years. Always had a good experience. First time in the dining room. Service was non existent. Food was luke warm at best. No attention to detail from the wait staff
Great burgers. Appreciated the early seating ahead of the basketball game. Always a lively atmosphere.
Everything was great. Noise level was high, but, after all, it WAS happy hour, and people were happy!
We'll be back!
Our large group of loyal Wizards fans was very taken care of. The burgers were great. The happy hour beverages are the best bargain in the neighborhood. The server was exceptionally friendly. It's our favorite game-day place.
Sat at the bar, bartender didn’t come up to us for over 20 minutes. It wasn’t busy either. And same thing when we tried to get a 2nd drink
Great spot just outside of the Capital One Arena. Good food and drinks at good (happy hour) prices. Group of four adults got out at ~$130 with tip. Staff was very attentive, yet avoided being intrusive.
The food at Penn Commons was delicious. We had the Blackened Fresh Catch and a burger for dinner last night. The only downside to the evening was that the drinks seemed watered down.
Excellent time before the CAPS game.
Went to brunch before an afternoon hockey game. Service was very good and the staff were both helpful and cheerful. Food was great. I would highly recommend.
We will definitely be back. Go to Caps games often and this is a perfect place to go before the game.
The lunch specials are a great value. The bbq sandwich was bland. Needed more sauce. Still, a good spot to hit. It has a good vibe.
I was so excited to come to Penn Commons for their bottomless brunch deal, which I have taken advantage of in the past. However, I was extremely disappointed in the entire meal. Our server was extremely unfriendly and inattentive, and she did not explain to us their complicated menu when we sat down. It was not possible to simply get bottomless mimosas with the purchase of one entree, we were required to participate in the pre-fixe menu. I hope they can improve their service soon because the restaurant has a fun atmosphere!
Service was mediocre and food was worse - not worth the price.
Good place to go before going to Capital One Arena. Food is great, drinks and beer selection are extensive. We had a great time and absolutely LOVED the pretzel baguette. My boyfriend said his burger was one of the best he had ever had! If you are there during happy hour and right before a caps game (like we were) it is definitely loud, but in a lively and fun way. We love coming here before games!
We only go there before a hockey game, and it's always full of Caps fans. Better to make a reservation on game nights, it gets very crowded. Food is always excellent. Service is always good, especially considering how crowded it is on game night. We usually order 2 drinks each as soon as we sit down, because it can take awhile.
Went to Penn Commons before a Capitals game. Had a reservation which I reccomend. The service was quick and friendly. Menu variety is better than most bar food. We had both of the burgers and the shrimp and grits in our group. Everyone loved their meal. Super impressive how they served the large crowd with plenty of time for us to get to the game and get through security. Would go again.
