This is one of the best places to get Oyster Shots in DC!
So the place has moved to a mobile app form of ordering and paying, probably a layover from Covid and due to short staff. Thing is, the place and food has better than that. And I never did find a thing on the app to ask someone to refill the water glass. Took forever to wave someone down.
Love the contactless ordering. Definitely makes things easier for both customer and restaurant! Hope it doesn’t go away once things become more normal again . Food was solid, as always.
The food and service was excellent yet our bill was so high for what we ordered. Not necessarily complaining yet it makes it challenging to dine there regularly.
They’re working out the contactless ordering, but someone coming to the table to at least first explain the process and noting you can keep the tab open between orders (or on a sign) would be very helpful.
I will never go to DC without eating at Pearl Dive Oyster Palace. Oysters were hot, fresh, and priced really well. My wife and I loved it!!!
I wrote a very comprehensive review, but this site lost it, so here's a recap:
- app ordering payment system is lousy - complex, confusing, and time-consuming. You have less service and spend your time doing the waiter's work instead of enjoying your company. You can't change or add to your order. All items are brought at once, no regard for courses. And it makes you pay AND TIP in ADVANCE - and for virtually no service.
- mentioning this to the waiter got a response of "that's how it is."
- no a/c, so hot and stuffy.
- tables sticky.
- I've had better experiences at cafeterias and at home, which is where I'd rather dine than at Pearl Dive.
PS - Opentable requires you to select a "recommendation" in order to submit a review, so I'll choose the least-positive of the options. There was NOTHING positive with our experience there.
I LOVE Pearl Dive, but this visit was disappointing. From the wait for drinks to the not great food to the mediocre or worse service, I was let down by the restaurant I tell everyone about as having the best burger in DC.
First, they push QR code ordering. To me that's akin to ordering from UberEats. I go to a restaurant for the restaurant experience. I want to chat w/the server & get some recommendations. When you order QR-style and "start a tab", it makes it significantly less interactive & cheap feeling & I don't know what or if to tip in that situation. Nevertheless, I asked for menus & they obliged. Here's the problem though.
I think the servers prefer the QR & drop on the table & that's basically what we had, w/the only difference being we had menus, & part of why this visit was so sad.
We ordered 4 drinks for the table. The 1st one was dropped on the table by some guy palming several other drinks for other tables. Then, a couple of minutes later 2 other drinks were dropped by our server. THEN, after 8 minutes (I timed) I was finally able to get our server's attention to ask him about our missing 4th drink. 5 minutes after that someone else dropped it at our table, but offered the alcoholic drink to the underage person at our table. Ugh. Now we had 3 watery drinks & a fresh one...which basically symbolized our entire meal.
Our server was noticeably absent, except for the way too infrequent check-ins. We had to ask for bread twice....shouldn't have to even once. The bread was the best part of the meal...hot & fresh. The rest...meh. Our oysters were super gritty. Our dive burgers were not cooked to order nor was the bacon crisp. It was undercooked & super limp. The buns are new from my other visits & seeded now & super firm. In short, this best burger in DC fell far short of what it used to be.
Unfortunately, our table wasn't the only not digging the PD. We could hear another say to the manager, "We are very dissatisfied". Us too, my friend. Us too. :(
Monday night is half-price oyster night! The Newfoundland oysters were awesome.
I go to Pearl Dive once a month, this time the service was not what it is always like. It was slow. The server gave us the oysters and not a word of which is which.
We had to ask for silverware/utensils, napkins.
The food as usual very good and the drinks were good.
Excellent service, great food, friendly & courteous servers
Food was delicious and drinks were well made. Came for happy hour and truly enjoyed ourselves. Will certainly come again!
The food was simply great and as far as the human service went, it was good too. It’s just that the software/program for ordering food wasn’t working so well. In general, it is better to have a waiter whom one could ask for recommendations/suggestions etc.
The usual wonderful and very fresh seafood. The new online ordering system is confusing; I prefer to have a server come to the table and take my order.
Phil is the best
Great outdoor dining! Good food and good service. We look forward to another brunch at Pearl Dive!
Food was great -- I think the menu has been limited a bit from previous times, due to COVID, but there was plenty to choose from and our server was terrific. Thanks .
Really nice to be able to sit outside and see Washington DC get ready for a happy weekend with friends. Of course, anything oysters is excellent here. The Amish fried chicken also VERY good. It was a long but very pleasant walk from our Foggy Bottom stay. Thanks to Tam - a manager/host - for being so thoughtful with us. eid e
Had a great experience from service, food & atmosphere. Will definitely be back.
We were a group of three couples out for our first post-Covid restaurant dinner. The drinks were amazing, as was the food, and the service excellent. We will be back!
Very strange experience. Not only do you use a QR code to look at a menu but also to order. A food runner brings your food but other than that, there’s no contact nor service. The food was good except for our appetizers which were cold but there’s no way to tell anyone as there is no service. We briefly spoke to a bartender and understand that because of Covid, there’s a shortage of quality servers. I hope they hire soon as this doesn’t seem like a sustainable model particularly when other restaurants in the area are fully staffed. Drinks were great, food good just missing the personal connection a server would’ve offered to share favorite menu items & to make the experience more enjoyable. We’d definitely go back again just a heads up about service.
Absolutely outstanding food and cocktails. Would highly recommend.
Terrible experience. Waiter took glass of beer out of our friends hands AS he was drinking it because we were approaching our 2 hour Covid time limit and he wanted to rush us out the door. I’ve never seen anything like it. Incredibly rude and disrespectful and we will not be returning.
It was a little bit hard to order because everything is done via smart phone. But if you don’t have a smart phone you’re kind of out of luck. Ordered some drinks and food. One dish never came out but I already pay for it so I don’t know how that work
The way Pearl Dive has managed the COVID situation has been really great. I've dined here a few time and felt really safe and happy with the experience. First, you use a QR code at your table to review the menu and place your order through the website. You pay using the website. Next, you receive your order at your table - the staff still check in on you. Last, my favorite, because you've already paid via the order, you just get up and walk away when you're done!
The food is amazing - great seafood, oyster selection served various ways, and the best cocktails. The staff are really kind, attentive, and safe.
The ambiance is super fun too. Right on busy 14th street, outside is lovely, and music. I love this place!
Great food but annoying that you have to order everything on an app and tip on the app before you even receive any service.
Great. Quick. Easy.
I would definitely recommend this location. Friendly servers, and great drinks! Their mobile menu/ordering was very easy to navigate, and I loved the "Open Tab" feature.
Great oysters and ambiance!
Sat outside at a picnic table on a beautiful day slurping oysters and drinking cocktails. How bad could it be? Throw in happy hour pricing and ordering through my phone, you get a near perfect experience. The oysters ($1.40 per) were meaty and briney. Can’t wait to do it again soon. Great service, friendly staff.
Great for fans of southern food an oysters. Leave room for their desserts. Ambiance for group dining will improve when they can accept more guests post-COVID.
What a disappointment! From the minute we walked in, the atmosphere was sub par.
We felt like we were at the airport ordering from a kiosk. Server threw the utensils on the table without any eye contact. Food was not only rushed (without even clearing the previous course) it wasn't very good. Didn't even stay to eat the entrees. Don't bother. Would Not recommend. There are too many excellent restaurants in DC to waste your time/$ here.
This was a perfect low-key birthday brunch. The food was incredible and the service was great.
Easy ordering experince. Nice staff. Good food.
Great drinks, food and servers. Highly recommend
With the Covid19 pandemic restrictions in place this restaurant did a great job making our dinner feel like a normal night on the town. Food was great and beers were cold.
It was amazing I had a great brunch with some friends. The food was everything I enjoyed oysters the atmosphere I can’t stop thinking about it I just might go again today!
