I ordered the mai mai blackened fish sandwich. The coleslaw serving was so small I couldn’t find it on the plate. It could be more of a sizable portion. The fries were good. Didn’t order the truffle fries.
Had several appetizers for lunch. The buttermilk biscuits were extremely dry though the jam was delicious- just not enough of it for the three large, very dry biscuits. The crispy Brussels were awesome- best thing I had. I ordered the cauliflower but had to send it back - found a hair in it. The manager didn’t charge me for it but she didn’t offer any other kind of “apology”- I would’ve comped a glass of wine or a dessert. The crab cakes were pretty good, I’ve had better.
Overall, not bad; so, probably will give them a second look...
This was our second time dining at PawPaws and it was just as good as the first experience. Aside from the high noise level, everything was wonderful, from the attentive and friendly service to the selection and quality of the apps and entrees. Try the Tropical Handshake drink.. it’s a winner!
Great food and service... especially liked the pesto pasta and spinach salad. Our waitress Clare was excellent...she was personable and knowledgeable. Highly recommend!
Lovely time. Anthony, our server, was wonderful
Food was amazing but unfortunately our server was not very attentive. We had to ask others to get us things and they were great.
Excellent first time visit with very nice decor, friendly staff, fast service, and a superb menu
Oh my goodness....the crab cakes and hushpuppies are to die for!!! Everyone at the table enjoyed everything they had. We didn’t wait long and the server was very attentive. We will definitely be back!
Delicious, upscale Southern cuisine at a reasonable price. Great portions for a higher end place. Definitely no way you’re leaving hungry. The hush puppies were delicious. Cocktails were mediocre in taste and were quite expensive ($14-25 for most). I would absolutely come back.
The ambience is modern and low-key. There is plenty room between tables and the noise level was very comfortable. I would call the food elevated traditional Southern food. For instance I had the chicken fried steak, which was made from a filet. Very tasty, and like all their dishes, it was a huge portion. Maybe the dinner was a tiny bit pricey but not really by Charleston standards. For instance, we had a decent wine for a reasonable price. I would definitely go back to Pawpaw.
The food was delicious and well worth the money! We will definitely be back when visiting Charleston!
Fantastic - food, service and value.
First night out in chucktown and man was this a let down. Got sat under what felt like a wind tunnel. We had the air conditioning blowing on us constantly throughout the meal, which made things slightly chilly to the point of not even wanting to consider dessert when the time came. Waited what seemed like ages for a class of wine and the country lemonade which is just vodka and lemonade. When our appetizer came out the food running essentially tossed it on the table in front of my wife and disappeared. Once we broke through the salt layer of breadcrumbs and cheese the crab dip was actually pretty good. Just make sure you keep some water on hand to help wash down the salt. For the main course I ordered the 8oz steak. I thought it was cooked perfectly however my potatoes which were advertised as whipped seemed more like the "whipped" Idaho boxed instant potatoes which lacked anything resembling flavor and paired well with the flavorless asparagus. The wife went with the veggie pesto. Great portion size, pesto had good flavor but the pasta was overcooked. For the price we paid I was hoping for a little more instead I feel like we were cheated. Never got our servers name, actually saw who I think was the manager and the food runner more than we did our actual server. We won't be back and I'll only tell people to come here if you want to freeze, not actually taste your food, and leave with a feeling of regret for the amount you paid.
Good food and location but very loud and perhaps understaffed since service was slow and not that attentive
Excellent food. Very cool vibe. Enjoyed everything we ate.
Food was good and we liked the place. The problem is that it took the food more than 1 hour to arrive since we ordered. And when you are with a 6 year-old that’s an issue. Nobody explained the reason for the delay or even anticipated it. Our server apologized but it somewhat ruined the experience.
We had a last minute change of plans for lunch on Easter Sunday. Pawpaw was really busy but so accommodating! The service was fantastic! The food...well let’s just say you have to get the biscuits! Everything we had was so good! Looking forward to going back!
Went for Easter brunch and it was great! Made a reservation for 8 and were seated right away. Server was nice, food was excellent and good value. Overall was a wonderful experience.
Server was no where to be found after we order lunch. Food was cold when it arrived.
This was our last meal while on vacation in Charleston and I want a do-over. We were seated at exactly the same time as another party. It took us *an hour* to get our appetizers and I think we only got them because I flagged down our waiter. We then had to continue waiting another 29 minutes for our entrees. Meanwhile, the other party had received their orders, paid and left. When our food finally came the fish was so over cooked it wasn’t edible. The only bright spot was the biscuits. But overall not worth spending nearly two hours on a meal that overall was not that good.
The fried Brussels... a must get!!
The only real negative was the greeter was not at the door and other staff members made no effort to acknowledge us or to help find the person. Otherwise, a great restaurant. Nice ambiance, the swordfish I had was probably the best I've tasted--cooked exactly right. Sarah (Sara?) our waitress was very efficient, attentive, and friendly.
Pretty place, but meh.
Amazing food and great people watching if you sit outside
Excellent food and service!
Ask to sit in Rachel’s section. She is on it, super nice and knowledgeable! We will be back for sure!
Food was great. Service was
Limited menu but the food we ordered was excellent. It was a little noisy.
The location was great - right in the heart of Charleston. The food was simply okay.
We went to dinner before going to Dock Street Theatre. We were greeted and sat right away. Then our server arrived at our table, didn’t introduce herself, had to ask about the specials and fish of the day. She made it seem we were an inconvenience to her and she wasn’t that attentive. It was very slow at the time we went so she was not overwhelmed with tables. This isn’t the first time we have been here, however this is the first time we had a really poor experience with the server. I will go back, just really hope not to get the unknown female with blonde hair as our server. Food was great as usual, drinks were on point, but the server was a real let down, as everyone else’s servers were attentive, introduced themselves and I learned about all the specials from listening to other tables.
Excellent service and the food was great. Would highly recommend.
We had no server assigned to us, so waited 25 minutes at our table; had to flag down 4 different people passing by to get any water, drinks, etc. waited a long time for our appetizer and entrées-- when they finally did come they were ready at the same time and were brought to us simultaneously. Food quality was fine, and our appetizer was comped, (thank you) but would not return. There are too many other choices in Charleston.
This was our first time coming here. We arrived almost an hour before our reservation so grabbed seats at the bar. The bar tender was great. We ended up ordering all apps to share: Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, Mac n cheese, hush puppies. Everything was delicious!
Great service! The server had great insights on menu and Charleston. Gave some suggestions for things to do around town and knew the history of the area. Overall great experience. Food was fantastic! One of the better meals we have had while in Charleston and that is saying something because there are some great restaurants here.
My absolutely favorite Charleston restaurant. Every dish is creatively designed and flawlessly executed. The services is perfect. The atmosphere is comfy, relatively quiet, but not too casual. Every trip to Charleston includes a meal at Pawpaw.
They need servers who 1. don't ask if you're done while you have a fork in your hand, 2. don't bring the check while people are still eating, 3. don't show up 3 times in a few minutes at the beginning, deliver your food, then hang out at the bar with the other employees. Food was ok, but a $160 lunch for 4 deserved better. Hard pass.
The food was delicious and the portions were large! We loved the brussels as an app. All the entrees we had were amazing, probably the best I’ve had in Charleston. We had the Mahi-Mahi, shrimp & grits, and the fried chicken.
The menus and especially the wine list were both dirty. After ordering a bottle of wine and an appetizer. We settled in to look over the menu foe entree’s. When the waiter returned with the wine, He quickly showed me the bottle and started opening when fortunately I noticed it was the wrong bottle, not even the correct varietal! He mentioned he wasn’t sure the bottle I ordered was in stock, but he would check. After a long wait he returned with a different bottle than the one ordered, but the same varietal say this was more expensive, but they would charge me the same price as the one ordered. When the appetizer arrived it was Luke warm and overly oily. Our main course was bland and also oily. Water & wine glasses were never refilled. It was our last evening in Charleston and fortunately we had many marvelous meals, but not at Pawpaw’s.
First and foremost, Clare is amazing! We had the absolute pleasure of having her as our waitress. Wonderful personality, excellent service and great suggestions as to where to go and what to do around the city. We actually took followed one of recommendations afterward to go to a place called the Cocktail Club and it was outstanding! We had a couple of issues with a cocktail and entree when we were at PawPaw but she took care of them right away and with a bright and understanding attitude. She is truly a gem. We had an amazing experience there and would definitely come back to PawPaw when we are in town!
Server was prompt and friendly! Food was excellent! Would highly recommend this restaurant for a date night!
Food and service were excellent! A must stop if you’re in Charleston.
