Paul Martin's American Grill - San Mateo Ratings and Reviews
The food here is tasty. However, the service has failed to meet the mark the last 3 out of 4 times I have been here. From slow, inattentive waiters to failure to bring a drink. There's always something and, frankly, for the prices, the service should be solid. I'll think long and hard before spending my money here again.
We were given a gift certificate so we decided to go on a Sunday night when they have a full dinner of prime rib (includes salad, side and dessert) for $34. The place is very attractive and although it was almost full, we could easily hear each other talk. We were seated in a very nice booth above the tables and it was quite romantic. The entire dinner was delicious. The Cesear Salad was perfectly dressed, the prime rib was tender and done exactly as we had asked. I had the grilled sweet potatoes and they were excellent. Dessert was decadent ice cream. I would really recommend this place for a date.
We went for the Steak, and the no corkage policy. Glad we did. Steaks were excellent - the Wagyu was perfect. One food disappointment - the grilled artichoke was soggy and pretty tasteless. However - it's a well appointed large room - plenty space between the tables. Totally worth going!
We enjoyed Paul Martin's, our waiter was very nice and the service was good, but it was nothing special. Not sure why that Caesar is $18? But the food was good. The fish tacos were dang good and I would eat them again. The French Dip was a French Dip. We might go again, but only of there are regular updates to the menu. We indicated through Open Table we were there for a birthday, but there was no birthday treat or otherwise.
Already one of my favorite restaurants but was pleased to see they have more fish options then before. I had the halibut & it was yummy. Their salads are great & it’s the only place I eat meat out cause their meat is all natural, meaning no antibiotics or hormones.
We love hanging out at Paul Martin's and have been doing so for years. We go there for most of our special days: Valentine's, NYE, birthdays, and anniversaries. Although our waitress was nice and friendly, she forgot my husband's drink and she assumed when I mentioned a particular brand of wine that I wanted a red when I wanted a white. Also we were offered the incorrect salad twice. We had to correct the server about what we had ordered.
Love Paul Martin's, would like more cocktail selection but the menu is excellent, I always can't decide because I love everything. Good basic very well prepared and cooked "American" food that isn't boring or tasteless. Always my first choice as we can walk, plus wear nice jeans yet it's a little more of an upscale atmosphere
Our party of 4 for dinner were pleasantly surprised by the wonderful food and attentive service. All of our special requests were handled exactly as requested. Everyone really enjoyed our dining experience at Paul Martin’s. We shall definitely return. I would recommend the marinated skirt steak.
Worst service. We saw our waitress twice the entire meal. Sat at the table for 15 minutes before we were even greeted. Food came out wrong. Took 30 minutes for it to be corrected and the staff blamed the kitchen rather than apologize. We had to go to the bar to get refills on cokes. Staff standing around bullshitting rather than providing service. We were there for 2 hours and not because we wanted to be. Paid by cash just to not have to be there for another 20 minutes waiting for a credit card charged.
We were pleasantly surprised at how nice this place is - and it's local. It might seem like an odd asset, but they don't use fabric softener in their napkins. (Haven't you ever had a strong whiff that interfered with the taste of something delicate?) The waiter (Daniel) hit the perfect mark of seeing that we had everything we needed, while not interrupting our conversation. The wine was quite nice. We had McManis, Petite Sirah, 2015, California. I'd get it again just for the wonderful nose! We'll be back!
We both ordered from the holiday special menu: Filet Oscar $39
petite mesquite grilled filet mignon topped with a Dungeness crab cake, house-made hollandaise, and fresh asparagus. I should have known better since I ordered the lobster special another time. The lobster was small and I was still a bit hungry. Same goes for the Filet Oscar the filet is an ok portion but the crab cake is small and does NOT taste like the crab cakes in Baltimore that I am use to. Also pls note fiance did NOT receive the hollandaise and Hugh the manager tried to say that there is only a little hollandaise so it was prob there? We just could not see it? I had a BIG pool of Hollandaise. I guess they gave me his Hollandaise. My asparagus were burned and one beyond recognition! Also pls cut the woody part off. Fiance had a glass of Hogue red nice. I had pistachio ice cream with shortbreads - delicious. Victoria was a pleasant serveur. Stick with the prime rib special (the last time I had it it was still great as is the fried chick.) I think the new manager/owner may be Asian. Hope they don't change things up too much!
This restaurant is under new management and has changed. While the menu is the same, the food quality is not. It also appears that portions have gotten smaller. The food was okay rather than good, but the service was excellent in spite of a very busy night.
Celebrating birthdays. had reservations at 6:15. Had to wait 30 minutes to be seated. Wasn’t offered any wine or cocktail while we were inconveniently waiting. Only until I asked did they offer glass a wine .
This is 2nd time I’ve been when service was lacking. It’s disappointing because the food is good.
Was very disappointed with the fish tacos. In the past they have been great but this time no flavor and they were totally flat. I should have sent them back but I had invited new people who had not been there and did not want to cause an issue. They thank goodness ordered the hamburgers and one person wanted a salad that they were totally out of On a Sunday at 6:45 pm. I would say poor planning on your part. I have talked to others who have told me that they have had the same experience lately and will probably not return to the restaurant. So sorry to tell you this but I think that you should hear the bad along with good.
It was extremely busy the night we went, so service was a bit slow. Waitress forgot our bread, and didn't check on us at all. We've been here many times, and usually the service is great. Food was really good, especially the short ribs. No room left for dessert, but I do wish they would bring back the salted caramel ice cream!!
unbelievably awful and I have NEVER taken time to write a review. But so many things were just so subpar it was sad, amazed they are in business. The server was fantastic and told him to get the hell out of dodge and go work somewhere great - with quality and attention and excellence as that is the type of place he should be working. He is a young man and clearly was embarassed - first the wine ordered not available, then TWO of the two main dishes we ordered not available, then asked for a substitution of a different vegetable/side on the main dish we ordered that was available - and his manager would not let him do it and they charged us for the preferred/asked for side vegetable and still put the unwanted veg on the plate too. The entrees were so so (salmon) and a blah tasting chipotle chicken grilled, with watery spinach, the extra side we had wanted substituted ended up being a cold cauliflower with some unrecognizable flavor (SUGGESTION BEST vegetable dishes in norcal, go to TRUE Life kitchen. and I have NO connection in any way with True Life Kitchen other than eating there 5 times in past few months and it is awesome food) Anyway, I digress - no bread offered with dinner, though the plates were somewhat bear. The sad was good (yay) Oddly the table we had was 3 inches or so higher than all the other tables on the floor - would not nomrally have noticed or cared but it was just such a weird restaurant experience at that point. Then the bill came and the charge included the $4 more for the two glasses of wine that had needed to be substituted when the wine we originally ordered from the menu was not available. I work in the food/wine business and so this particularly bad experience at a restaurant is so not the norm I felt compelled to warn folks not to spend money here. It is not high end and not inexpensive, so you'll still drop over $100 on a really bad meal and have alot more fun making dinner at home with money in your pocket!
Split an appetizer and entree. Party of two. Only thing I was disappointed about was order the Butchers board which came with three slices of toasted bread one they completely burnt (BLACK) on one side and tried to hide it by putting on the bottom and burnt side down. Other then that great night.
kkWe have gone two separate times for the Tuesday night special; buttermilk fried chicken.. Our dinner time was 6pm and both times they were out!! The place is so noisy and wind blows through it every time they open the front door/curtain.. The chef must be incompetent that he cannot have enought of the special at 6pm.. He sells it all at lunch.. What is wrong with having too much then serving the rest on Wednesday? The brick chicken we had was hard and dry.
We will never go back.
We've tried this restaurant many times. I don't know what the problem is with this one. The one in Roseville is reliably good. This last visit was our LAST VISIT. I ordered the kale salad without any of the garlicky dressing. I asked for blue cheese dressing on the side. I got the dressing on the side alright, but to my surprise it didn't taste like blue cheese at all. It was filled with minced onions, chives and dill. I told her that it was not the right dressing and she checked with the kitchen, returning to tell me that it was in fact blue cheese but that they make it that way. I was annoyed and disappointed as I had tasted it already and I have a very bad reaction to alliums. I have had the blue cheese dressing before and it didn't taste like that. Who would have thought that the blue cheese dressing would have little blue cheese in it and all the onion you could stand? It was not her fault though and we just shrugged it off as a weird thing that happens in this very oddly run restaurant. Within minutes the manager appeared, unasked for, at the table. Instead of just asking me what happened he launched into a defense of their "secret recipe" and when I said I thought it was bizarre and maybe it was something they ought to note in their menu he asked me in a demanding tone "WELL, did you tell your server you were allergic??" WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THAT NECESSARY WITH THE DAMN DRESSING?? Whatever I tried to say he spoke over and was obviously harried and, hello, you are not invited to our table so thanks and bye now. We won't be back. There are too many mistakes made in the kitchen, between not reading what the server wrote, to the servers not writing down what we want to getting odd variations on the food ordered or someone else's food at our table. It's expensive food to be so haphazard in the serving. Some of the servers are good but the majority of the staff seem to have been randomly plucked from the shoppers in the adjacent shopping mall.
Not a memorable experience. The waiter was pleasant enough, but brought the wrong wine after correcting the error, waited >10 minutes to be served.
We both ordered one of their signature dishes, Salmon, only to find out they were out of it.
Ordered strip steak Medium and it was served rare. Asked that it be corrected and it was brought back ~10 minutes later still rare. The sides were cold by this point.
The waiter didn’t seem concerned by any of the above nor was any offer made to adjust the bill.
Won’t be going back any time soon. Not recommended.
I have dined here several times before. Love the ambiance, the Salmon & Fish Tacos.
However, the music is way too loud & genre of a dance bar. Not the mellow background that goes with a nice meal. Don't get me wrong, I love music & love to dance but was on the edge of annoying while we are trying to talk & relax & didn't suit the ambiance of this restaurant.
