Paul Martin's American Grill - San Mateo Ratings and Reviews
It was extremely busy the night we went, so service was a bit slow. Waitress forgot our bread, and didn't check on us at all. We've been here many times, and usually the service is great. Food was really good, especially the short ribs. No room left for dessert, but I do wish they would bring back the salted caramel ice cream!!
unbelievably awful and I have NEVER taken time to write a review. But so many things were just so subpar it was sad, amazed they are in business. The server was fantastic and told him to get the hell out of dodge and go work somewhere great - with quality and attention and excellence as that is the type of place he should be working. He is a young man and clearly was embarassed - first the wine ordered not available, then TWO of the two main dishes we ordered not available, then asked for a substitution of a different vegetable/side on the main dish we ordered that was available - and his manager would not let him do it and they charged us for the preferred/asked for side vegetable and still put the unwanted veg on the plate too. The entrees were so so (salmon) and a blah tasting chipotle chicken grilled, with watery spinach, the extra side we had wanted substituted ended up being a cold cauliflower with some unrecognizable flavor (SUGGESTION BEST vegetable dishes in norcal, go to TRUE Life kitchen. and I have NO connection in any way with True Life Kitchen other than eating there 5 times in past few months and it is awesome food) Anyway, I digress - no bread offered with dinner, though the plates were somewhat bear. The sad was good (yay) Oddly the table we had was 3 inches or so higher than all the other tables on the floor - would not nomrally have noticed or cared but it was just such a weird restaurant experience at that point. Then the bill came and the charge included the $4 more for the two glasses of wine that had needed to be substituted when the wine we originally ordered from the menu was not available. I work in the food/wine business and so this particularly bad experience at a restaurant is so not the norm I felt compelled to warn folks not to spend money here. It is not high end and not inexpensive, so you'll still drop over $100 on a really bad meal and have alot more fun making dinner at home with money in your pocket!
Split an appetizer and entree. Party of two. Only thing I was disappointed about was order the Butchers board which came with three slices of toasted bread one they completely burnt (BLACK) on one side and tried to hide it by putting on the bottom and burnt side down. Other then that great night.
kkWe have gone two separate times for the Tuesday night special; buttermilk fried chicken.. Our dinner time was 6pm and both times they were out!! The place is so noisy and wind blows through it every time they open the front door/curtain.. The chef must be incompetent that he cannot have enought of the special at 6pm.. He sells it all at lunch.. What is wrong with having too much then serving the rest on Wednesday? The brick chicken we had was hard and dry.
We will never go back.
We've tried this restaurant many times. I don't know what the problem is with this one. The one in Roseville is reliably good. This last visit was our LAST VISIT. I ordered the kale salad without any of the garlicky dressing. I asked for blue cheese dressing on the side. I got the dressing on the side alright, but to my surprise it didn't taste like blue cheese at all. It was filled with minced onions, chives and dill. I told her that it was not the right dressing and she checked with the kitchen, returning to tell me that it was in fact blue cheese but that they make it that way. I was annoyed and disappointed as I had tasted it already and I have a very bad reaction to alliums. I have had the blue cheese dressing before and it didn't taste like that. Who would have thought that the blue cheese dressing would have little blue cheese in it and all the onion you could stand? It was not her fault though and we just shrugged it off as a weird thing that happens in this very oddly run restaurant. Within minutes the manager appeared, unasked for, at the table. Instead of just asking me what happened he launched into a defense of their "secret recipe" and when I said I thought it was bizarre and maybe it was something they ought to note in their menu he asked me in a demanding tone "WELL, did you tell your server you were allergic??" WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THAT NECESSARY WITH THE DAMN DRESSING?? Whatever I tried to say he spoke over and was obviously harried and, hello, you are not invited to our table so thanks and bye now. We won't be back. There are too many mistakes made in the kitchen, between not reading what the server wrote, to the servers not writing down what we want to getting odd variations on the food ordered or someone else's food at our table. It's expensive food to be so haphazard in the serving. Some of the servers are good but the majority of the staff seem to have been randomly plucked from the shoppers in the adjacent shopping mall.
Not a memorable experience. The waiter was pleasant enough, but brought the wrong wine after correcting the error, waited >10 minutes to be served.
We both ordered one of their signature dishes, Salmon, only to find out they were out of it.
Ordered strip steak Medium and it was served rare. Asked that it be corrected and it was brought back ~10 minutes later still rare. The sides were cold by this point.
The waiter didn’t seem concerned by any of the above nor was any offer made to adjust the bill.
Won’t be going back any time soon. Not recommended.
I have dined here several times before. Love the ambiance, the Salmon & Fish Tacos.
However, the music is way too loud & genre of a dance bar. Not the mellow background that goes with a nice meal. Don't get me wrong, I love music & love to dance but was on the edge of annoying while we are trying to talk & relax & didn't suit the ambiance of this restaurant.
Great place for date! We really feel this is a great mix of atmosphere and food. Service has always been excellent. Management is involved and personable. Just a great place to bring your date or family for special occasions. Our favorite is the skirt steak and the butcher’s board appetizer.
Been going to this place since Xavier and before I knew him. New mgmt Kenny and HUGH seem to be keeping up the quality. Sierra our server was good. We stopped in after a long work week for the HH chick sand and cheese burg with glasses of Hogue red. Last Tues caught the fried chick special delish. Says shortbreads (plural) so pls give me at least two! I had the pistachio and ONE shortbread for dessert. Hope to catch the filet and crab cake before Dec 31! Shout to Ashley that always swings by! Can't wait to use my promo, when purchasing GC.
If you like dry fried chicken this is the place. I ordered the Tuesday buttermilk fried chicken special. They must have forgot the buttermilk because it was the driest fried chicken I have ever had. The special also included their campfire sundae but all I got was a plain single scoop of ice cream. Disappointing.
As usual - since we go there often - Good food, good service, nice place ---
As retired seniors who like to eat out, we appreciate the restaurants that give us a good price
on their regular food - especially because we can adapt our hours to fill the spaces when they are more advantageous to the restaurants. We hope you keep more offers coming.....
Have taken many senior friends, who have told us they will continue coming...
Unfortunately there was a family with a baby who they let scream intermittently which was
unpleasant for others who had to listen to it. I am not faulting the restaurant for that, but it
did not make for the most pleasant evening out. The server did her best, but a few things were
out of her control. The food was average.
I had high expectations entering the restaurant...nice decor. I was seated and waited for a server to welcome me. Never happened. Finally a Manager asked if I was being helped. He proceeded to ask if I would care for a drink and then immediately asked what I would like for dinner. Ordered a glass of wine. Waited and a waitress comes to me and informs me they are out of red wine...wtf? They were out of the wine I ordered. The Manager returns with a different brand, opens the bottle and pours some for me and him to sample. Class act! Ordered the Sunday prime rib. Another person arrives and drops a salad in front of me and darts off. Use the pepper grinder on the table...empty! The salad was good but over-drenched with dressing. The waitress that informed me they were out of red wine returns not to ask me if everything was to my liking but to say my meal will be up shortly but in the mean time I'll bring you some bread. The bread arrives along with a my entree on a searing plate that felt like it was sitting in the oven. Waitress never returned until the end. I do not recommend this establishment!
We can’t afford nice food often so this was a special occasion.
The restaurant was empty around 4:00pm. This was good because we got the whole places attention, and everything came out quick.
We started with the salt and pepper shrimp, which came out perfect and delicious. We ate all 8 pieces with no complaints. Next we got the chicken salad. It was their version of a Chinese chicken salad, however it was good and not too saucy. I would order it again.
We shared the entree as well, and that was the brick chicken. I can’t say I enjoyed this as much as it the others, the chicken had bones and fat pieces which got annoying to keep pulling out.
Overall the chicken won’t be something I’ll get again. I know the skirt steak is good, maybe I’ll get that again.
Food and drinks were tasty, but high prices. The facility looked clean. Our server, Ian, was very good and had a lot of patience for 3 friends who were catching up and not really studying the menu. When making the online reservation, I mentioned that our dinner was a birthday celebration. There was no mention of this upon check-in or at all during our meal. That was a little disappointing.
Went to the hostess to see if they had openings and was told it would be an hour. Booked on here for a table available 15 minutes later. I just thought that was stupid and sad. Asked for a burger cooked medium that came out raw. Ordered pasta for my daughter with butter and cheese. Came out completely plain. Sent it back and it came out with butter. There are some basics missing here.
We really like the food, but the troubling part is having it made correctly the first time. We've been here multiple times and 70% off the time they get my wife's order wrong.
On this occasion it was my wife's b-day. She really likes the food so she decided on paul martins as her b-day dinner location. My wife ordered a plain burger with nothing on it. The first burger had aoli on the bun and burger. They second time the burger was well done and burnt on the outside. The third burger was practically raw.
Due to already sending the burger back twice and the entire dinner party had already finished their meal, my wife decided to just keep the burger.
The manager and chef apologized. The manager compt my wife's meal, a glass of wine, and a beer for me. The waitress was really apologetic and offered us free dessert.
In all I think they handled the situation correctly. It's just frustrating that this happens consistently at a place where we really love the food.
One of our clients ordered a black and blue cheesburger which they didn't get quite right the first time. They did remake the burger the second time to perfection. Most restaurants won't cook a burger raw as they claim health issues. Kudos to Paul Martin's for giving the customer what they want!
