Paul & Jimmy's Ristorante Ratings and Reviews
Our waiter was very detail oriented and friendly. We ordered from the pre fixe menu which offered both quantity and a wide array of options. I went with the veal Parmesan and we each ordered a different app and dessert to share. It was a great way to sample the menu.
Paul and Jimmy's Restaurant is a neighborhood favorite. The food is delicious and reasonably priced. The prix fixe lunch portions are generous. Service is attentive but not intrusive. My friends and I spent a long lunch catching up with one another and we were never rushed.
Great drinks, a perfect scotch old fashion . Nice wine list.
Started with there lasagna and it was outstanding. Could have been a little bigger but I ate it all.
Then sausage and chicken with onions , peppers . Large portion and was excellent. Took half home with me. I will be returning very soon.
Service has been an issue for years. Some nights are fine, others are terrible. They seem to handle things if the restaurant is not full but can't cope with a full house. This is a neighborhood restaurant for me and based on bad service it was off my list for years. I went back about a year ago and had a few night where service was okay but last Saturday night was very bad. It will be off my list again, which is too bad because the food is pretty good.
From the original location in the 1970s to the current one since the 90s, P&J's has been a terrific place for good food and efficient, friendly service. It is good for families, friends, clients, anyone who likes a good classic Italian meal with modern touches.
I had never heard of Paul & Jimmy's until recently. I was doing my weekly shopping at Whole Foods and came upon a chef doing a demo for pasta sauces. Now I usually make my own sauce, but I decided to give the Nonna's and Puttanesca a try. They were by far the best jarred sauce I had ever tried. After chatting with the chef I learned of his family's restaurant was just down the street. I figured if their jarred sauce was this good I must try the restaurant itself.
I went with my wife for dinner and loved everything. Some restaurants just get it right. Maybe that's why they've been around for so long. We had the Brussels sprout salad and eggplant rollatini. Both excellent. For main dishes we had a Pork Ossobucco special and Lasagna. I will definitely be returning to this neighborhood gem. I nice to find an unpretentious and cozy restaurant that makes you feel at home.
I love having a go-to restaurant in the city where I know we'll always be treated well, eat great food and feel at home. I get a solid meal every time, and I can never say no to the rollatini. I've been here with friends, family, and coworkers. It's a chill place you can stay for hours and have a few glasses of wine. I think I've gained 10 pounds by going to this place... but not complaining
Had the best experience here eating at the bar which had been redone since the last time I was here They have a small plates menu which I sampled along with pasta and a veal chop from their menu which has a nice selection of old Italian classics along with newer dishes. The waiter was friendly and helpful with recommending a nice wine. The food was the best I've had at any other NYC neighborhood restaurant. Will Definately be back soon. Thinking of hosting my next family get together here since there is a very cozy feel here.
Just moved my office onto 18th and 1st and wanted an elegant restaurant for a business meeting last Monday. It was the perfect spot to sit and talk over a classic Italian style menu. The staff was courteous and understanding we were in a meeting. I had the salt roasted beets and artichoke salad which was fantastic. I ended with the Branzino. I typically reserve fish orders for only the best restaurants and this Branzino didn't disappoint.
Of course I told my wife and she wanted to try this place so I took her on Friday. My wife had the Veal Saltimbocca and I had the grilled salmon. Again, it was fantastic. The ambiance is a warm and friendly with an authentic Italian feel.
After having lunch and dinner at Paul & Jimmy's I am officially a fan of this place and highly recommend it.
Food was traditional/stereotypical Italian but fairly well executed on the mains. Nothing spectacular, nothing really stood out.
I do remember the look of frustration on our servers face when we decided to 1) not order a bottle of wine (only beer and wines by the glass) and 2) not order dessert. More disappointing was when the check was dropped I noticed an usually high drinks tab on the back of the bill which they had mistakenly added. The manager also felt it necessary to count cash and check receipts at the bar in front of everyone while we ate. Classy.
Take away -> Aside from the service, the food was good. However, why would anyone bother with this place especially when you have Maialino and La Follia around the corner.
Was looking forward to Paul & Jimmy's based on the menu and other reviews. Was so disappointed. The restaurant has a nice ambience. We were seated and given menus. Our waiter was pleasant but seemed stressed but the restaurant was full and it was a Saturday night so made allowances for this. Took a while for him to come and take a drink order. The drinks arrived but our food order was not taken. Eventually came to take the food order. Had to ask for the specials as this information was not offered. I ordered an appetizer portion of the Orechiette alla Baresi and the Veal Chop with Wild Mushrooms and Truffle Oil. The pasta was blah. The sauce was bland and just tasted like jar tomato sauce that needed seasoning. Left most of it which believe me NEVER happens when there is pasta in front of me. Now the Veal Chop. I love both mushrooms and truffle so was looking forward to this. Asked for it medium. Came out rare so I sent it back. Came back out. Was cooked to medium but was the most tasteless dish I have ever had. There was not a hint of truffle nor a hint of seasoning. Too mouthfuls were plenty.
My husband had the cannelloni to start and the saltimbocca, both of which were average but edible.
Given the great reviews can only presume that there was a different chef or we were there on an off night. That being said I would not return.
We went as a work group for the fixed price lunch. It was a very good price for three courses, and the waiters were friendly, but not always attentive in the not very full restaurant.
My main problem was the food, whilst there was nothing wring with it, and no one complained, I found it fairly average. Good value, given the price, but not anything special.
That said, a nice ambiance and great for a group as we were given plenty of space and time.
Paul & Jimmy's is a local treasure that has stood the test of time. The Italian cuisine is inventive, served in a comfortable room with rustic ambiance. The service and wait staff are pleasant and accommodating. Our trip here on New Year's Eve was memorable. We started with a Caesar salad (very tasty) and pasta fagiole. We shared a filling portion of tortellini in cream sauce. Each of our entrees, chicken campaniole and veal parmesan, was well-prepared. Our waiter suggested a bottle of merlot, which was moderate in cost and complemented both entrees. The only disappointment of the evening was the weak cappuccino at meal's end, without the robustness one expects, nor the cinnamon finish on the steamed milk. We will return here though, as the dining experience is pleasant and a good value for the money.
The food & service were great. Nice, relaxed environment and we could all hear each other speak - it can be so hard to find a restaurant where you can actually hold a conversation. The waitstaff didn't rush us at all and were just as friendly to people who came in at 10:30 as those who came in early. (They supposedly close at 11PM but didn't seem in any rush to close.)
Found this last minute before a show at Irving Plaza. From the first greeting we knew we'd enjoy it and be back! Started with perfect martinis and the special Burrrata which was buttery and yummy! Moved on to some of the best Veal Capriose (spelling ?) ever and my hubby is a maven on this dish. Will certainly return! Plus very attentive and kind waiter and staff.
Very disappointed. Chose Paul & Jimmy's for a group of guests in from England and Australian to show New York's best. Failed by a good margin. Had to ask owner/manager for a waiter to bring us menus. Gap from appetizers to main course was so long I half jokingly asked if we could call and order in something to eat from another restaurant. Food arrived in bits and pieces, nothing worse than half a table staring at their food (that wasn't all that hot begin with) while the rest is still in the kitchen. And it was just too loud in the place overall to enjoy. One big table was so loud it sounded like a pack of hyenas. Have a good time, by all means, but they were so above and beyond what's acceptable in a non-private room setting, and no one said anything. Just bad judgement by management. Food was mostly fine, ironically, but not sufficiently outstanding to warrant a return visit in context with the whole experience. We won't be back, too many other places to go.
On the other hand, it was such a debacle I was inspired to make a comeback for our international visitors and we went to Ferrara in Little Italy for dessert, so we ended on a high note.
This resaurant has a lot to offer. Very nice decor and varied menu tarnished by poor service. Visited Paul & Jimmy's on a Sunday afternoon with family. Upon entry, there was only one other pair of patrons. The service or lack there of made for an inadequate experience.
Thanks to open table I found this amazin gem. Small yet cozy restaurant in the union square area. I decided to try them out and give them my test. Basically if the lasagne is good then everything else should follow. I was right. Perfect portion, meaty with flavor. Great joB
A local spot well worth a visit, we were there for lunch, but I am sure dinner would be no less pleasant. enjoyable meal, service was casual and friendly. yes, if you are in the neighborhood and in the mood for Italian food, make this restaurant your stopping point.
we were a party of 5 and ordered various meals. All the food was good, not great, but good. We had a nice table in the back of the restaurant, where it was quiet and we could talk and hear one another. I probably would go back if it were not for the attitude of the wait staff. The know it all, opinionated waiter was visibly unhappy that I only left a 16% tip on the bill. Too bad the waiter does't understand that he as to earn the tip. I thought I was being overly generous, he obviously thought I was being cheap. Therefore, I probably will not go back, I don't need to be judges or embarrassed at the end of the meal by the waiter.
We made reservations for a group of 4. We were promptly greeted & seated. The place was dimly lit & was warm & welcoming. There were also a few tables available outside. The restaurant was spacious yet had a cozy feeling to it. The bread and butter was good. The main reason we chose Paul & Jimmy's was because they have a gluten-free pasta. We called ahead to find out/confirm. The entire party enjoyed their meals- Orechiette alla Baresi (pasta with sausage mushrooms, peas, and sun-dried tomatoes), Spiedini alla Siciliana (veal rolled around provolone and prosciutto), Linguine alle Vongole (linguine w/ clams) and the gluten-free dish for my wife- gluten-free pasta with marinara, shrimp and ricotta.
The server was willing to accommodate the allergy and customize a pasta dish to my wife's taste/preference. Service was present, but not over-bearing. Waters were always full but there was no lingering over the table. We were seated toward the front of the restaurant near a cash register & the bar, though, so at times it did seem like someone was over our shoulder- but they were usually just working at the register/phone.
Prices were fair. I would have liked if some of the entrée dishes came with a little side of pasta- even a simple spaghetti. We were able to enjoy our meal and take our time. We were not rushed.
In the end, everyone enjoyed the evening at Paul & Jimmy's. I did notice that only 1 of the 4 people took left overs home... either the food was very good (which it was) or the portions were small. I would go with the former- although, by Italian standards, the portions were not larger either. As mentioned, the entrees do not come w/ pasta- just a little salad and small potato. So unlike many Italian places, where you end up taking home leftovers, the portions here were about right for the current meal.
I would recommend the restaurant to those looking for good Italian food in a local family-owned restaurant w/ a welcoming neighborhood/family feel. Thanks!
