The good news is we had a very enjoyable meal. The bad news is the restaurant is permanently closing in two weeks, only to reopen as a private club with a different concept
I have been to Paradiso several times in the past, all great experiences. However, this last experience will likely keep me from returning. I had family in town from abroad and was looking forward to sharing a good meal and conversation with them. The information about visiting family and a special occasion were noted on the OpenTable reservation. However, the conversation eventually became focused on the food and service. It was extremely unfortunate from the thickness of the ravioli pasta, the cold sauce with a sprinkling of unmelted cheese, lack of discernible filling, to the cooking time on the ravioli. The server broke some of the cork in the wine and, although offered to get a new bottle, also asked if we would consider drinking the newly sedimented wine. She brought out a different bottle on request. The fresh mozzarella di buffala was essentially store packaged ciliegine. The end of meal requested espresso was instead a watery americano-style beverage. The foie gras was more like a sweetbread on top of poorly cooked scallops. We lacked necessary silverware at certain points during the meal. The salads were served at different times without a request for such an amendment. One of my guests liked his martini and the calamari. Two other guests said their steak and salmon were "okay." Overall, this meal detracted, rather than enhanced, quality family time. I had to think long and hard about writing this post because it's generally not in my nature to do so, and I loved the former restaurant of the new owner and chef, and the former Paradiso. I felt compelled to say something this time.
My wife and I are from Minnesota and were looking for a great place for a night out and I found this place on the web. We were pleasantly surprised since we have not found much in Salem that we could call a great place to go for a nice night out. The wait staff was excellent along with very good food and drinks. The menu is small and the prices are on the higher end, but I don't mind paying a little more to get what this place offers. A very quaint place for a special occasion dinner or a night out treat.
Excellent meal and service, a great place for a nice Italian meal.
We needn't have made reservations. Lots of open tables...and on a Saturday evening too! Very expensive menu. Our waitress was lovely but much too busy, as both bartender and server. Not enough menu variety for our taste. And, we both got very ill with digestive issues within a short time after leaving...probably bad oil.
Service was pretentious. Wine list very mediocre. My meal was served warm (keep in mind the table top is metal and cold as ice - warm food on a cold table = cold food in no time at all). Spouse dinner was served incomplete and was not rectified. Salads were good.
Experience was so
Much better than our first. Food was fabulous, drinks and service.
Excellent service and food. I loved the decorative 20's theme.
Outstanding restaurant. Quite probably Salem's best.
Absolutely devine experience enjoyed with my very special date. We both enjoyed our evening together beyond expectations, thanks to the chef for the delicious meal, Savannah for such amazing service, elegant decor and quiet ambience. Both my date and I would highly recommend Paradiso's.
When this restaurant opened, I rated it much higher. It was the closest experience to Northwest Portland dining. Over time, and culminating with our most recent visit, service has declined. The absence of Friday evening patrons indicate I'm not alone with this assessment. Slow service, small portions, unforgettable bar offerings. I'm done with this place.
Good meal, good service, excellent cocktails. A little too expensive relative to similar restaurants in Salem, & not quite as exquisite as one would expect in Portland for the same price.
Tasty meal in a beautifully restored, historic venue. Highly recommend the daily pasta selection and mussels; inventive and well-prepared desserts; fun cocktails. Friendly, but professional and attentive service. Expensive but great choice for a special occasion. Thanks, Paradiso, for raising the bar on dining expectations in Salem.
Food is expensive but delicious. Great service, and lovely atmosphere. We came here to celebrate our anniversary and it was perfect. We sat in a booth by the window and had fun people watching downtown.
After several very enjoyable dinners here over the last couple of years, this visit was disappointing. Fish entrees were over cooked, food and beverage service was spotty. Hopefully it was just an one time anomaly.
Great atmosphere. Art Deco done well. Amazing food, great service.
The main problem was that the food was too salty. Two of us had the bolognase and one person the ravioli and all 3 of us thought the food too salty. I could just barely manage to eat mine as there wasn't anything else on the menu that I wanted.
That was the other problem. The pasta special was the ravioli and they only had one order left by 6:30.
It was Easter Sunday and maybe it was not their regular chef
There is no reason to over salt food as it can be added and bolognase is cooked down so as the water evaporates, it is naturally a bit salty anyway.
This could be a really good place.
My boyfriend and I had been looking forward to eating at this restaurant. Positives: The ambiance was wonderful and the Art Deco period decor was a feast for the eyes. Our server was friendly and attentive. Negatives: the food didn't live up to the decor. We started with a salad that the server indicated was large enough to share. Split down the center, I got 4 lettuce leaves and a few orange segments. My boyfriend ordered the chicken with Gorgonzola polenta. The chicken was over cooked, and the polenta was lukewarm at best. I ordered the special which was a shrimp and lobster ravioli. The flavor was good, but it was on the tough side of al dente. This restaurant is beautifully appointed, but the meal was a disappointment.
Really nice anniversary dinner
I took my wife out for her birthday dinner. Atmosphere was great. The decor is fantastic. We really loved it being quiet enough to talk to and hear each other. Great service. The food was really good too.
Disappointing. Such a beautiful restaurant, a true beauty in Salem, but the food just can't come out with any consistency. We've dined there repeatedly and even when ordering the same entree we had a week previously that was outstanding, the next week it was overcooked and nearly inedible. This has happened over and over. They've been open long enough to have these issues worked out. Please take consistency in the kitchen seriously. We'd be your biggest cheerleader if you could deliver consistently. One out of five really good meals is just really poor odds. Hoping you'll turn in around.
Excellent service. Food only medium, small portions, limited menu, and spendy.
Arrived for an anniversary dinner and was greeted by the manager (spoke w/before arriving) to make sure everything was up to expectations with our visit!! The waitress was very sociable, catered very well to our wants of the visit. Would highly recommend this restaurant and will definitely visit again!! Very pleased overall!!
This restaurant is one of my favorites. The food is always delicious and the service is superb.
The restaurant interior is beautiful... Restored Art Deco. Not a lot of tables, but that made for cozy conversation. The food was sadly subpar. Beet salad had a quarter of a beet and a large portion of soft cheese with a handful of walnuts over 2 leaves of lettuce. The chicken didn't live up to the menu description ... Polenta was cold, Brussels sprouts were nearly raw, chicken was covered in what seemed like bar-b-que sauce. Saving grace was the almond cake desert. The waitress was odd... Looked like an extra from Suicide Squad and had kindof a sing-songy way of calling us strange lovey-dovey pet names. She was really quite distracting. They had a good wine list...and a handful of good draft beers. Won't go back.
We loved every bite and every sip! The service was wonderful (I think our server's name was Charlotte?) She was informative, friendly and fast. This was our first visit and we tried the eggplant meat (less) balls - so flavorful and creative! The pasta was fresh and delicious. My only complaint is the price. While it was all impeccable, it's difficult to pay $20 - 25 for a plate of pasta. However, while it can't be an every day place, I'd still go again for a special night out.
Limited menu, but both dishes we ordered were very good. Presentation was excellent. Nice dessert selection. Only complaint here: They do not carry Bombai saffire gin for my martini. Never ran across a bar that didn't carry it.
Very cosmopolitan. It's a small dining area with the bar mixed in. Easy to have a conversation.
Needs improvement. We got seated right away and got our drink orders started right away. However, she came back quickly to take our orders -- even before we got our drinks. A no-no. Next, she or the bartender screwed up my substitute martini, making it dirty rather than very dry. Server came back again to take our meal order; we had barely sipped our drinks. Sent her away. Once we did place our order, we were served within 10 minutes. Good.
A bit spendy. Nice for a special night out, but not a regular spot. Would return for drinks and munchies.
The food was great and service was the best we have had in a long time.
Great meal with my Valentine. Live in Italy for three years and it brought back found memories. Very authentic! Thanks for a wonderful evening.
No vegetarian options on the menu. When requested the server acted put out. Ended with an ok plain pasta dish. The last two times I was there the menu and experience were much better. I rated the food higher because my date was very happy with the roast.
Another wonderful meal! All of our choices were delicious! Can't wait to go back again.
We came for the halibut; it was good but overpriced for the amount of food included. We won't plan on returning unless we can't find good halibut elsewhere!
We have been to Paradiso twice now and both times were outstanding. The Art Deco decor is stunning and the service was personable, knowledgeable and efficient. Every one of us on both nights felt their food was excellent- taste and presentation- from the appetizer to the dessert. I personally had the salmon and portobello mushroom over spinach risotto one night and roasted chicken, polenta and brussel sprouts with bacon the other and both dinners were amazing. This is a fantastic restaurant and a wonderful addition to Salem! Don't miss it.
The food we ordered was fresh, flawlessly prepared, and refreshingly unpretentious. The server was attentive, energetic, and friendly but not overly so. We even had our coats hung up for us. The only fault I can point out was the oversized piece of chicken. A quarter chicken instead of a half would have been plenty, for me and probably for most people, and would have left room for dessert. (I want to go back for dessert!)
Absolutely first class, in every way.
Excellent food, wine and atmosphere. Had the special soup of the day and fish. The salmon was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The portions were the perfect size
Very unique atmosphere, excellent food and drink. Overall classy find!
Beautifully designed, romantic setting with great food. Definitely pricey, but for the most part, the quality of the food substantiated the cost. Certianly a gem in downtown Salem; absolutely recommend.
Very disappointing. The descriptions on the menu looked great, but the food was just average. Way overpriced for the quality. We were even required to buy bread. Our wine was good but a meager serving. For an $11 glass I was expecting more than two fingers worth. The ambiance was nice, but all-in-all, I would not recommend this restaurant.
Great experience with friends, smaller menu with huge taste. The bar and service was outstanding, the atmosphere impeccable!
