Hemsley created Palette to showcase his lifelong interest in art through a dining experience. Palette's creative cuisine centers Hemsley's "Cal Coastal" cooking style rooted in fresh, seasonal produce driven by talented and diverse seafood purveyors along the California Coast.
At this time we are offering outdoor dining on our terrace only. Indoor dining is expected to reopen when COVID restrictions are lifted.
Due to new Covid restrictions our last seating will be at 8pm and all guests must be done with their experience no later then 10pm. Thank you for understanding.

Food was fantastic! The plates and glasses were gorgeous, so was the decor! Service was a bit slow though, so don't plan on doing a quick in and out here. Worth the wait though!
Wouldn’t be able to tell from the outside and where it’s situated, but Palette was an amazing foodie experience. From the service to the dishes, our dining was perfect. They even offered a couple dishes to celebrate a birthday which were so delicious. Definitely recommend the polenta for starters and the black cod as an entree. But everything was so good. Thanks Palette
First time at Palette with reservation in the Gallery. Arrived and told male (suit) receptionist that we had reservation in the Gallery. I wanted to say it was our first time at Palette but there was no chance. We were wisked to the black interior of the Gallery. There was one other table of four people, the rest of the room was empty. The suit brought us to a table and immediately left. We waited about 10 minutes before a waiter appeared and took our drink and snack order. About 15 minutes later the drinks and food arrived....both were very good. So, we waited ~25 minutes from the time we arrived until being served.
No one ever returned to ask if everything was OK, in spite of the fact that our waiter and two suits walked past our table occasionally. I requested the check and we left....again, without any conversation.
I won't be back.
A warm personal greeting by owner Chef, gorgeous hand crafted wine glasses, fresh flavors, delightful textures and full seasonal sparkles from land and sea delivered in every bite. Always a beautiful experience to treasure.
Really incredible start to finish. I realize how incredibly difficult it is to run any kind of restaurant during these times but to run one with near perfect food and service was pretty amazing. Great job to the FOH & BOH-you guys killed it tonight! Cant wait to come back.
Get the escargoysters! These are the smoked oysters cooked in a butter strongly reminiscent of escargot garlic dip
Absolutely amazing meal from start to finish.
Perfectly attentive staff
Music was low, conversations at neighboring tables were hushed - very romantic (even though outside!). The outdoor seating is well heated and decorated with taste
Highly recommend their cocktail menu. Moped - refreshing, quintessential summer drink
Incredible attentive staff, outstanding food, and amazing drinks. A really memorable spot.
Delicious ! Lamb was amazing. Great service.
There is no real ambiance because you have to eat outside. The food was great looking forward to being able to enjoy it inside with a nice setting.
Great experience! The food is as tasty as it is beautifully presented ans served. Very fresh and interesting blend of flavors.
Lost one star on the desserts that were not at the levels of the meals (and we tried 3). Too bad in that one - I am a big dessert fan. They don’t need to be big, just beautiful with a touch of sweet.
The service was great! We were sitting outside and when the sun set the heaters where turned on and arranged to our benefit. All in all, a great experience.
Great food and service. Wine list is more than reasonable . Can't wait to repeat.
Please use a different reservation platform, the current one seems old-fashioned for such a modern restaurant
The longest service I experienced. More than an hour from the time of reservation to the food brought to the table.
I visited on their second Saturday of reopening for outdoor service (April ‘21). The restaurant and staff have adapted to the pandemic circumstance very well. The food and experience was exquisite, and equal or better than the times I had visited pre-pandemic. A better experience has not been had since well before the pandemic. I look forward to returning, as well as trying the Gallery.
Loved the wine selection and recommendation. The fried chicken starter and the black cod were outstanding.
Inspite of the inordinate situation brought by the pandemic Palette came like a true winner.
We booked Easter brunch as soon as we heard about their special four-course menu. It was creative (edible egg shells!) and well-executed. Delicious, too! We sat outdoors on their lovely terrace, barely noticing the traffic noise or light pedestrian foot traffic. The weather was a bit cool, so I wish they had set up heat lamps or offered us blankets (only found out about the latter after we were already back home). The meal was wonderful, but the first three courses arrived almost simultaneously. Dessert was perfection! We will return.
Food was good. Not GREAT. I was expecting more. Nothing was wrong with our food but there was nothing that stood out to me that made me want to go back.
Phenomenal cuisine, design and art make for an unforgettable experience at Palette on Folsom St.
Restaurant was not open
I'd been wanting to try Palette since it opened, and decided to experience their beautiful outdoor parklet before outdoor dining shut down again in December. The food was meticulous and thoughtful, and I had one of the best halibut dishes in recent memory, served with an inventive pepper stew. Definitely recommend.
Amazing food, great vibe.... excellent service..!!!!!
The staff is very professional and friendly
Great job with outside dining, very comfortable and accommodating. Meal delicious. Service was top shelf. Will be a definite place to return to.
Disappointing seasoning on the whole rock cod that cost $60!
OUTSTANDING FIND ON FOLSOM. Had dinner during COVID at Palette's outdoor tables (which thankfully come with plexiglass and very warm heaters). Service - outstanding on every level, and food quality and presentation also outstanding. Wine list could be a bit more expansive, including more reds by the glass, but truly, this is a first world problem, so no points off for that. The art gallery next door is a nice bonus. Can't wait to return!
Everything was absolutely excellent! Food, Service, Outdoor dining setup and facilities.
Great food. Great service. Great friends.
Loved everything about this place! The black cod was my favourite :) The ambience and service were amazing. The food is delicious and beautifully plated. Love all the artsy touches with plating and ceramics used. The gallery was fun to browse! Definitely recommend!
We were asked whether we wanted Still, Sparkling, or San Francisco's Finest for water. We chose Still, thinking that meant tap water but were then charged $6 for it. Thought that was sneaky and not very nice of them to take advantage of people who don't know their lingo. The food was just okay. The desserts were the highlight. Will not be returning.
Even with Covid- this place shines for its food and ambiance. We came here to celebrate our anniversary and were not disappointed. From the beginning ‘gift’ from the chef, to expertly shucked oysters, this high-end dining experience did not disappoint.
The agnolotti and black miso cod were stand out dishes. In a city where most of the best restaurants haven’t yet reopened, the outdoor dining experience here at Palette was over and above what we could have imagined. We will return again soon for another magical evening.
Very good food!
The staff at Palette paid attention to every little detail. The experience was fantastic and I think they handled COVID protocols well.
Palette was the most fun I’ve had dining out in I don’t know how long. The outdoor experience was superb, the menu is presented beautifully and the ingredients are approachable. One of my favorite restaurants in SF.
Lovely experience. Veggie tartar was still the highlight (second trip)...tried drinks this time. Also delicious.
Chef Hemsley and his team went above and beyond for us to have a great experience. The food was a culinary tour with flavors that reminded us Mexico, France, east Mediterranean.
With the current restrictions, the tables are on the sidewalk but somehow it makes you feel more like an extension of the restaurant.
The whole team talked to us and very proudly explained us how they came up with those flavors.
The wine selection is another opportunity to have different flavors and pairings.
Palette has returned to the San Francisco dining scene better than ever, and with Chef Peter J. Hemsley's extensive "Cal-Coastal" menu, there is something for everyone. It's quite apparent the Palette team has used the pandemic down time wisely by completely renovating its location at 816 Folsom, constructing a comfortable state of the art terrace, and crafting a deliciously creative menu curated from local food purveyors.
The staff operate above and beyond current SF Dept. of Health protocols so we felt safe dining on the Terrace. As an example, upon being seated, our server presented us with a "welcome box" that contained our silverware, indigo blue napkin, and a credit card sized hand sanitizer with the Palette logo. The staff are mindful of every detail. If you've been sitting on the "dining out" sidelines during the prolonged pandemic, we highly recommend treating yourself to a night out and give Palette a try.
Love this place! Went this week for my birthday and would definitely go again
They ran out of the dishes we really wanted to try. That’s understandable but the response what not so pleasing. At least offer a comp drink or dessert. Instead it was SOL and get something else.
My husband and I ate here recently to check out the new patio. The service was impeccable and we felt that all of the staff went above and beyond to make sure guests felt safe. We each received flatware, napkins, and personal sanitizers in individual boxes, and menus are accessed via QR codes. All of the food was beautiful and delicious, my favorites were the seafood linguini and ricotta cheese cake. The cocktails were also very inventive and super tasty! All around great covid dining experience, I’m so grateful that we were able to have such a nice meal out!
It was great! It might be a little confusing when you first walk up, look for the water station/ipad area, someone will help you. We made a reservation, and got seated right away. They also give you a cute hand sanitizer bottle about the size of a credit card to start the meal (super handy for fitting into your pockets). Favorite dish was probably the vegetarian tartare: it looks like meat, and taste likes beets. Miso cod was super soft and flakey. Every dish was beautifully presented!
