Paladar Latin Kitchen & Rum Bar Ratings and Reviews
This restaurant came highly recommended from friends. The guacamole was fantastic, the drinks were good (and the rum selection outstanding), but the meal itself was just ok. I really expected to have a lot of flavor, given that it was latin inspired, but it just left something out and was somewhat bland. The wait staff was great, the environment was nice so if you are going for happy hour drinks and appetizers, I would definitely go. Good casual meal, still go. Best meal of your life...eh.
The ambiance and food is outstanding but my server was only order taker. He had no personality, provided no insights to the menu and did not cross sell anything like appetizers or dessert. He did not smile and was not friendly. His lack of personality took away from our positive experience. The waitress we had during our first visit was bubbly friendly and knowledgeable about the menu, suggested a rum flight and dessert which we ordered and thoroughly enjoyed. Saturday he didn't mention anything and we didn't think about it. We will definitely go back because our food and drinks were great. I just think the waiter could have done much better.
My husband and I went for a Friday "date night". We sat at the bar. The bartenders were very friendly and helpful. The happy hour specials were great. We ended up staying in the bar for dinner and shared the Argentinian Mixed Grill. We added shrimp on the recommendation from the bartender and really enjoyed our food. We will definitely go back!
The only thing good about this place was the food, but not worth the headache. The hostess was extremely disorganized and forgot about us after we told her our reservation and she said she was getting it ready for us. Her and the manager continued seating people without reservations that came in after us. After finally being sat at a still-being-bused table, despite the numerous empty tables, we had to request dinning wear after appetizers (yucca fries) came out. The manager comped our appetizers because of the issues, but based on other reviews, this is not the first time they've had serious issues with the front of the house.
Again, the only good thing was the food, specifically, the meat. Everyone at our table enjoyed the steak and slow smoked pulled chicken was good. The sides were a bit lacking in flavor, but seemed fresh. Sweet potato donuts were also good, even for someone who doesn't generally like sweet potato.
I would not recommend this place for anything other than carry-out.
I had a very good experience ordering appetizers during happy-hour my first time there. This time around my wife and I ordered main courses-Adobo Shrimp & Grits and the Jamaican half Chicken. My wife said the chicken was okay but the shrimp and grits was very underwhelming. Could have used more seasoning for taste. Overall, the cost doesn't match the taste and portions of food.
We went out for a double date night and had a lovely Tapas style dining experience. My husband was excited that they had his favorite dish, Ropa Vieja on the appetizer list. All of the apps were very tasty- ropa vieja, traditional guacamole, chicken skewers, the tuna mini tacos and the queso with sausage dip. We had churros for dessert (tip:double up on marshmallow dip!). Drinks were good too, though the red Sangria was not the best we’ve had. Paladar is one of our favorite restaurants and tapas style might be our new way to enjoy it with friends!
Paladar has some great choices on their menu. My husband is Latin and we love the old comfort foods he grew up with...as well as the monitor. A couple things would make this restaurant atmosphere better- Latin music in background..it seemed to go back n forth, not sure what they were playing. Also, dimmer lights in eve. It was packed And bright. Think it would be super cool if, on Eve's on weekends, after dinner service over, they create a dance floor and play Spanish music...it would be great for those of us too annoyed and tired to go to a loud night club, a sweet, romantic alternative. Over all the Ropa Vieja and plantains made it worth the trip..great Cuban coffee too!
Disappointed that this restaurant has slowly declined over the past few years. There used to be a manager that walked the floor greeting customers and asking how the dinner was going. My experience was getting poor service from two inexperienced wait staff who were sharing our table - forgetting silverware, water refills, slow drink service, having to flag them down when needed anything - no attention to detail.
The menu choices have become much less - used to be a few pages, now down to one side food the other drinks - so you’d expect that what they do make would be excellent, but unfortunately it’s not the case. We had a party of four at our table and none of us were excited about our entrees - luke warm salmon, pink pork that was too sweet - even the person with leftovers decided not to take them home.
This used to be a unique restaurant but will be lucky to survive amongst all the competition unless they make some drastic changes in their customer service and food quality.
We had a mix-up due to the Open Table app. I thought I booked a reservation at the King of Prussia, PA location, which was 5 minutes away, but didn't realize that it brought up the Annapolis location for the reservation. . .about 2 hours away! When we got to the restaurant in King of Prussia, they knew nothing of the res and my phone died just at that time, so I couldn't pull up my confirmation email from Open Table. Fortunately they were very nice about it and charged my phone for me. When my friend showed the confirmation email, we saw what happened with the booking in the wrong place. The place was packed and no tables were available, but we lucked out and got 2 seats together at the bar, which is first come first serve and no reservation needed. The food was good as always. Excellent Guacamole to share, Duck Tacos and Shrimp and Grits. All were delicious! Just be careful when using Open Table's app to make sure the correct location comes up.
Perhaps we should not have tried out the restaurant on NYE? Our reservation for 7:30 was well handled and we were seated right away. We started with chicken empanadas which were quite good. The side salad was pleasant. My husband ordered Jerk Chicken, and I ordered the marinated Salmon dish, from the grill menu, which had a star indicating it was very popular. But then my husband's chicken was dry, and overcooked. My salmon was ordered "medium" but was quite overcooked, and therefore lacking in flavor. The accompanying crunchy carbohydrate was very good. The vegetable was yucca which looked like sweet potato, but not sweet.
Service was attentive for most of the evening, except for a break in service for about 10 minutes. We needed to get a take home box. I was watching out and then I noticed about 5 or 6 servers, including ours, emerging from the kitchen area at once. She apologized for the delay. I thought it was curious that they would have held a servers meeting on a busy night. The atmosphere in the restaurant is dark, with a high ceiling, nicely appointed, and the tables are not to crowded together. It was quiet enough to converse easily. A nice date restaurant, with a soothing atmosphere, but the chef needs to keep an eye on the meat thermometer.
This was our second visit to Paladar Annapolis and it was as expected.
Rochelle, our host, was on her first week there, and did a great job taking care of us.
If you are in the area and want great Latin American food at a place that is in the middle of a very nice shopping center (our experience with most Latin restaurants is that they usually are in a seedy part of town), then Paladar is your option.
Many gluten free options and amazing guacamole! The servers are always knowledgeable and usually have great recommendations. They will do their absolute best to accommodate any dietary needs. Service can be slower at times but I think that's due to the servers having large sections, which isn't their fault.
The front desk was a bit confused when we arrived. They started to show us to our table, then said that we had to wait while they tried to figure out another reservation which had not even arrived. The menu has good choices. We opted to have a salad as an appetizer but our salads and my meal arrived at the same time. My husband's meal "had been held" until after his salad was finished. The tables are close together and the place had several large groups that night so therefore the noise level was quite high. We highly recommend the mini donuts on the dessert menu. We would return but probably not on a Saturday night.
