Ozumo is one of San Francisco’s most popular destinations for contemporary Japanese cuisine. Created in 2001, Ozumo was one of the first restaurants to combine sushi and robata cooking under one roof. It was so slow despite opting to sit at the bar to get faster service as advised by the hostess, that they offered a sushi plate on the house because they couldn’t explain why the kitchen was so busy. Slow is an understatement, actually. The food is great though, but not worth the wait. I’ve eaten there before at odd hours. Maybe that’s when to go? Around 8:30p instead of the rush of 7:30? Last night was a Wednesday though, so we were just hoping for some good food on a not so busy night. I’ll try another restaurant at 7:30p in the future.

Food was terrific. Some maki we have not seen or tasted elsewhere. Very comfortable seating and attractive furnishing and design. Server was very knowledgeable but, when describing the menu, spoke at 100 mph and walked away quickly before we had time to digest his descriptions much less ask questions.

The only problem we encountered was a long (15 minutes after our reservation time) wait for the receptionist to show up. Finally, one of the waiters took care of us. Once seated, however, everything was splendid. The mizuma salad dressed perfectly with a lovely, light yuzu vinaigrette, the salmon belly nigiri and the tekka mango roll were perfectly fresh. Don’t miss desert! The light, rich chocolate cake served with a scoop of whisky banana ice cream was a perfect finish to our meal. We are returning in a few weeks.

We stay in the city for a weekend every year and this restaurant is near our hotel. On Friday we had drinks and food at happy hour and everything was fine. When we came for dinner on Saturday a bit different. We got seated after waiting a few minutes in an almost empty restaurant. Our server took our drink order and they came out 30 minutes later. Unacceptable. Great food and the service was fine after that but really, 40 minutes for a cocktail?
