Fantastic food. Although the portions are meant to be split some could have been bigger for the price. Try something different like the gin & tonic!
Amazing food, great time. 100% return. Restaurant was ver busy but the staff stayed on top of everything and was very attentive. Highly recommend the grasshopper tacos! Simply life changing.
We heard such good things that we decided to wait for a 9pm reservation when we were originally looking to eat around 7pm. It was WORTH the wait.
The food was incredible and so were the drinks. Everything was reasonably priced so we could order a couple things to try.
I recommend the ahi tuna ceviche and the quesadilla huitlacoche!
We also had a special request for split checks and our server was very accommodating to our needs.
Fantastic evening. Staff was both friendly and efficient. Would come back again when I’m in DC.
Very loud and energetic, I went as for a family meal- a bit too high energy for our desire. If I had a group of friends and a few cocktails would be a great atmosphere.
The food and drinks were superb, as was the service. We really appreciated Oyamel’s acknowledgement of our friend’s birthday. Overall, we had a wonderful dining experience.
The service and food were so amazing! Very fun meal.
The food was amazing, small plates but worth every bite. The drinks were delicious we enjoyed the skinny margaritas very refreshing.
Always one of the best places to go to. Food is top quality, not expensive, and the service is terrific.
Server was great! She gave us recommendations and even when my friend and I did not like what we got she let us switch with no charge. The food was great and tasted fresh. Definitely would go back again!
I love the oyamel margarita and I tried the scallop ceviche. It was so delicious I will definitely order it the next time that I’m there !
It’s a wonderful place. I think ver priced for amount of food but nice.
The food was amazing. I will definitely be returning soon.
Great tapas and our Swiss friends loved the cuisine
Food was ok for being one of the few Mexican themed restaurants in DC also were the cocktails, the mojito was unconventional (not a traditional one) it would’ve been best if explained beforehand. It was very attentive of the team to accommodate our reservation with a last minute guest.
We booked this restaurant twice on a weekend. It was that good. I would highly recommend the ceviches and the tres leches. The plates are small so we ordered about 2.5 on average in our group. The service was excellent and the noise level much better than most in the area.
noise level very high -not a place for extensive conversation
The chips and dip were excellent. Otherwise, the food was bad. Does not the chef taste it? For example, the revolting fries with mole sauce or the soggy Brussels sprouts. The noise level, beyond tolerating.
Fun restaurant and excellent food with different and interesting flavors. Service felt a bit rushed and disorganized but every table was full - so perhaps rushed and harried is better than overwhelmed.
This place has obviously dropped off. As Jose Andres' most affordable restaurant it draws a bigger crow than any of his others. Management clearly cares more about turning over a table than a good dining experience. We had to wait for a table despite having reservations. Service was very slow. Entrees were delivered while I was in the restroom, and mine was luke warm. On top of all that, the food was not as good as it always has been in the past.
Fun lively atmosphere and delicious food, friendly staff. Very happy with our meal!
Outstanding dining at a reasonable price. The establishment is well run and the staff is courteous and attentive. The quality of the food more than compensates for the noise level which can, at times, cause one to carry on a conversation in a raised voice.
After blowing our reservation at Jaleo, my special lady friend and I noticed Oyamel on our way to the National Portrait Gallery to see the Obamas. While waiting in line to see Mrs. Obama's portrait, we secured a reservation for Oyamel. She has celiac, so we were thrilled with the many Gluten Free options on the menu.
If you go, make a reservation, because on a Saturday evening this place was hopping.
The lady started with a ceviche verde and I the queso fundido con tequila. This was my first experience with ceviche and I enjoyed the one bite I was offered. My selection of the queso fundido con tequila was the right choice. I was presented with a cast-iron skillet of melted cheese, flambeed with tequila and topped with chorizo...and was given 5 house-stone-ground corn tortillas on which to consume this. Perhaps you didn't catch that: HOUSE-STONE-GROUND TORTILLAS! As someone who eats 90% vegan, this was indeed a delight! (my veganism is more for health than personal politics, and I was not 'practicing' tonight).
Our main dishes were tacos. The special lady friend ordered a cabrito pastor norteno (goat with a house made crema) and hongos en molito (mushrooms and poblanos). I went with the pancita de puerco al pastor(pork belly) and lengua guisada (beef tongue). We both traded bites of everything. It was unreal. Perfectly flavored and presented.
Oh - and definitely order the guacamole which is prepared at a station in the center of the restaurant, visible to the diners. It is ABSOLUTELY worth the $15 price tag. It also compliments the salsa which we believe was made with fire-roasted tomatoes and house-made tortilla chips.
Stellar experience which I hope we will do again. Though, be sure to ask about the bourbon if you order it. I LOVE Blanton's, but the $17 price tag on a finger-pour added some sticker shock to our tab. It was the most expensive line-item on our receipt. Totally worth it.
In the spirit of the WeRateDogs Instagram account, we give Oyamel a 15/10!
Great margaritas by the pitcher. Small plates are nice combination of traditional and innovative. Friendly service from hostess and bar and wait staff.
Great food and great atmosphere. Very hip and modern Mexican cuisine. Tacos and fresh guacamole were delicious. Highly recommend for any occasion.
Great as always. I can’t remember how many times I have been here. Everything every time is excellent.
I had looked at the lunch menu on line but it was Saturday. So brunch menu...and neither of the two dishes I had my heart set on were available. $8 for seasonal fruit, which was unripe pears, tasteless apples, a couple of slices of banana, and minute bites of pineapple. Also the albondigas were room temperature. The first batch of chips was excellent, not so the second one.
Wonderful menu for my gluten free granddaughter.
Fun for kids
We visit Oyamel occasionally because we enjoy more authentic Mexican food (my husband is Mexican). The food is very good, but improvements needed include: (1) addressing the high noise levels that often make it hard to talk and (2) making prices more affordable (Jose Andres restaurants are generally overpriced OR portions undersized). Service is generally quite good. I will note that during our recent visit, despite making reservations ahead of time, there is the tendency for the host to take you to the least appealing table absent your rejecting the table and asking for another readily available one. Lesson: Don't take what they give you if you see other tables that are better.
The restaurant is vibrant, the service excellent, and the concept great. However, having lived in Mexico for fifteen years, I was hoping that the food would better reflect real Mexican dining.
Oyamel never disappoints; perfect margaritas with fresh lime juice, excellent ceviche with sushi-grade fish, rare-to-find raw heart of palm salad from an organic farm in Hawaii, and yummy 'postres.' And that's just the food + drinks. The service is always attentive and energetic, and the atmosphere lively and fun. Good times, all around.
Oyamel is always a solid choice. Happy Hour is an excellent deal but non-happy hour is great too. Drinks are well-executed, food is on point (best guac in DC and this is coming from a San Diegan). Lively, vibrant vibe. Excellent service usually regardless of reservation or a bar/table-top grabber. I especially love this place for a catch-up dinner with friends, after-work happy hours, first dates, etc.. 4.5/5 stars consistently.
Except this past time, grabbed a couple coworkers who always hit up Alero for happy hour to show them the magic that is Oyamel. The food and drinks were fabulous as usual. But our waiter kept reminding us that happy hour ended at 6 from the moment we sat down for our reservation at 5. Understandable at first but he literally reminded us of this fact no less than 7 times - literally every time we ordered more food or drink or when just walking by. Equally confusing since we ordered both happy hour and non-happy hour items and made it clear we understood and didn't really care ($2 or $5 the tacos are great at any price and we were drinking both on and off HH menu). I don't know if he had a previous bad experience or maybe he was very rushed but it really lent a weird and bad vibe to the experience. I reassured my colleagues that it's the only bad service experience I've ever had at Oyamel and that we should try again. Shame but hopefully, it's just a one-off.
This was the best Mexican food ever. The fresh guacamole was awesome! Everything was delicious!
Great service and great food. Have been here multiple times and plan on going again before I move out of DC
If you are hungry don’t come here bc you will leave hungry and having spent at least $25.00 for a appetizers worth of food.
My new favorite restaurant in DC. Fun, bright decor and laid-back vibe. We had the gazpacho (actually a salad composed of jicama, pear, pineapple, and sriracha), ceviche (incredibly good), albóndigas, shrimp, and pork tacos (my daughter’s favorite), a refreshing pomegranate margarita, then finished with a billowy, velvety tres leches. Our server, Olaff, timed the meal perfectly and told us a little about the restaurant and its sister restaurants. Can’t wait to come back!
Great tequila and margaritas. Complementary chips and roasted salsa. Mole chicken tamale was tasty. Tacos are small but fresh corn tortillas with fresh ingredients worth it.
Delicious guacamole, ceviche, brussel sprouts. Love the host.
The only thing that keeps this from being a 5-star is that we had a reservation and still had to wait 15 minutes. But superior tacos!
Awesome meal! Food was creative and delicious! Cant wait to go back and have another meal there
